The Sacramento Kings announced Saturday that they have converted Isaac Jones to a two year NBA contract. Isaac Jones had been on a Two-Way contract, but had used his full 50 games of eligibility. This move allows Jones to continue playing with the Sacramento Kings for the remainder of the year, as well as into the play-in tournament and (lol) playoffs.

Jones’ story is one you can’t help but root for. Jones had no college prospects and was loading trucks before finding an opportunity at a Junior College. He turned that opportunity into playing Division 1 basketball, and after going undrafted he signed a Two-Way deal with the Kings. Now he’s on a full NBA contract. It’s a wonderful testament to making the most of the smallest of opportunities. Jones doesn’t project to be more than a backup NBA big man, but he’s the type of backup big I love to root for. He players hard, he has fantastic athleticism, and he’s ready whenever his number is called. I’m really excited for Jones.

I’ve been hammering the Kings for a while now over their delay in converting Jones. This move should have been done shortly after the trade deadline to bring the Kings roster up to the required 14 players. Instead the Kings have used a series of 10-day contracts to float at 13 players for as long as possible, all to save a few bucks at Jones’ expense. Surely the Kings will pass these savings onto the fans, right? Right? By waiting, the Kings also passed the deadline where they could have back-filled the Two-Way contract slot, so that space will be vacant until the offseason. More savings! Huzzah!

Congratulations to Isaac Jones. This contract is well-deserved and long overdue. Keep proving the doubters wrong and show us just how high your ceiling can be.

I hope he continues to play well and then makes it to a team that’ll actually value his contributions. Vivek’s penny pinching is utterly disgraceful.

My guess is that he replaces Lyles role/minutes this offseason.

Is that an upgrade, or just a cost savings move?

Cost savings, for sure.
