Kings vs. Warriors Preview: Reign-y Day Kings

Can the Kings continue their solid play to start the season against a championship hopeful? Can I finish this preview before my power goes out again??
By | 10 Comments | Oct 24, 2021

The Kings play their first early Sunday game of the year today, taking on a flaming hot Steph Curry and a Warriors squad somewhere between championship contenders and young asset hoarders. If my tone and demeanor sound different today, it’s because I’m typing this between internet and power flutters and switching between my desktop and phone. I might have to actually go to this game if I want to watch it…. or just, you know, have consistent lighting for the day!

Speaking of the lights going off, did I say Steph Curry was in town and that he’s been shooting the lights out? I did. How long ago? I’ve only written a paragraph?! Goddamn it!

Let’s hurry up and talk Kings basketball!

When: Sunday, October 24nd, 6:00 PM PST

Where: Golden 1 Center, Sacramento, CA

TV: NBCSCA – Kyle Draper (play-by-play)

RadioKHTK Sports 1140 AM

For Your Consideration

Come Out to Play: So let’s start here by saying that Steph Curry is playing out of his mind to start this season and doing so against really decent competition. The story of the season has yet to be written, but getting a triple-double on opening night against a Lakers team that, between intrasquad boxing matches,  are supposed to be favorites in the West, is not an easy feat. To follow that performance up against a hobbled but dangerous Clippers squad with a 45 point, 10 rebound performance that included a 25 point first quarter explosion on a perfect 9-9 from the field? The guy has come out GUNNING for an MVP award in what may be the last few seasons of this core being a championship contender.

Enter… Davion Mitchell.

According to research done by our very own Tim Maxwell, when squaring up against Davion, Dame Lillard, CJ McCollum, Donovan Mitchell, Mike Conley and Jordan Clarkson shot 26.9% from the field in 27 attempts, 3/10 from deep, had three turnovers and drew a total of one foul. Obviously 75 possessions isn’t the largest of sample sizes and if anyone is going to cherry-pick or reach for stats, it would be our giraffe, but even so, this is mighty impressive for the guy’s first two games in the NBA. Davion’s not just stacking days at this point, the kid is stacking BODIES.

Every night is hell when it comes to guarding point guards in the NBA – rarely does a team in this league just not have a killer at point somewhere on their roster. Do I expect the same tonight against Stephen Curry, whose just as lethal working off the ball then he is handling? No, not really, but I also didn’t expect him to do what he’s done against the teams the Kings have already played. We’re in some uncharted territory here with Mitchell and for once, their is plenty to feel good about.

One match-up does not a game make. Fox and Haliburton have to find a way to play four quarters of good basketball on both ends of the court, something you can tell they’re trying to do and it just hasn’t all melded together yet. The referees have been struggling to start the season themselves, but Richaun Holmes has got to find a way to play 30 minutes plus a night for this Kings squad. James Wiseman still has a few more weeks of recovery with his knee, so Holmes won’t see a center taller than 6’9. If the Kings can hold Steph Curry under his season average of TEN REBOUNDS, Holmes should feast on the boards tonight.

It’s early in the season, it’s an early game and it’s the Warriors. We all know what has to be done and who needs to step up to make that happen. I’ll wax a bit more poetic the next time around if I can swim out of this Starbucks in time for the game!

Prediction

Steph Curry cools, De’Aaron Fox steams and Tyrese Haliburton cooks.

Kings: 122, Warriors: 117

It’s the Dubs that we face today;
They just beat both teams from LA.
Even if at our best,
We’ll be really hard-pressed
To keep Mr. Curry at bay!

For people attending the game….drive carefully in the rainy weather.

I actually went outside this morning to snap some pictures and videos because I can’t remember the last time it rained in October in California, lol. Much needed.

If they aren’t careful….they’ll certainly regret it. The roads are really water logged.

Hypothetical: Fox and Barnes to Boston for Tatum and Richardson.

Who likes it?

I don’t see Boston doing that deal. They give up in the best player in the trade by far.

KT literally just said Steph Curry is really starting to shine in his career. Game 2 and that could literally be the understatement of the season.

I’m here. Flooded roadways, bad driving, almost saw two pedestrians plowed into by a skidding car, and this is before the game is even starting. Too much excitement for this old heart.
