Love that pick for sixth man of the year. I hope Chip wins it.

I think I get the reasoning for Duarte in the starting 5.

(1) on defense, Fox needs to conserve some energy so that he can do his thing in the 4th quarter. ideally the starting SG should be able to guard the other team’s best guard.

(2) on offense, to start the game, the team likes to run it through Domas. some rapport is there already. and he’s a good spot-up shooter. Now that Keegan is in his 2nd year, the starting SG does not always have to be a top option on offense.

even if Duarte starts, Huerter, Monk and/or Davion might get more minutes throughout the game and finish. In theory, it makes sense. it might work.

If Barnes is not pulling down rebounds, would it be worthwhile to go with a Fox, Duarte, Huerter, Murray, Domas starting five?

I’m not advocating a change in the starting 5. I’m just saying, I get the reasoning and it’s worth considering.

If Duarte starts then you might in theory trade both Huerter and Mitchell for a close to star like OG Anunoby. Your would at least add a first and maybe a second to do this. If Mitchell were to be traded IMO Ellis could backup Fox. At 6’6″ and a good wingspan and he plays really good defense and also shoots the 3 better than Mitchell. Of course this depends if Duarte can replace Huerter. Interesting thought. Your second unit would be Ellis, Monk, Barnes, Lyles and McGee. If Duarte was having a bad night Monk IMO would be great next to Fox.

What I can’t wrap my head around is that the Kings brought in Huerter to replace Buddy, and most of us would agree Huerter was an upgrade over Buddy, but now we are discussing starting the guy who couldn’t crack the rotation behind Buddy in Indiana. Excluding his injuries last year, Duarte was behind Buddy, Mathurin, Nembhard, and Nesmith in the wing rotation. To be perfectly blunt, Duarte had a bad year last year so the discussion of him starting has me scratching my head.

The injury may have been a pretty good factor as it pertains to his regression. And different guys thrive/sink in different systems, so maybe the combination of health and system is in the mix here?

I think this is a shot over Huerter’s bow. That said, if Murray is going to take on an escalated role offensively, Duarte could wind up being the better baseline-to-baseline fit with the starting unit. My usual comment, followed by my usual disclaimer: I’m much more interested in who closes than who opens, and I know nothing.

Is Duarte a better defender than Huerter? I honestly don’t know. If so, are his defensive skills that much better than Huerter’s offensive skills to make a switch worthwhile? The only thing I know for certain is Huerter is the better shooter.

I’ll add this, if Duarte somehow becomes the starting 2 guard, I’m not sure you need both Monk and Huerter coming off the bench. I’d prefer a defensive wing in place of one of those two.

It’s a sum of its parts question. To your point regarding Huerter as a bench piece, I wholly agree that if Duarte pans out, you go looking for a true 3-D wing, for Huerter if attainable.

I understand fully what you are saying. I only threw out a hpothetical idea. I only thought what Monty has said all along that is if the Kings can improve the team both on offense and defense then he will do it. For one IMO Anunoby is far better than Barnes both in offense and defense and is much younger then a trade like this might help the Kings. If Duarte isn’t the answer then Monk might be.

Mitchell is irreplaceable in my opinion. there is good defense, and then there’s great defense, and then wayyyy off the bell curve is Davion’s defense. he changes the game every time he steps on the court. I wouldn’t trade him.

The only pre-season game that ever mattered was Doug Christie vs Rick Fox. 😤

Whatever the Preseason record is this year: 2-3, 1-4, 0-5 will be as meaningful as the PreSeason record for the last 17 seasons.

I dare you to spend the time to look for those past records. I double dog dare you.

As for Huerter, Duarte, Monk and sure Keon Ellis as the 2 Guard rotation; Mike Brown is telling you that he has options and wants to explore those options by coming out publicly and shuffling his deck a bit. What does that mean? Heck if I know, other than Coach Brown and his staff take this winning thing seriously and it makes me believe that no one from the front office or ownership is whispering in his ear on playing time.
