The Sacramento Kings defeated the Phoenix Suns in dramatic fashion on the road Wednesday night on a three-pointer by Harrison Barnes.
Following the game, Luke Walton, Buddy Hield, Tyrese Haliburton and Barnes spoke to the media.
Here are some key quotables from the postgame.
Poor Play In the First Half
Harrison Barnes: “I think there is something to be said, obviously, about the win, but I think overall in this game we just have to be better. In the first half, the way we played just not necessarily the [right] compete level. Going into the fourth up 10 and kind of just letting them work their way back. It’s one of those things where you win a game, you say, we did all of these things to win the game, but there could have been easily 1 or 2 shots or plays they made that we say, we lost another game down the stretch.”
Buddy Hield: “Too stagnant. Everything was pass, pass, we didn’t do enough penetration, not enough ball movement. I tried to be aggressive, but it put me into some trouble.”
Second-Half Turnaround
Tyrese Haliburton: “Just coming together as a team [at halftime] and kind of looking at ourselves in the mirror and we know we haven’t had a great second half in any of our games so far this year. We knew it was important that we had a good start to the third quarter. We came out right away and had a lot of deflections and steals and got up and down and before we knew it, we were right back in there. It was just big for us to start the third quarter well. Still, we know we can be a lot better in the fourth. We’ve just got to be better at closing games. That’s the next step if we want to make the playoffs and change the culture here.”
“When we got back to the locker room [at halftime], we were talking to each other and it was like man, that’s probably the worst half of basketball that we’ve played this season and we’re only down 8 to a team that was in the NBA Finals last year. To say that is like, well let’s just be better.” “I think that’s a testament to how much of a jump we have had from last season. We had a rough start to the first half, like I said, it’s probably our worst half of basketball this year, but we answered the bell.”
Luke Walton: “Much better second half. Now, our first half was pretty gross, but it’s find a way some nights and that’s a really good team we just played, and to come out and play like that in the second half with that energy, we start hitting the glass better, we started contesting shots better. We played at a faster pace and that’s how we have to do it for the whole game.”
“Tonight, honestly, in the second half the whole blueprint went out the window because we weren’t playing with near enough energy in that first half. So, the second half was strictly based on who was going to come out and play with the appropriate energy out there and competitive spirit and we found it there in the second half.”
Harrison Barnes Game-Winner
Buddy Hield: “You come to the gym, he’s [Barnes] one of the first guys there. Him and Mezi [Chimezie Metu]. He’s working his butt off man, and the hard work he’s putting in is showing. We want him shooting the ball more because he’s going to make lot of shots … so we need him to stay aggressive. No surprise to see where he’s at now. He’s been working hard every morning, every pregame, even on off days he’s one of the first guys here so he’s setting the tone right for this team.”
“The second half we were able to adjust and find a good rhythm and we can’t give up a 10-point lead like that, but thank God Harrison bailed us out with that.”
Harrison Barnes: “We were just trying to get a good look. We knew that worst-case scenario, we go to OT.” “That was our biggest thing, with no timeouts, just try to get a good look.”
Buddy Hield On His Dribbling
“That’s not what my team wants me to do because like, me dribbling the ball is not going to help us to be honest with you. But me just passing, chasing and making great plays, quick decisions to help my team.” “Especially being a good shooter, you’ve just got to pass and chase and make teams go over, and try to make the right plays for your team.”
A Few Takeaways
- Harrison Barnes is such a pro. He didn’t sit and dwell in his glory after making that shot. Instead, he offered accurate constructive criticism of the team’s play over the whole game.
- Also, more examples provided here of Barnes being one of the hardest workers on the team.
- It was nice to see how the team came together at halftime and realized how despite the poor performance they were still in it and made adjustments to make it happen in the second half. (Even if they almost lost it.)
- Buddy Hield basically admits here that him dribbling a lot and being overly aggressive gets him into trouble and that isn’t what the team wants him to do. If he can move without the ball, cut down on the turnovers, make quick decisions and focus solely on getting his shots up the team will certainly benefit more having him on the floor. He had a good night with 26 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks and was a +3 for the game. (He had 4 turnovers.)
- We have heard it so many times in recent years – this team just simply needs to “learn how to win.” Through the first four games we might…might…might have seen that actually taking place. All four games have tested the Kings ability to close. They are 2-2 in those situations against three playoff teams from last season and a good Golden State Warriors team.
- Interesting to see Walton say the second half rotation was based on who was going to play with the appropriate energy.
Don’t look now, but the Kings are .500 at the 5th seed in the standings and have the 1-4 New Orleans Pelicans on Friday.
This paradoxical. 2-2 seems like an aberration.
HB has really been the head of the snake for this team. Winning os contagious. This could be a catalyst for changing the losing mentality this team has faced for a decade and a half.
On the flip…2 of your core pieces have appeared to regress. With the new NBA mandates, the game is changing. ISO players like Beal, Harden, Lillard, and Fox willl no longer get the calls and own in Dribble Penetration. Just look at the decline. Players like Doncic, Morant, Curry, Ball, Trey, etc are not being altered in the same way. They are more versatile and can play both off the ball and ISO. Defenses are going to crowd players like Fox. Until Fox can consistently hit the mid and long range, his numbers and his effectiveness will be contained and his impact will be minimized.
Hali’s ceiling is a super role player and average starter. I don’t see a player that can take over a game or put a team on his back. I just don’t see it.
I may be Crucified,,, Mitchell would be fantastic running the point. I think trading one of Hali/Fox needs to happen.
If it’s not Simmons…then Porzingas, Siakam, Hachimira, Tatum, etc.
This team needs that Killer.
Right Now…30 year old Barnes is that guy.
You can’t build a winning future with Harrison is not feasible.
Barmes trade value can’t be any higher that it is now.
I don’t get why people keep banging the “trade Barnes” narrative, considering there’s also a ton of noise about this team’s overall lack of talent. He’s one of the handful of actual talents we have and he’s like a swiss army knife, but let’s go get Cam Reddish instead because he’s, what? Younger? Cheaper? Not as good at this point in time, I don’t think. Porzingis would hang out with Bagley on the bench, the best dressed front court to play less than 50% of their games.
I hear it as “lets trade the talent we have (because we haven’t gotten to the playoffs with it, never mind that can largely be traced back to the coach) and take back question marks, or injury-riddled cast offs. Tatum and Siakam aren’t going anywhere, unsurprisingly, so unless you’re getting back dollar for dollar value (and I don’t know who that would be, honestly,) how about we just enjoy Barnes’ work and hope ownership finally figures out the way to the playoffs starts with a coach who isn’t absolute garbage…?
This is really good content Blake, especially for those who live out of state and miss the Kings postgame interviews. Along with Brenden’s in depth article on how HB’s game is still evolving, its nice to see how the TKH team is in mid-season form so quickly into the season. Absolutely why I have a Patreon subscription, this is good stuff (and I cannot get enough of Jerry on the podcast).
The word is Cam Reddish is Available. 22 having a monster start to the year offensively. A lock down true 3. I don’t know what Atlanta would want.
But. I would definitely go after him.
I like Reddish. I also want McNair to chase Jerami Grant.
Grant and HB would be the highest level wings I have ever seen in Sac.
I like Reddish too.
I like these ideas, too. Someone on another thread suggested targeting Christian Wood. Reddish, Grant, Wood — those guys would probably accomplish what we hope to get with Simmons.
Watching Bulls-Knicks. Damn, the Bulls look hella good. Fast,
Great D, team looks completely reinvented.
Caruso is having a great game off the bench. I am a big Demar fan, this has been a fun team to be watching on League Pass. I think they are going to be tough all year.
DeMar is a killer on that team.
Absolutely. Having Demar and LaVine to close, with two excellent spot up shooters in Vuc and Ball is going to make them tough in close games.
Demar’s time in San Antonio made him a more complete player. Him just being willing to take 3’s opened up the mid range and paint even more. That team’s starting five is well balanced.
I think a lot of people have underestimated how good of passing that starting five has; Demar, Lavine, Vuc, and Ball are all good to very good passers. Tough loss to NY tonight, but as those vets get used to each other I think it is going to be dangerous team in the second half.
And their GM was hired just a few months before Monte. Eversley has rebuilt that team in 16 months. There are a total of 2 players still on the roster from when he took over and only 1 is playing in Zach LaVine. New GM, new coach, new team, new direction.
Meanwhile in Sacramento…
Maybe I’m crazy, but are 11 of the next 12 winnable? Winnable, as in conceivably possible. @Utah being the no.

It’s about the easiest stretch they have before the ASB. If they can’t Winn a lot of those games,
I don’t think they make the playoffs. Kings haven’t gone 11-1 probably ever. They won’t do it with this team for sure.
i am thinking 7-5. Charlotte is probably better than the Kings,
‘Utah. Minnesota’s big 3 is better than the Kings.
Kings are not going to beat Phoenix twice. And the Kings will choke against some team like the Spurs or Raptors. Kings have done nothing to prove they can consistently beat anyone let alone win 11 out of 12. They can certainly put together 2 9’gsme losing streaks.
The Kings of Sacramento have a bunch of “winnable” games coming up?

Prediction: 5-6, because KANGZ. Not good enough to establish any hope of playoff contention, but not quite bad enough to get Walton fired.
That kind of thinking doesn’t get anywhere. Before the start of the season, Tristan Thompson had a good way of rephrasing the cliche one game at a time. (you all can look it up)
The problem arose when TT was asked to defend it. 😉
Reading Rese’s and Luke’s answers about half-time do not give me any more confidence in Luke’s ability to make adjustments in this league.
????
goodddd thankssss youuuu
