Michael Scotto of HoopsHype shared a fresh batch of trade rumors as we officially enter Trade Deadline week. The update included the Kings still being interested in a couple of familiar names, Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O’Neale, who have been rumored Kings targets for months. But the update also included a note that the Kings are interested in Delon Wright, a name we haven’t seen reported yet.
From Scotto:
Delon Wright has drawn trade interest from the Celtics, Kings, and Timberwolves, league sources told HoopsHype. The Nuggets were also mentioned recently by Marc Stein. Wright is expected to command second-round draft pick compensation in trade talks, league sources told HoopsHype.
Wright was acquired by the Kings at the trade deadline in the 2020-21 season, playing 27 games for the Kings before being traded in the following offseason. Wright was traded for Tristan Thompson, a move that was baffling at the time and has continued to look bad as time went on. I consider it one of Monte McNair’s worst trades, but if that’s your worst trade you’re doing pretty good by Kings GM standards.
Wright would make a lot of sense as a backup guard for the Kings current roster. At 6’5 Wright would give the Kings more size at the guard position, and is a solid-but-not-great shooter. Wright is playing limited minutes for the Wizards this year, but his per-minute numbers are still solid. If the cost is a second rounder and salary matching, I’d be very happy bringing back Wright for a second tour in Sacramento.
The trade deadline is Thursday, February 8th at 12 PM PT.
I love Delon Wright…very solid back-up point guard, he steal a bit, play a bit defense…can shoot a bit….
Also, he witnessed Barnes hit that turn-around 3 pts jumper against the Cavs in the bubbles….
Just bring him back, Monte !!!
Delon seems a solid back-up at both guard spots . Good defender and better than Current roster players . Not likely to move the needle .
What do mean by not likely to move the needle? I think the Kings with better bench play would have a couple extra wins this season pretty easily. But I would agree if you’re just saying Wright won’t make the Kings immediate title contenders.
I’m following the Wizards a lot, and Wright has been very underwhelming this season (and injured).
Now it could be that it is just being stuck on a tanking team, but he really seems to have lost a step ot two.
So, I am not entirely sure he’ll even move the needle as much as in “a couple of extra wins” move.
That’s fair, I could be wrong. I just think of how many games we’ve lost because the bench comes in, can’t stop anything, and can’t stop turning the ball over. Wright’s size and defense aren’t world-changing, but he’s a competent vet. And same on offense, he’s stable and competent. It’s a low bar, but I still think that’s better than our bench has been most of the season.
If he is just a nominal improvement over Duarte, then I’m not sure it’s worth giving up a 2nd round pick. After all, Wright’s numbers this year are nowhere near where they were when he last played for Sac.
Because he’s played 10 minutes less per game than he was in Sacramento. Now, even looking at per minute stats he’s scoring less per 36 than he was in Sac, but assists are up and he’s still rebounding at a really good rate for a guard. And shooting 37% from 3 still. He’s lost a step from 3 years ago, which is expected for a role player in their 30s, but I believe he still could help.
This is a solid point. Is he better than Duarte? Is he better than Keon Ellis?
Now that we are talking about it… Why isn’t Ellis getting more Playing time? I wish I could say Mitchell is a better option but I Sadly can not. Mitchell has been underwhelming without a doubt. He was a much more impactful player last year. Much much more. I’m a little confused as to why Ellis has completely vanished from the rotation after having several weeks of productive performances.
Is Delon Wright better than Colby Jones? enough that its worth burning a second round pick on? Call me skeptical.
IMO Ellis would be better than Wright.
What about Tyrus Jones. Add Avdiga to the mix and you now have a defensive wing(6’9″) young energetic good motor doesn’t have to score much but defend and rebound? Jones would be the perfect fit as backup to Fox giving him more time to rest and do what he does in the 4th. quarter. My next choice would de Caruso.
Kings have melted late in games with big leads. The lack of bench has contributed.1-2 stops vs. Suns and Bucks would have = 2 wins and there are other games. But a player that can increase the season wins might not influence a play off advance.
I would really look at Jones. Been around can shoot but more importantlly handles the ball extremely well. Assists to turnover rate jextremely high and IMO would really help especially in the area when we can’t handle comebacks by the other team. Would also give Fox more time on the bench which he really needs.
Realistically, we are just talking about taking Davion/Keon’s minutes.
So, we are talking about a minor upgrade (potentially) of 12 minutes per game.
Better is better, so do it, but I think it’s fair for fans to not think this results in major changes to the Kings’ season’s prognostication.
I think Monte could do better. Hit the tires on Tyrus Jones.
“move the needle” could mean win a few more this year or advance to second round. Can DW help the Kings advance? Of the potential trade “gets” who could? DFS most likely candidate for that “job”.
Caruso, Thybulle, T. Jones?
Grant or Kuzma- maybe but Grant’s contract is bad and Kings would have to hope that get good Kuzma and not bad Kuzma. The good one is long, athletic, runs, rebounds and scores in bunches. The bad one shoots to much and turns it over and plays no D.
Combine Tyrus Jones with Deni Avdiga.
I’ve brought this up before like 2 weeks ago but what do you guys thinking of picking up someone like T.J. Warren, he was breaking out as a star in the bubble for Indiana with some crazy like numbers and also plays defense.
I personally think a couple of guys like Delon Wright & T.J Warren would be a fun and cheap experiment as opposed to going all in for someone like Kuzma. I sorta have doubts that someone like Kuzma would be ready to buy in and play third or fourth fiddle for the Kings if we’re still pursuing him.
Not sure about Warren anymore. He didn’t look good in Phoenix last year from my recollection.
Idk he’s had some some good scoring games for his 2022-2023 season.
If you look on his profile ESPN stats under game logs when he’s given at least 20 mins a game he can score 15 a night, and if you look at his Nets stats he had a string of games of 18, 19, 20, 15. I think if he could even gives 10 a night with his defense and veteran presence to help keep the bench from sinking when they come in that it would greatly benefit the Kings.
He’d probably only cost us just a non guaranteed minimum vet salary.
Maybe I’ve overly optimistic about what he can do at this stage of his career because I really say a spark in him being that guy when he was peaking, and would love to see what he can do if given a chance again.
The bummer is that the Kings needed OG or a similar player in order to make that leap. They’d be contenders right now with OG- but don’t have the assets.
Im not sure how they are going to get the piece/pieces they need this year or, more likely next, to move forward.
this is true but the price for OG! top sixth man, starting SF who averages 20 and a high pick ( 31). Kings could have matched that but goodbye Monk and Keegan.
As I said a month ago go after Tari Eason if you want a player that really plays defense is young doesn’t have to score a lot but can stretch the floor shoot around 40% from 3 has a motor that won’t quite. He has room for more potential.
Think this could be the Wright move!
Yeah, but Delon-ger we wait, the less Wright it will be.
Monte like to play Delon-game and wait for the Wright move.
Ooh, even better.
No way when you could potentially could get Jones for not much more.
I’d be happy if Monte were able to get him. Would definitely help with our bench guard position.
does it though? This just seems like a waste of energy and assets for at best a minimal upgrade over duarte, Mitchell, Ellis and Jones.
Especially Ellis.
McGee and a 2nd rounder works in the trade machine. That being said, he’s likely just a 3 month rental as he’s expiring. Is that worth it for a guy who’s likely gonna give you around 12-15 minutes per game?
so does Duarte and Davion for Delon, and I like that better. (what’s funny is that the NBA trade machine says that the trade will make Washington -15 wins. I’ve never seen anything close to that level of prediction for any trade before. And it does not effect the Sacramento win total at all. Weird.)
I wouldn’t think they’d want Davion’s guaranteed deal for next season.
for sure they would. This trade makes sense if Monte has decided that Mitchell and Duarte have no real future in the NBA. You get rid of two guys you no longer want to be committed to, while replacing them with a guy who plays the same position, is long, is a veteran and isnt a long term commitment. This sets the table for more money to keep Monk in the off season and says to Colby Jones and Keon Ellis… “One of you could earn the back up guard position for the 2024/25 season. Time to seize the opportunity that you have earned.”
I think the Kings have a limit on how much they can offer Monk, regardless of any amount of cap space they create. The number is something like 2yr/$39? Is that accurate any of you cap gurus out there?
The trade machine is off…I did Fox for Poole (as a test only!!!) and the Wizards were -13 wins! Kings were -9. Code must be entered wrong
Trade Machine is just another Sac King hater! It probably tallied the All-Star reserve vote.
i don’t think so. I’d rather just roll with what we got than make this type of trade. Mcgee is more valuable than Delon Wright would be. At least I think so.
He might be a throw in for a bigger deal. I hope this isn’t the trade…but on the trade machine this one works.
Kuzma and Wright for Barnes and Huerter.
I would not be a fan because I don’t think it moves the needle…but it would be interesting. I would much rather have Grant and Thybulle.
I sure hope that deals is not made.
agreed…I probably would rather have DeRozan and Caruso for Barnes and Huerter over this deal. At this point-it’s all just guessing.
derozan and caruso move the needle significantly more.
This makes too much sense not to happen. Has he lost a step? Maybe. Still a pretty big upgrade over what Mitchell(or Duarte) has been giving us.
Not the trade target I was hoping for lol…this would not be an upgrade whatsoever. It would be to save cap space next year, since Wright’s deal is up after this year. Why not trade for Tyus Jones instead? An actual upgrade….not a lateral or potentially downgrade move.
I agree.
None of those players move the needle. Need more top end talent.
I’ll pass. Wasn’t that impactful when he was here. I’d rather keep a 2nd round pick. Prefer we go for Thybulle and/or Jerami Grant.
