Monte McNair has earned an extension

Monte rolled the dice and won.
By | 87 Comments | Dec 6, 2022

Sep 27, 2021; Sacramento Kings, CA, USA; Sacramento Kings general manager Monte McNair poses for a photo during media day. Mandatory Credit: Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

When the Sacramento Kings hired Monte McNair three offseasons ago he was given a relatively simple mandate: end the drought. Other tasks were at the top of his to-do list as he joined the Kings, whether that was figuring out what to do with Luke Walton, deciding on Bogdan Bogdanovic’s future with the organization, or cleaning up the mess that was Vlade Divac’s roster, but all of those were minor parts of the major storyline that was, and still is, Sacramento’s multi-decade postseason absence.

For the first 18 or so months of Monte’s tenure, that goal seemed to be more theoretical than practical, as the front office often appeared content with their players and their assets. Minor trades took place, and good to excellent draft picks were made, but the Kings didn’t accrue assets to make a big play, nor did they make any significant win-now moves, despite being linked to big names such as Ben Simmons, Pascal Siakam, and John Collins for multiple seasons. The rumored, and now proven, strategy of targeting All-Star level players to pair with De’Aaron Fox always seemed a little convenient for a management team that hadn’t accomplished much in the hard and fast data of wins and losses. In the first two seasons with McNair at the helm, the Kings failed to win more games than in Vlade Divac’s final season as General Manager. Concerns grew that waiting to reel in that big fish would always be just that – waiting.

And then Monte McNair shut everyone up.

As has been well-documented and well-discussed, mostly by Tyrese Haliburton himself, Monte sent Haliburton, a second-year player who very much looked like a future All-Star, and Buddy Hield to the Indiana Pacers for Domantas Sabonis, a two-time All-Star known for his excellent passing, scoring, and rebounding, but not so much for his defense. The Kings also received salary filler. In a less-noted, but still valuable play, McNair also tricked the Milwaukee Bucks and the Detroit Pistons into surrendering Donte DiVincenzo and Trey Lyles for Marvin Bagley. The Kings snagged their All-Star to play next to De’Aaron Fox, but the risks were enormous, as were the potential rewards.

Despite the massive trade, the Kings still didn’t win to close the 2021-2022 season, and despite De’Aaron Fox looking like a brand new player, they still missed the lowly play-in tournament by more than a little. Fox played at an All-NBA level for 16 games, and Domantas Sabonis looked terrific as always, but the Kings had no defense, no identity, no coaching, and no quality supporting cast.

All eyes were on the front office to start this past summer, as the Kings clearly had a ways to go and Monte McNair was entering the final season of his three-year deal. The front office had their All-Star in Domantas Sabonis and their potential All-Star in De’Aaron Fox, but nothing else was certain. Beyond anything else, the franchise needed something rarely seen in Sacramento: a culture change. Enter NBA Champion Mike Brown.

Perhaps more than any other addition, even that of Domantas Sabonis, Mike Brown has been Monte McNair’s greatest accomplishment to date. He has unlocked both the offensive and defensive potential of a roster that many believed would be a scoring juggernaut that wouldn’t play any defense. Brown has brought with him both credibility and personality, with a healthy dose of accountability to boot. For the first time in years, Kings fans believe, and more importantly, Kings players believe, that they can win on any given night.

Of course, even great coaches can only do so much with middling roster, and that’s why Monte McNair didn’t simply stop at hiring who appears to be the perfect coach for this team at this time. Over the summer, McNair targeted shooters, shooters, and more shooters, a strategy that has paid dividends night after night after night. Malik Monk was locked up on a team-friendly deal, Kevin Huerter was acquired for pennies on the dollar, and Keegan Murray looks like the long-term solution at one of the forward spots. Even the end-of-bench acquisitions, while not exactly productive night-to-night, can act as annoying defensive presences on the defensive end of the court in practice. The roster isn’t without it’s shortcomings, mostly at backup wing, and perhaps the backup center spot, but it’s an NBA-caliber depth chart, something that hasn’t been seen in Sacramento in quite some time.

At the start of this season, most fans would have been thrilled, and perhaps a little surprised, by a 10th-place, play-in finish. This roster, thus far, has far exceeded those expectations. The Kings are good, and not boy-are-we-lucky-we-faced-some-bad-teams-and-managed-a-seven-game-win-streak good. They’re capable enough and confident enough to pull out a win on any given night, and more importantly, they’re only getting better. Over the first 10 games of the season, the Kings ranked 12th in offense, 25th in defense, and 17th in net rating, about where most experts had them placed in preseason. Over the past 11 games, they’re 5th in offense, 5th in defense, and 4th in net rating, and since October 29th, the end of their four-game losing streak to start the season, the Kings have posted a record of 13-5, the second-best mark in the NBA over that stretch.

In September of 2020, Monte McNair was hired to accomplish exactly one thing in Sacramento: build a playoff roster. He’s done that, even if it wasn’t done by exactly traditional means. The Kings are younger, hungrier, and better than they have been in 17 years, and it’s time to reward the man responsible for such an accomplishment.

Monte McNair has earned his long-term extension in Sacramento.

If Vlade deserved a 4-yr extension after drafting Bagley, Monte certainly deserves at least 2 more years to keep building what he’s building.

It is worth factoring though that the same person who made those prior bad hires and extensions, could again be the decision maker if McNair leaves.

The idea that Vivek could be feeling himself in the offseason from a playoff bound roster, negate outsourcing the recruitment ( a choice that led to Monte), seems totally in the realm of possibility which is a terrifying prospect.

Hopefully Vivek ends the trend and signs Monte to an extension. I’ve been saying this for a while now. Every time Sacramento has some things going good, Vivek somehow manages to screw it up. Firing Malone when it seems the team were trending in the right direction. Firing Joerger after a 39 win season. And now with Monte finally been able to assemble a really good team and is currently winning. Whatever the record is at the end of this season, Mcnair deserves an extension and should continue to build this team as he sees fit.

Would he get an extension under Vivek? 100% he should!

But knowing Vivek there is always that chance he screws it up and let Monte walk. I mean I wouldn’t be shocked if that happens. Prove me wrong Vivek!

I said last year I would have tried to trade the roster leaving just Tyrese and the Kings chose the exact opposite. Considering the context of the franchise, our owner and the market evaluation of our roster, at the time I saw the reasons for why they went the other way. That said having made that choice, I think Monte targeted and did so as about as sensibly as you could.

I always loved Sabonis’s game even prior to the trade, and the more I watch him the more its obvious he is the teams pendulum, a connector that creates shades of the best Kings from yesteryear. Im biased but he may be the most underrated player in the league. Those skills are only helped by Brown’s lessons in GSW with creating DHO’s, offball movement and general excellent balance of halfcourt acumen and getting up and down. A hire as stated above that should secure McNair’s job alone. Add Fox’s improvement (be it from the coach, Domas or both), the Huerter and Monk pickups, sensible drafting (even smart flyers in the 2nd and undrafted lists) this is the most competent GM since peak Petrie and its not particularly close.

Monte has elegantly danced between a rash owner, starved fanbase and ballsy choices and come out sensibility. He’s navigated a myriad of interests in a team that has been stagnant by a past inability to have sound rationale to our decisions, or balance short and longterm goals. The result has been massive squad turnover and a collective that mirrors this markets best teams that still is ascending and can improve.

I take the bird in the hand, on his own merit but especially when I factor who may be making that decision if he is not retained. Things are looking green, but the list of charlatans in the past that have tried to cozy their way to being this teams GM with impressionable Vivek is long. It all could crumble very quickly with the wrong step.

I think you would go along and understand what Monty said at the beginning of this year. He not only wants to get into the play offs, but stay in the play offs by making the Kings better ever year by draft, trades or free agency. His ultimate goal is high. that being a championship. The only way he can achieve this is to give him an extension on his contract.

If vivek fucks this up I will never forgive him. Actually he could give Monte a 7 year extension, have the Kings break their playoff curse and manage to draft Wenbyama and I will still never forgive him for all the mistakes he’s made as managing partner/governour of this franchise.

So has Barnes. It would make a lot more positive if both Monte and Barnes got an extension before the deadline. It would tell me they are dedicated to making this Kings current trajectory stretch beyond this season.

I was thinking 3 years 50M, front loaded with a 3rd year player option. That would likely be a discount based on the fact that Bojan Bogdanovic recently signed a 2 year $40M extension with Detroit, and he is 33 while Barnes is just 30.

So yeah, roughly a $16M per year deal, but I’d prefer to cut off a year of that deal to take him to age 33. That kind of contract doesn’t hurt his trade value and potentially keeps him here long term if he wishes.

That being said, he likely is good from one more real good deal in the league, and he just might get that in free agency, which is why it would be nice to lock him up now.

It’s still early, but this could very well end up being true. I know there was early talk of Keegan being ROY and now there is talk of Monk being 6thMOY, but I think we are soon going to hear about Brown being COY. If this team cracks 40 wins, or even gets 45+ there should rightfully be COY talk along with GM of the year talk around the Kings.

I don’t see many reasons to believe they can’t win at least 40 games as FKC said.

And I firmly believe this is a 45 win team. I don’t necessarily assume anything will happen with so much season left, but I don’t see any reason to waver at this point either.

At this point, I actually think something will have gone really wrong if they don’t win 40 games this year. If you just look at the team the last couple weeks, none of their starters outside of Brown have played THAT well and they’ve won 3 in a row. Fox has been pretty average and Huerter hasn’t hit many shots. Murray has been a little bit better.

What’s exciting is that this team just has a lot of answers right now. If Fox and Huerter are off, Monk and Davis aren’t. I think it’s possible this team is actually a lot better than we realize. The advanced numbers sort of point to that. This road trip is probably the hardest of the season so it’ll be a good test.

Injuries happen. So far the Kings have been lucky when it comes to those.

My thought is Domas is the glue that holds it all together. My Christmas wish is Sabonis stays healthy.. throughout the Playoffs 🙏😁🙏

Personally I think the Sabonis trade is his best move. I love Hali, but the losing culture of this franchise had gotten to a point where I don’t know if it could be changed from the inside. We needed someone from the outside, who hadn’t had their career poisoned by whatever curse it was that hung over this team. Over the last 16 years, we’ve had some decent coaches, we’ve had decent role players, we’ve even had an all-star, but none of it ever made any difference. Obviously this roster is the best we’ve had, and Mike Brown is the best coach we’ve had, but having your best player (with the clout of multiple all-star appearances) also be one of your hardest workers and best natural leaders, completely buy-in to the system, the team, and the coach is in my mind THE thing that has lifted the cloud here.

At least extend Monte to coincide with Brown so they are tied together. Otherwise, this will lead to the same problem where we overlap Coach and GM and end up with little to no continuity or culture.

“In September of 2020, Monte McNair was hired to accomplish exactly one thing in Sacramento: build a playoff roster. He’s done that, even if it wasn’t done by exactly traditional means.”

I didn’t realize we made the playoffs. Hopefully this is a playoff roster, but I’ll believe Kangz and playoffs when I see it, play-in doesn’t count in my book.

I wonder if all of the haters want to still fire Monte and trade Fox 😂

I wonder how many haters you can count on one hand that wanted to fire Monte AND trade Fox.

And I’m one of the guys who favored tradeing Fox to hand Hali the keys for many reasons. It seems that Monte felt that keeping both wasn’t going to work. So here we are.

Well said. Haliburton is a great player but this team, needed some change. Monte was smart enough to do what he had to do.

I think he would’ve traded Fox over Haliburton but the Pacers probably preferred the lower contract.

Keep Haliburton snd keep Monte. My vote for a long time.

Monte couldn’t get Sabonis for Fox so it is what it is now. Extend Monte because he makes good decisions with what he has.

Exactly, it’s entirely possible that Monte wanted to trade Fox over Hali, but Fox’s trade value last year was essentially zero. Monte made the best of a bad situation.

To be fair: The Kings were very hate-able the last 16 years….

That’s why I’m liking the streams. They’ve all been the other teams announcers. Interesting to hear the other perspective.

Nice write up. I’d advocate for a three year extension. Enough security, not so much to get lazy and pay at the league average for GMs with sizable bonuses for each level of playoff series wins.
