It is common knowledge that the Sacramento Kings need a point guard and a new report from HoopsHype indicates they are interested in Tyus Jones.
The 10-year NBA veteran is an unrestricted free agent and played 81 games for the Phoenix Suns last season, averaging 10.2 points, 5.3 assists and 2.4 rebounds. He shot 44% from the field and 41% from three. He started in 58 games. His best season as a pro was the previous season with the Washington Wizards, when he averaged 12 points, 7.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds and 48% from the field and 41% from three.
According to Cleaning the Glass, he was in the 85th percentile last season in assist-to-usage ratio. His usage rate was in the 25th percentile also, a good ratio to slot next to Zack LaVine and Malik Monk. He is in the 90th percentile for accuracy in three pointers. On defense, he is only in the 21st percentile in steal% (he has seen a steady decline here) and the 4th percentile in block% (same percentile twice in the last three seasons). However, he was in the 79th percentile for the Suns last season in terms of points allowed per 100 possessions when he was on the floor.
He is durable considering how many games he played this season, and a solid NBA point guard, but at 6’1” he has his limitations defensively. But he can facilitate the offense and is a pretty good shooter on low usage. The Suns had signed him to a one-year deal last season for $3.3 million.
He isn’t flashy, but yes, he can play point guard so he checks that box.
Monk, LaVine and Tyus would be a disaster defensively, and they would be getting the bulk of the at guard. Add in Carter and Ellis, and minutes would be a huge question mark.
If the Kings were to move one of Monk, Ellis, Carter, then I could see adding Tyus. If not, then what is the plan at that position?
Agreed. But don’t move Ellis. Use him as our version of Caruso off the bench. Move Monk or Carter and DDR for a forward to play next to Keegan and I think we can be okay.
I’d prefer a taller PG that is a plus on D though.
Keon should stay. Monk is the one I am okay with them trading. Too erratic offensively, terrible defensively.
Love Malik, seems like a great guy and always will like him for resigning at a cheaper rate last summer. But seems like each year his efficiency is declining, and he’s less like the guy that had the career resurgence in LA, and more like Hornets version of himself. He’s better suited for the bench, as his turnovers, defense and shooting percentages are very Hield-esque. Definitely better at play making, driving and throwing down crazy dunks but one of those guys that doesn’t seem like a winning baller. Inefficiency and lack of defense can really hurt your team.
I would also like Perry to have a look at the other Jones Tre who does play really good on ball defense. Also can score but a couple of points less than Tyrus but just like Tyrus can facilitate, pass, literally no turnovers per game. He knows his role and plays it well.
Agreed, If the Kings were targeting just one of the Jones brothers, I’d prefer Tre as well. He is also youger.
That’s what they need. Exactly why they won’t do it.
Yes. I’d like Tre more as well. Though they may be looking at Tyus because they can get him cheaper.
I think Monk should be traded.
I hate it, because he is so much fun and awesome, but he has value and is a logical choice to balance the roster.
Agreed. A simpler solution than signing a free agent PG, which so many other guards on the roster, is to move Monk for a starting caliber PG. A Cole Anthony package makes more sense to me. Keep the powder dry for a wing.
Why do that the team is going nowhere for awhile. Just play Carter and wait for next years draft or something to break. For example if Yoenis gets moved there may be some collateral damage to pick up.
That would be a solid tank like move, and I could get behind it, but Vivek likely won’t.
If it makes sense Vivek won’t do it. He’s an ass
That should be a new TKH shirt:
Kangz: If it makes sense, don’t do it.
“Spending dollars makes no cents.” – Vivek Ranadive
A penny and Vivek were crossing a bridge. Vivek fell off, the penny didn’t. Why?
Because the penny has more
centssense.Ha. Yes.
You’re most likely correct but I’m saying what they should do not what they will do. Viviek should just get Westbrook. Won’t cost him much, has his point guard and fits what they have.
The plan would be to score with an almost complete disregard to defense. Don’t love it but hey at least he’s a PG.
IMO they will move Monk. Adamsite had a good idea of combining DDR and Monk and one other low usage player for Michael Porter Jr. I like the idea and for me that low usage player would be Daron Holmes.
Correct me please. DDR and Monk for MPJ and Daron Holmes. Holmes being the low usage player. I know he was hurt but should be able to play this coming year. I really like the guy.
Denver will not do that for sure. Let’s be realistic
I think Denver would do it. They get two good scorers. Denver has a good interest in trading MPJ and they have money concerns plus they aren’t happy where they are going with what they have. They want to move some pieces this off season. IMO it could happen. My only concern is MPJ’s defense. IMO it isn’t that bad.
MPJ is an incosnistent player who seems to get injured and may be too soft in general. That’s not a good trade.
I think there needs to be two trade: Monk and DDR. Each can get some role players and I think many fans see the value of getting Cole Anthony and my favorite, W. Carter. This improves the defense a bit, gets us taller, and brings some scoring and possible ball handling. The biggest win is that Keegan can play the 3.
Jack, the Nuggets blog site, regularly burns MPJ as a traffic cone on defense, is questionable with consistency, but can have a 20 to 30 pt game every 5 games or so. And they also regularly crucify his contract.
Sounds like a perfect fit here!
Yeah, I’m not an MPJ fan. Of course he’s the one Denver will try to move because he makes 38 and 41 million the next 2 seasons. And is easier to replace than Murray or Gordon.
Yup. Kangs put themselves on a real
bind with the owners obsession with Levine. You can’t bring in more non defenders.
Get rid of all you good players and bring back Levine/DDR- etc. makes no sense.
Hoping beyond hope that Perry can overrides the idiot and build/do what’s needed.
PG- and a 3/4. Each need to defend and shoot. End of story.
#selltheteam
I have also learned that the Pelicans are putting up everyone for trade. If that’s so then IMO we good get Herb Jones for Monk a first and a second.
Sold on this trade for sure. Still need to move DDR as well.
There is a 4 way trade out there where the Heat get Derozan and the Kings get Tobias Harris. IMO good trade.
No thanks, he is agin and inconsistent.
I disagree. Harris is one of the most solid consistent players around. A real team player and knows his role. He is on a 2 year contract that isn’t bad. He starts for the Pistons as of now but for the Kings a solid bench player who plays either SF or PF.
Good ideas but will they do them?
Only way to tell.
I prefer Trey Murphy for the first and second round + Monk. Herb Jones is great, but for a first rounder, we need someone to stretch the floor as opposed to focus on defense only. Getting both for Monk and two first rounders would be awesome, since they can combined be 3 and D, like Keegan.
I too would prefer TM3, but it seems Herb Jones will be more of the simple path and at a cheaper rate. I don’t want the Kings getting fleeced and we don’t have the assets left to make other moves, like moving on from DDR. DDR HAS TO GO in order for us to improve.
Not for Tobias Harris either. There was one trade idea out there a few weeks ago. DDR for Austin Reeves. I could see that. Then we certainly would need to move on from Monk and Carter. Keon and Reeves off the bench would be deadly. If Reeves accepts the role.
That idea I also like.
Why would we need to move on from Carter? IMO after this summer he would backup our starting point guard who IMO would be Tre Jones. Reaves can play SF.
In this scenario, Keon is the back up point, AR at the 2, we retain Lavaria, IJones…spot mins at the PF spot, and hopefully we still have big Val. Hell of a 2nd unit. Big energy and defense. AR being the main scorer. No need for Carter especially if he has trade value on the market.
Nobody is safe.
Herb Lones is exactly want we want. He is one of the best defensive players in the league. Can free up Murray. The two together would be a great defensive team. Also remember Jones shoots the 3 at 40%. That also stretches the floor.
What happened to him defensively, used to be pretty solid in MEM? I’d rather they try to use Carter and work a deal to trade for Pippen Jr. or maybe even Nembhard.
Those 2 would be great. Nembhard probably won’t work as he will get 18 mil next year.
absolutely infuriates me that Lavine had made Monk’s presence on the roster redundant
I’d rather go get a younger and better version of him, say Cole Anthony.
Yup, just posted the same to your above post!
Speaking of Suns, looks like they hired their new coach.
Coaching in the NBA is the ultimate and wildest game of musical chairs.
Conducting a proper coaching search, what a novel concept.
Noticing a trend here: x team hires a young unproven HC, but stacks the lead assistant chairs with vet coaches. Teams are trying to pay less for the coaching job since they can easily fire the HC, even after winning COY. Sneaky.
Recapping, the Kings have invested draft picks in current NBA point guards De’Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton, Davion Mitchell, and Devin Carter, and currently they are in desperate need of a…PG.
You can’t make this stuff up.
Tyreke Evans is available.
I’d take a flyer on Beno Udrih. Still only 42 yo.
Mike Bibby is available in between Sac State games.
Draft that Slovenian PG- oh? MB3 is better???
That doesn’t even mention IT. The Kings have had 3 all-star caliber PGs in the Vivek era and have nothing to show for it.
That is the singular most astonishing thing to me as it pertained to the Fox trade. You knew that you were leaving a gaping hole at PG, and you did not address it in the trade, opting instead to onboard yet another shooting guard.
Vivek still believes in point-Buddy! 😉
I think they really thought Monk could fill that void, and maybe they expect more from Carter, but yeah, they really shot themselves in the foot in terms of roster construction going forward. To now have no money for a player that is arguably has the most important role on the floor is some real dumbfuckery. I don’t believe there is another team in the league that doesn’t have a starting caliber PG.
As of now Carter isn’t a starting point guard but IMO a good backup at this time. Keep him.
The longer this stuff goes on, the more convinced I am that the Kings front office is run on fantasy basketball points.
If you thought they could be championship competitive getting a point guard with the assets they have then they need a point guard. They need young players, draft capital and payroll relief. Nothing else at this point.
otherwise just get Westbrook.
Heaven rorbid.
It is so ridiculous. The owner has systematically gotten rid of all the talent (or not drafted) on this team and on the bench and has almost nothing to show for it. Worse than nothing- middling.
Watching Hali just makes me want to kick Vivek out of sac-if only I could.
J- Will still has more handles than 90% of guards currently playing . Oops, likely 100% .
What in the hell is this organization thinking. If you’re trying to win now you go out and try to make a deal for Harden or some impact player on thin ground with their organization. They shouldn’t do either but this is a forever status quo move.
They should be moving ALL their high price veterans for long term payroll reduction, draft capital and young talent. Just play your first round draft pick Carter and some other young guy.
My Roster
Kuminga – Free agency
LaRavia
Carter – Just play him and see what you have
Keon Ellis
Murray
Peyton Watson – trade with Denver for Val
Alexander Walker – free agency
Sabonis – keep but look for a haul of draft picks. He’s a perfect fit for OKC and they have a ton of picks to trade. Need to find salary fillers
Keeping Monk for now.
Not a bad plan, but too logical for Vivek’s liking.
I especially like adding NAK.
How do the Kings afford Kuminga in free agency?
Looks like LaVine and DDR just disappear!
What makes you think he’s going to command unreasonable. 3 years $30 million or let it go. Can’t go after something that will hamstring us long run. Same with Walker and he might be unrealistic but more proven than Kuminga
He’ll be getting far more than $10M per year. Hell, Moses Moody signed a larger extension with the Dubs at 3 years at $37M. Kuminga is likely going to get something closer to $15-20M per year, similar or more than what Obi Toppin got in Indy.
They can’t and IMO doesn’t fit what Perry and CHristie want
Trade Sabonis. As of now it isn’t working.
They should trade Levine and DDR but no one is dumb enough to take Levine except our guy.
Might have to trade Monk and/or Sabonis but who the F knows what these knuckleheads will do…. except the wrong thing.
We will find out quick if v is giving Perry any power.
He has a hefty contract and is the hardest worker on the team. A trade would not help us move forward now and thus not worth it to most teams that are near the 8/9 seed. Keep winning by losing Monk and DDR. JV can be traded too for more athleticism.
Narrator: “None of this will happen.”
If MM was still GM I’d say it’s a slam dunk we sign TJ given MM’s love for undersized guards. I hope Perry prefers large sized players.
My current safeword for all Kings related news: “Meh”.
Some news may take me to “Bleh!”-level.
That’s probably the best way to look at it, the lease frustrating.
Because if you step back and see what they’ve done, it’s absolutely horrendous and disgusting. Vivek with a master class, and how to ruin a franchise.
Your Sacra”Meh”to Kings!
Sacra”Meh”nto Kings after the Fox trade!
Just looking at the rough numbers, the Kings sit currently around $161M with their 7 guaranteed deals of LaVine, Sabonis, DDR, Monk, Murray, JV, and Carter. Should the Kings pick up the options of Keon, Isaac Jones and the non-guaranteed TD deal they will be at $167.9M. The cap is set for $154.6M with the tax line at $187.9. That puts the Kings right around $20M below the tax line, of which Vivek has never crossed, and nor should he with this roster.
I’d imagine they aren’t going to bring back TD at $2.5M, So lets say they have roughly $22M in tax space and stand at 9 rostered players. They need to have 14 by start of the season. 6 players are needed with $22M in space.
Should the Kings play in free agency for a guy like Tyus Jones? He’d likely want a healthy chunk of the MLE, which the Kings would need to use to pay anyone more than the vet minimum for bi-annual exception.
Is it wise for the Kings to use around $8-10M (butt-pulled figures) of the $22M in under tax space on a guy like Tyus Jones? They’d still have no other large wings other than Keegan and 5 more roster spot to fill.
I feel the Kings need to make trades before they venture into free agency wanting for a fringe starting PG. Move DDR and/or Monk for a starting PG or wing.
I’m sure they’ll find creative ways to fill out the roster.
Jimmer really grew his hair, huh? Still has that textbook follow-through.
Trades are the only way this roster gets balanced and improves.
It’s wild that such a crappy team is in such a tight bind cap wise.
I think you could get your point guard in free agency. I like Tyrus Jones but along with Adamsite we think Tre Jones would be a better fit. Plays better defense is 4 years younger and has all the other tools the Kings need and want. What else do you want?
I’m hoping we can trade into the 1st round somehow. We need to get younger.
oh look! Another player that is reported to have drawn interest by the Sacramento Kings.
Other more interesting things:
Every Monday, Scott Perry posts these very nice positive affirmations on X (#MondayMotivation by ScottPerryGM)
Jordan Ott might be the next Eric Spoelstra. Call me an ageist, but he is 40 years old and has been coaching since 2013. I don’t see players like Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker wanting to stay through this direction. I’ll add those 3 to the Summer shuffle along with Giannis, Dame, the Pelicans, the Raptors, and whatever Boston choses to do. How many strive to follow the Thunder model (and to some extent the Pacers)?
The OKC Thunder were 29-1 against the East this season. Twenty-frikkin’-nine to One.
Any predictions on the NBA Finals by you all?
For me: Gentleman’s sweep, though the full broom handle version wouldn’t surprise me.
I’m thinking 4-1 as well.
Same, but a 4-0 sweep by OKC wouldn’t surprise me either.
For the love of COBY WHITE please!!!
We definitely need more Bulls!
(I really like Coby White though)
Just don’t give up Keegan, Carter and three firsts for him.
/sarc
Yogi…. Ferrell 2.0… so uninspiring. He couldn’t help the Suns team make the play in and they had zero other point guards on their squad. Typical Vivek move. Let’s just try and cherry pick the whole season so you don’t need anyone to run the O.
Closer to Darren Collision or Ty Lawson 2.0 . To your point, very uninspiring !
