Joe Dumars, who has worked with the Kings in various capacities since June of 2019, is leaving the Kings organization to join the NBA league office as Executive Vice President Head of Basketball Operations, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Sacramento Kings chief strategy officer Joe Dumars is departing from the organization and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer is joining the NBA as its Executive Vice President Head of Basketball Operations, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

Dumars’ new position is definitely more prestigious, so there’s nothing about this move that should be immediately viewed as a red flag for Kings fans. Although it isn’t ideal to be losing your chief strategy director in the middle of your coaching search.
That being said, it’s hard to know how big an impact, if any, this will actually have with the Kings. The specifics of Dumars’ role and responsibilities have always been nebulous. Perhaps he was part of the problem in Sacramento, or perhaps he was the voice of reason keeping things from being worse.
The departure brings to an end a very odd tenure with the Kings. Dumars first came on the scene as a consultant, who reportedly caught Vivek Ranadivé’s ear. Vivek then wanted to insert Dumars above then-GM Vlade Divac. Divac rejected the move and resigned, leading to the GM search that brought Monte McNair to the Kings. After Vlade’s departure Dumars went from Special Advisor to Chief Strategy Officer.
There’s no word yet if the Kings will attempt to replace Dumars.
Update:
The great Sam Amick of The Athletic published a new article around the Kings current coaching search (quite a bit of good information in there, be sure to check out the whole article), and in it he included some interesting news about Dumars’ departure.
Before we take a deeper look at what we’ve learned so far in the search, let’s go back to the Dumars component for a moment. To state the obvious here, it’s quite unorthodox to have a high-ranking team official head for the exits just days after his voice was taken into consideration during a coaching search. But Dumars’ contract was expiring, and I’m told he wanted more direct control over the front office if he was going to return. In Dumars’ desired structure, McNair would have reported to him rather than Ranadivé.
Ranadivé didn’t share an interest in that sort of setup, and now Dumars has opted for this prominent role with the league.
Amick also notes that Dumars’ role is not expected to be filled.
This gives us answers to a lot of the questions that were unanswered earlier today. How involved was Dumars? Very. Was he still angling for power? Yes. Was he involved in the coaching search? Yes. Was his role as nebulous and confusing to other GMs as it was to fans? Yes.
With this added clarification I feel even more comfortable with Dumars’ departure. One less cook in the kitchen, one less Wormtongue in Vivek’s ear, one less unorthodox part of the Kings organizational structure.
I would hope this means this is one less voice making decisions and it’s fully Monte’s lead now, but the fact that we don’t know if it does or not is a fail in itself.
It’s the hope that kills you, I’ve been told.
What about the story of giving Gentry a FO advisor job?
A movement has started. Get on it Kings fans!
What can Brown do for you?
Clearly he delivers!
#CrownBrown
Brown 25.
Sacramento-Fried Movie: Finger-lickin’ bad.
damn it, you beat me to my favorite gif.
All I’m hearing is that another Vivek guy muddying up the command structure is now out of the way. McNair has got to be allowed to sink or swim on his own, and hopefully, this gets him a bit closer to that.
This is where I’m at.
Agreed. Let’s just hope Dumars isn’t replaced by yet another ex-player/shadow GM.
BREAKING: Former Warriors G and Vivek Ranadive idol Monta Ellis joining Kings front office as “strategic advisor,” will report to Monte McNair but also directly report to Vivek and also oversee the revamped Crowdsourced Draft Analytics department.
Good. I had no idea what he did anyways.
Lol
I guess the question of what Joe Dumars does for the Kings exactly is no longer something that really needs to be asked.
First, the worst coach gets let go.
Then, an ambiguously titled exec who no one is sure what he did leaves.
This obviously means McNair is cleaning house!…….right?
Mrs. Doubtfired!
Without a doubt, Misses Fired!
I think trying to clean the “Kings house” is always something challenging…
Mark Jackson’d.
Joe’s role with the Kings was that of a figurehead (recognizable name, but no decision making power). This explains why no one can recall anything positive that he’s done for the organization. What Joe’s legacy will be is that he drafted Darko second overall in the 2003 draft, while passing on Melo, D.Wade or Bosh. Joe will not be missed.
Joe’s/Shaq’s/Mullin’s/Vlade’s/Peja’s role with the Kings was that of a figurehead (recognizable name, but no decision making power). This explains why no one can recall anything positive that he’s done for the organization.
I thought it was to be the designated celeb to sit next to the dismissive little chap at center court.
He did build a championship roster in Detroit. He may have outstayed his welcome and lost his edge in the end, but for a while there, Dumars was recognized as one of the best GMs in the league. Darko is an unfortunate footnote in his legacy.
All told, the pass on Doncic may end up being worse than Detroit passing on Carmelo. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t think the kid has what it takes to have an even better career than Anthony. If he stays healthy, it’s a lock, especially since freakish athleticism & speed aren’t what make him so special. Doncic’s game should age rather nicely.
He came, he apparently did things (maybe?), he departed in the dark of night. The mystery of Joe Dumars on the Kings will live on.
I remember news that Dumars was part of the organizaiton literally came out of nowhere too…no official announcement, and most found out long after he had already been hired.
Chief Strategy Officer. Sounds like a job they give in a Japanese company where you are put in an office on a high floor with a window that opens.
I think the real question is what “strategies” on both basketball and business sides of things had he implemented since taking this job?! Oh, the kangzing strategy…I see…
This is one of my favorite comments, ever.
…and there was much rejoicing (yay!)
Over/under on number of front office moves we use to signify the disfunction is finally over?
The Forever Chaos Agent is the most apt name I’ve ever seen for Vivek Ranadive. He’s not the cause of every problem, but man does he create some real problematic issues you cannot overcome. Or at least not easily.
Vivek is like Batman in the sense that he tries to solve problems with the resources that he has, but if he just applied his resources directly to the problem instead of inserting himself first, it would probably eliminate the problems in the first place.
After all, maybe Gotham wouldn’t have a crime problem if instead of spending his billions on tech to catch criminals, Bruce Wayne just gave the damn money to schools and neighborhood organizations to prevent the poverty that leads to crime in the first place.
I’m ranting now, it’s Monday.
Bruce Wayne should have just bought Twitter, no?
One less employee to pay for….meh!
I find it interesting that after collecting a pay check from the Kings for the last threes in some shadowy role that no one can define or be sure that he even had an impact, Dumars gets a promotion to a prestigious league position. He was also an “advisor” for the Pistons after stepping down as GM in 2014.
8 years of “advising” to Executive Vice President of Head of Basketball Operations.
Dude must know where some bodies are buried.
Reparations for having to share a locker room with Isiah Thomas all those years.
Someone find me a puppy to kick.
Pictured below: Vivek Ranadive (l) and Monte McNair (r).
Why the eff are we hearing about what Vivek thinks?
This franchise just sucks.
Exactly right.
Clown Show.
Oh my god Vivek, you are a moron. Idiocy brought about by the fog of your ego.
You like Bagley over Luca, you thought 4-v-5 was a viable idea, hired Puke, fired Malone, on and on. One question….
What the fuck is wrong with you?? Go get some help and while your at it…..
F off.
This is NBA 3.0!
We. Are. F*cked.
Until/Unless Vivek backs off or leaves it’s over.
I see this as the ultimate stand off tween Monte and Shitvek. Seems McN talked V outta Doug, now he’s gotta do the same w Jackson.
But Jackson shouldn’t even be apart of this search. It’s disgusting. I truly dislike/hate this owner.
We are at the precipice.
If this has any truth to it, Monte McNair is not in charge. Stop feeding us dog doody and telling us it’s chocolate.
Can I ask the question: How can you be impressed with someone’s interview but not be part of the process?
Good question.
Maybe he watched a recorded interview on Zoom?
This.
Let’s not pretend like Vivek isn’t made aware of and involved in every step of a decision like hiring a coach.
It’s all smoke and mirrors with these guys.
** slowly walks off ledge **
You get the idea that Vivek is making the hire . Nothing has changed except Monte is the latest fall guy !
ugh
Also covered: Mark Jackson has impressed Kings owner Vivek Ranadive in the interview process to date and appears to have his best shot at an NBA coaching job since his Golden State ouster eight years ago –> https://marcstein.substack.com/p/a-slow-spinning-coaching-marketplace?s=w
Golbert or Mitchell traded soon.
Thank you Lord ????
Another big nothing burger.
Nobody cares about Dumars.
There was a recent debate about where Sabonis ranks in the NBA pecking order. I have him around 40 while another mentioned he was comfortably within the top 35 so I’d assume around 30. Sportsnaut recently published the top 50 now and had him at 37 and Fox at 43. Where do you rank Sabonis?

This is a comment in response to the news that supposedly Vivek is impressed with Jackson’s interview.
first of all I’m not sure I believe this to be true. I think this and hope this is another case of click bate reporting. Who dropped that info to the press? And why?
now… to my next thought on this mark jackson shit show possibility. IF Mark Jackson is hired as the next coach I’m am completely convinced that it’s an intentional hire to give reason (lack of ticket sales, attendance and tv deals) to move the team and increase the value of his investment. Period.
I will wait to see who actually has control of general manager duties when the new coach is announced. If it’s mark jackson my nightmare theory above I think holds true. If it’s not, Monte is actually in control and there’s reason for optimism moving forward. Might even be able to start seeing the hate on Vivek reduce significantly.
Seen this a few times in threads now…that the Kings incompetence is somehow 3D chess to reduce fans/money and move the team.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought there was a 35 year non relocation agreement as part of securing the arena money from the city. Is that not the case?
That would definitely be playing the long game to keep the team that shitty for 30 more years and secure the move…but at the current rate : )
Sometimes incompetence is just that…there doesn’t have to be some other grand ulterior motive.
I figure there are outs for the no-relo, like handing over the city a ton of cash. However, I don’t think that’s what Vivek is trying to do. I think he’s just shitty at running this organization.
The simplest answer is very often the correct one.
Occam’s Razor and also Hanlon’s Razor “never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”
That’s a great question. Is there a 35 year minimum agreement/contract to keep the team in Sac? That would be cool. Or would it? I fought for the Kings to stay not for than Kangs to take over.
He was quite the strategist. NBA 3.0!
If he had anything to do with the Davion Mitchell pick, that was not bad.
Power play: Joe Dumars exits after failed attempt to seize control of Kings’ front office
https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/article261000152.html#storylink=topdigest_latest
Looks like this is the second time Dumars tried to pull the same stunt.
Mullin to Vlade to Dumars to McNair to ….
???????? Always behind the curtain
High profile guy. Didn’t know what his role was. Didn’t know if he was good at what he was doing. Don’t know what his philosophy was. Organization not planning to fill his position. Sounds like addition by subtraction. I really hope when this is all settled, Monte clearly has the power to run the entire basketball ops side of things. I trust him more than anyone else and we’ll have a clear person to blame or applaud.
