The Sacramento Kings are waiving guard Boogie Ellis, according to a report from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. This move comes as a surprise after Ellis posted a strong preseason, especially in contrast to the performances of several other end-of-the-roster players on the Kings. Ellis was signed to an Exhibit 10 contract after going undrafted this year, so it still remains possible that Ellis ends up back with the Kings on some other contract. I actually waited a few hours before writing this post just in the hopes that we might get some clarification on his future with either Sacramento or Stockton, but that clarification hasn’t come.
The Sacramento Kings are waiving guard Boogie Ellis, league sources told @hoopshype. Ellis averaged 9.0 points in 12.8 minutes during the preseason, while shooting 39% from 3-point range and playing capable defense. During eight Summer League games, he shot 47% from 3-point range pic.twitter.com/Skxdan1zCx

If the Kings are in fact done with Ellis, I’ll be disappointed. While the end of the bench spots probably won’t have a big impact either way on this season, I still care about the moves the Kings make or don’t make at the margins. Great team maximize every opportunity, and uncover gems in free agency and late in the draft. The Kings found Keon Ellis as an undrafted player, and now he’s the starting shooting guard. That’s a success story that underscores the importance of these margin moves. Keon Ellis also stands out because he’s the only notable success the Kings have found in the margins under Monte McNair. Our second round picks, when we keep them, have not made an impact. And that includes Colby Jones, who looks more lost than ever and who I would have been less surprised about being waived than Boogie Ellis.
I would have personally preferred to have seen Mason Jones waived, and Boogie Ellis signed to a Two-Way. Mason Jones simply hasn’t shown me enough to see value in keeping him in a developmental spot, especially at 26 years old. Mason seems like a fun guy to have around, I loved seeing his blonde hair bouncing excitedly on the bench at the end of last season. I feel bad calling him out as someone I want to see lose his job, but the Two-Way spots are an opportunity to have a combination of added depth and development opportunities for young guys. I’d have zero issues with Mason being on a regular Stockton Kings contract.
With the preseason over, we’ll likely see a number of end-of-the-roster changes and players being waived. We’ll see how it all plays out, and if Boogie Ellis has a role in Sacramento when the dust settles. If not, I imagine some other smart team will scoop him up to benefit from Sacramento’s decision.
Is it too late to waive the other five on the bottom of the bench and hold open tryouts in local parks?
I’m surprised as well. I figure he would have been the last of the exhibit 10 contracts that would have been cut. I mean, why do the Kings still have Brodrick Thomas, Skal and Terry Taylor on exhibit 10 deals. As I mentioned in the other thread, this may be at the request of Boogie’s camp. If has a better deal elsewhere then simply a possible Stockton Kings invite, I’d hope he’d take it and the Kings would allow him the opportunity.
“Kings cut Ellis!”
Looks like he forgot to shave the last bit of his face.
98% of what is “original” in these latest comments originated in his work. He even has someone write his headlines for him.
Yeah…no.
His explanation to the clickbait Orlando Johnson headline was that the readers are not owed info in the headline, and his double down was that the Bee (the fucking Sacramento Bee!) did not have a picture of Orlando Johnson.
Weak. Sauce.
He has been around longer than a week. Clickbait is the only opportunity the Bee has compared to the other sports media that is worth paying for. He has nothing to do with pictures or headlines. I doubt the Bee is willing to pay for a picture of Robinson to use. That is good business.
Cool that he actually spoke with you. Woj would not do that. I like that there is still some local coverage of this team. The guy is not perfect. Nobody posts our pictures all over when we use poor grammar or write something that turns out to be dumb.
Amick has a great piece out on the Kings recently. Have you checked it out?
Yes, clickbait free, too. Something a journalist would write. What Anderson / the Bee did was clickbait. And I guess that’s fine if you have determined to not be a trusted source of news.
And Anderson spoke not just to me, but to everyone via his X page. He defended his actions and the Bee’s actions, so he owns them.
The Bee is built with clickbait to sell Anderson’s work. That is what local newspapers have come to. Anderson is the journalist not the Bee. I appreciate his coverage and thoughts on the team.
So he did not actually speak to you? You could probably call him?
Glad he stood behind his work good or bad. The headline is not the news. The article is the news and Anderson did that the right way. Amick came from the Bee. Anderson is as human as you and I. He writes about a team we enjoy. The community should support that instead of making fun of the guy. No need to go around bashing people.
I read writers for news or entertainmentt. Anderson provides neither. He’s the new Jason Jones. And he opened himself up to criticism when he defended his & the Bee’s actions. Your mileage may vary. Moving on.
The list of people to not like is getting long. Criticism of his work, the article is all good. But the headline and photo has noting to do with him and everything to do with the Bee. Definitely has nothing to do with him as a person or his facial hair.
We can all disagree or agree without personal attacks. Good to move on from what the Bee put out for a headline a couple of weeks ago.
Terry Taylor and Broderic Thomas also waived
…..keep going….do not stop too soon.
Skal is still with the team and is at practice.
Giles has been released. This could be a restructuring to go back to 2017. Not good basketball. It will definitely facility the same old stories of the last ten years being used to define what the team is today.
He didn’t look good in preseason, did he? He has the size they need, just not quite the actualized skillset.
Same as his previous five years in the league. I love what Monte has done with this team as far as driving change. I am not sure how Skal became part of the new team here. He is a not an enigma or a high potential player. I do not think anyone can look at the needs of this team and say Skal is the fit.
Skal has now been cut.
Drew Timme and a couple other dudes signed to Stockton
I like Drew Timme.
I’m not holding my breath, but the “idea” of Timme as a Sabonis backup is at the very least…an idea. For all the accolades of college, I’m just not sure he has the quickness for the NBA. He was a man amongst boys in college, but the NBA is a very different level.
I think Timme is more of a 4 in the NBA but I guess you could say the same for Domas. Anyways, yeah, he has an interesting skill set but I am unconvinced on his athleticism for the NBA
Cligan is also very slow, but having great impact on court
yeah, good signing.
