The Sacramento Kings have officially announced Domantas Sabonis’ contract extension. The extension, which was first reported on July 2nd, increases Domas’ salary for the upcoming season and then adds another 4 years after that. The numbers break down as follows, courtesy of James Ham:
If the $217 million figure for Sabonis’ extension is correct, the Kings gave him an extra $7.7 million on 2023-24 salary in renegotiate and extension, slightly off the $8M we predicted.
Breakdown:
23-24: $29.7M
24-25: $41.6M
25-26: $44.9M
26-27: $48.5M
27-28: $52.4M— James Ham (@James_HamNBA) July 2, 2023
As we’ve previously discussed, this should be seen as a big win for the Kings. Sabonis is entering his prime, is a three-time All Star, and was All-NBA last season. He’s the central hub of the Kings offense, and a huge part of the team’s success.
As Frankie Cartoscelli of Sactown Sports 1140 notes, this also addresses one of the few lingering concerns around the trade that brought Sabonis to Sacramento.
Last year, there was a massive sense that the Kings-Pacers trade would be a failure for Sacramento if two things didn’t happen by Summer 2024:
– The Kings end the playoff drought
– Domantas Sabonis signs a long-term extensionBoth things happened before the end of 2023.

The Kings have a clear direction for the franchise. They have cornerstones Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox, and Keegan Murray under team control for years to come, and have surrounded them with a strong supporting cast. The team obviously still has flaws and areas where they can improve, but the front office has built a strong foundation and now has the opportunity to continue to tinker around the edges to push this team to new heights.
That Frankie tweet almost brings a tear to my eye. Stability and hope for the future!!
LIGHT THE STOGIE!
I hereby announce that I am officially content.
Hold off Rik, as we still haven’t seen who is gonna be Sabonis’ dominant back up that we desperately need. Running it back is great but there is still a glaring hole in the line up.
I wouldn’t be against landing KAT or Bam as our bench center for Sabonis.
Not enough money to land him and I think we will just have to pray our bigs on the roster come through to help Sabonis. Question is will coach Brown play them?
Exactly. The moment V backed off is the moment everything changed.
Very good big 3 in Sac now. Suddenly they have talent and a foundation.
If Sabonis learns to hit the mid range consistently-look out. Unstoppable.
Fake the handoff, hit that open jumper!
