DeMarcus Cousins’ tenure with the Kings was tumultuous, to put it lightly. Boogie was beyond talented, but was also temperamentaland often served as his own worst enemy. No game better encapsulates both the highs and lows of the Boogie Cousins experience than his performance on December 16, 2016 against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Boogie played 41 minutes and absolutely dominated the Blazers. Cousins finished with 55 points, the second-highest scoring game of his career. He scored those 55 points going 17-28 from the field, and 16-17 from the free throw line. The Blazers had no answer for him, and Boogie led the Kings to a come-from-behind victory over Portland. This game also led to Meyers Leonard whining in the locker room postgame about having no respect for Cousins.
But the scoring outburst and the comeback victory aren’t why this game is memorable. This is the game where, while celebrating a big play in the fourth quarter, DeMarcus Cousins’ mouthpiece flew out of his mouth in the direction of the Blazers bench and Cousins was ejected. He stormed off the court, frustrated, but not delaying at all. The refs then reviewed the incident, rescinded the second technical, and Boogie returned from the locker room. The highlights don’t truly capture how electric that moment was live. It was pure pandemonium.
his highlight video does a nice job capturing the game:
That highlight also includes Boogie’s infamous postgame interview with Kayte Christensen, where Boogie rants that “it’s getting ridiculous” over and over. In that postgame interview he also insists that the mouth guard simply flew out of his mouth.
The Boogie rollercoaster included some frustrating lows, but the highs were a blast. This was one of the most fun games of his Kings tenure.
”Pandemonium” is the perfect word. I was there and the place was nuts. One of my favorite Kings moments.
Perfectly stated; if any moment captured both the highs and lows of DeMarcus Cousins, this is certainly up there. It was wild watching this game live on TV.
OT: Glad that’s over

This is how it went down. I know. I was there. I was in the room.
Sean Marks: “Kevin, we have a trade we are ready to accept on the table from the Sacramento Kings. They are offering Sabonis, Fox, Murray, a pick, and an autographed Anjali Ranadive poster for you.
You have two options: 1) stay here in Brooklyn or 2) Go to Sacramento and win an average of 28 games a year for the next 4 years, but you’ll get to sit courtside for all the Warriors playoff games with Kelsey Grammer and Kings owner Vivek Ranadive. The choice is yours.
Kevin Durant: “I’m a Net for life.”
Marks: “Excellent, I knew we could come to an agreement” turns to PR staffer “Release the prepared statement.”
My guy.
Cousins must’ve remembered Adams was an Aussie right about this point, and Adams would’ve pretty much mopped the floor with Boogie’s face. Which would’ve been worth the price of admission and then some.
Adams is a Kiwi, not an Aussie.
Kiwi, Kahwi.
Always so smart and unbelievably classy.
Ty Lawson, Aaron Afflalo, Anthony Tolliver, Kosta Koufos, Matt Barnes!
Those were the days?
The 2016-17 Kings roster was one of my least favorite interactions of the team in recent memory.
*Iteration…stupid autocorrect.
OT: Phoenix getting some of their OG Jerseys back this year.
Looking at you, Kings. Where them 2000-2002 jerseys at????
Yeah, gonna disagree on that one. He spit it at the bench.
allergies
At the very least, the Kings did provide some sort of entertainment value those years (albeit in a WWE sort of way).
Oh I think in the heat of the moment he did. I’m just choosing passive voice in that sentence because at the end of the day we don’t know for sure.
Let’s ask Jerry Reynolds if he knows the truth of what happened there.
Spit it out, Jerry!
So talented, but so angry
Fun fact: Luka Doncic has same number of technical fouls over the last three seasons as DMC did in his last 3 full seasons with the Kings. Both were at 48 over 3 years.
It’s amazing what winning does for you. See also: Green, Draymond.
Luka does something to win games in between all the technicals though. Cousins would argue with the ref instead of playing for about 50% of the game.
Luka argues while playing and crushing other teams defense. Much more productive cry baby.
Fun Fact: Luka Doncic isn’t a colossal douchebag.
Facts make it difficult to enjoy this team.
I love the guy calling that highlights video! What a beast mode game. Ridiculous!
So much talent. So much anger to manage. Ultimately, so disappointing
