The Sacramento Kings are re-signing Doug McDermott for one season, according to a new report.

The 11-year veteran averaged 3.5 points on .472% from the field and .436% from three last season for the Kings. He played in 42 games and started in 3 games. McDermott has never averaged more than 24 minutes per game and has started in 97 of his 697 total games played in the NBA. The Kings are the 8th team the 6’6’’ forward has played on.

His best season occurred in 2020-21 with the Indiana Pacers when he averaged 13.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

Is he dating Anjali or something? Because why else do you give a guy $3.5M to jack 30′ jumpers in the garbage seconds of a 4th quarter blowout?

$3.5M is the minimum salary for a 10+ year player.

As far as end-of-the-bench guys go, he’s fine. He can get hot enough offensively that he might even help claw back from the wrong end of a blowout once a season and win the 12th Man of the Year award.

Yeah I get it’s the vet minimum for a guy of his…age. I’d just much prefer to give the league minimum for $1.2M to one of those dudes from summer league to ride the end of the pine. This comes from a team that needed to shave a few million by dumping JV so they could sign Schröder and they now hand out vet minimum deals to dudes long in the the tooth? If they are trying to be the oldest team in the league they have a long ways to go to catch the Clips.

I agree. I would rather we go get Vanderbilt. Defense over offense is what we need right now. Still young enough to fit Perry’s scheme. One of the best defenders in the league. It would cost you less than half the MLE and the rest you can use what ever you want. Not a Westbrook or Simmons. We already have Markelle Fultz who IMO can handle the backup point guard position. And we get read of Saric. Vanderbilt could come in anytime you needed defense and do a really good job. His motor is high and he never quits. Would be an ideal fit along with Issac Jones. Jones does the heavy inside stuff and Van plays the perimeter although he is a good rebounder. No brainier.

Fulton was signed only through the end of the 24-25 season. He is currently an unrestricted free agent, so we don’t “already have” him.

When I read this I thought, okay, why tie up the 3 million now?
My next thought was he is going to be a $ balancer in a trade.
i will be surprised if he’s here at the start of the season.

I don’t believe any newly signed free agents can be traded until Dec. 15th.

It’s doesn’t matter who they will bring in for the 11-15 spots. They still have a rotten core that doesn’t fit well. Until that is changed, 40 wins is probably the ceiling.

Perry’s free agency activity is… puzzling. Signing Dennis (the MEHnace) Schröder and now McDerMEHt. Going after Kuminga and Simmons. And apparently setting up Keon’s departure next year as a UFA. Not really feeling any immaculate vibes here…

Interesting how the agents didn’t mention how much of the contract is guaranteed. Hopefully that information comes out soon

In other news:
Tautvydas Sabonis — brother of Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis — has been named as the new head coach for the @LondonLions* at just 33.

Sabonis will now team up with the Lions’ president from Boston (Lenz Balan) as the team returns to EuroCup play this season.

I thought this was relevant to re-post in this thread. If in fact McDermott has a fully guaranteed one year deal, he basically has a no trade clause. I can’t imagine Perry would be this dumb and am hoping Doug’s deal is fully unguaranteed as a result. Hat tip to NorCalKingsFan for verifying this.

Adamsite

Ok, please correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the CBA dictate that if a free agent re-signs with the same team for one year, they have a right block any trade?

NorCalKingsFan

You’re correct. It’s not exactly a no-trade clause, although its effectively the same, they’re considered ineligible to traded by their team during the year they signed for unless they agree to be traded, if they do, they are eligible to be traded.

It’s to prevent teams from signing free-agents simply to snatch up assets off the market to then immediately move them for compensation.

We need another courtside vomit excorcism.

I’ll hapilly volunteer if y’all help set up a GoFundRik so I can pay the flight, courtside tickets and Zing vodka to induce the acid reflux required.

In Perry’s defense, Max and Nique appear like they will end up being really good picks.

All Perry had to do in terms of signings was sign a cheap stop gap PG instead of Dennis and the offseason would have been fine (stealth tank). The tank is unintentionally still in tact, just more expensive.
My hope is VivPerry realize the during the season that the west is too loaded and the playoffs are not attainable and they trade every tradeable core player in season and aide the tank.

I’ll reserve my evaluation of the draft until I see these guys play against NBA talent. I don’t necessarily think Perry should get bonus points for drafting old rookies with a better chance to contribute day 1, but less upside.

I’m with you. To point to summer league as evidence that the Kings had a good draft is far too premature. By all accounts both Keegan Murray and Davion Mitchell had better summer leagues (both got MVP) than Nique and Maxi and they sure as hell haven’t altered the course of the Kings.

Whenever you focus on your problems and limitations, rather than your opportunities and possibilities in any given situation, that is exactly what will be realized in your life. Remain focused on seeing the promise made manifest in your life, and you will find that the light will shine through in every circumstance

I can’t help it, I’m starting to dislike him already.

Getting off to a bad start would be a blessing in disguise. Show that the team isn’t competitive and force moves to be made. I hate rooting for the team to lose, It just might be the only way for The Dismissive Little Chap to see that major changes at the top of the roster need to happen.

That will likely result in Christie getting fired and the beginning of the Woodson era. The little Chap’s dismissiveness limit is extremely large
