The Sacramento Kings have started adding assistant coaches to Luke Walton’s staff, according to a report from The Athletic’s Sam Amick. Amick reports that the Kings are adding Bob Beyer, Jesse Mermuys, and Roy Rana. Bobby Jackson was previously reported to be staying with the coaching staff. Although nothing was officially reported, it’s assumed that Jackson will be the only assistant to stay with the Kings from Dave Joerger’s staff.

Shortly after hiring Walton there were reports that the Kings were meeting with Jeff Hornacek and other undisclosed assistant coach candidates. Amick notes that the Kings still expect to add 2-3 more coaches. Hornacek could possibly still be in play, as none of the assistants named as listed as being Walton’s lead assistant.

As Amick notes, there is still a pending investigation into allegation made against Luke Walton. The Kings and NBA are in the midst of a joint independent investigation, but reports indicated it could be weeks or even months before results would be known.

Regarding the new staff, Bob Beyer spent last season as an assistant under Billy Donovan with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Before that he spent 4 years as an assistant to Stan Van Gundy with the Detroit Pistons. Beyer had also been on Van Gundy’s staff with the Orlando Magic. He’s been known to run team film sessions, and has been described by Stan Van Gundy as a guy who specializes in coming up with ideas on how to tweak a system.

Jesse Mermuys spent the past two seasons on Walton’s staff in Los Angeles. Prior to that he’d worked as an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, and spent a year as the head coach and assistant general manager for the Raptors 905 G-League team.

Roy Rana has been the head coach for Ryerson University in Toronto since 2009. He’s also been actively involved with the Canadian national teams. The early reactions from those familiar with his work suggest Rana may be a significant get for the Kings.
