The NBA coaching carousel is in full swing, as Doc Rivers has agreed to become the new head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. After reporting that news, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Rivers could be looking to add Alvin Gentry to his staff.
The Athletic’s Jason Jones then chimed in that the Kings are also interested in Gentry.

Gentry would take over the lead assistant role left vacant when Igor Kokoskov left to take over as head coach of Fenerbahce.
Gentry is intriguing not just for his lengthy experience as both an assistant coach and a head coach, and not just for his history of playing uptempo basketball, but because having a prominent lead assistant could have eventual ramifications if Luke Walton were dismissed in the coming season. Adding Gentry to the bench could set the stage for him to assume head coaching duties down the line.
The Kings were interested in adding Gentry as an assistant in 2015, but Gentry was rumored to be uninterested in being seen as a head-coach-in-waiting at that time.
Just fire Walton, already. Jeez.

He might not be a top tier HC, but to say he isn’t class is pretty easy to disagree with. He’s shown a fair amount of class in just about every capacity of his career.

i doubt Gentry would want to take this job knowing Luke’s seat would be hot from day 1, why risk taking an unstable job knowing you might not be there the following season?
working alongside a freshly signed Doc Rivers knowing your job won’t be on the line sounds a lot more enticing then being a lead assistant for a lame duck coach.
For the Love of God, No. Gentry will be The head coach within a year. That would be a hideously bad decision. Gentry is a really nice guy. But, he has coached himself out of a lot of good gigs. Vivek is probably insinuating that once Walton fails, Gentry will take over. Please No!!

If this was Mcnair’s call to hire Gentry then I’m fine with it. If it was Vivek then screw this shit!
Anyways I don’t think Gentry takes the job knowing Luke’s situation with the Kings. If I were him, I would much rather go to Philly with Doc who just signed a 5 year deal. Much stable job knowing he would stick for the next 5 years compared to the Kings who he might just stick for a year unless Mcnair told him otherwise he would be the next coach if Luke does not meet the expectations. All in all Gentry is a class act and he wouldn’t probably do that to his friend Walton who both of them shared some time with the Warriors.
My opinion of Mcnair will be completely shot if this is his call. Especially, if the agreement is Gentry will be HC once he fires Luke. Gentry is a nice guy. But, Gentry as a head coach is a disaster. There is no questioning this fact. Gentry has been awful with all 4 of his head coaching opportunities in the NBA. The Man has a total of 3 winning seasons in 16 years with 4 teams. 3 Years with Detroit(2 Losing) 1 winning season.
3 Years with the Clips( 3 Losing Seasons) 5 Years with Phoenix(4 Losing) 1 Playoff Appearance and 5 years with the Pelicans(4 losing seasons) 1 playoff appearance.
I am baffled on how Gentry keeps getting HC opportunities. It’s astounding. He stinks. I don’t want this guy nowhere the team. Asst. Head Coach or not. It will give Vivek and/or Mcnair an excuse to hire this guy as a HC for the next 4 years.
Gentry is actually pretty good as an assistant but I agree that he is terrible as a HC. Whether its Mcnair or Vivek’s idea (I think its the latter).
I just don’t see Gentry to the Kings as a real option so its a meh for me.

Hiring Rivers won’t help the Sixers. That lineup will never get to the finals. Simmons can’t shoot, Tobias is overpaid, Horford is quickly aging, and Embiid should have played in the 90s. That’s 140 mil of their cap right there. They have very few assets outside of those 4 players. Firing Brett Brown and thinking Rivers is going to make a difference is hilarious. Siixers are a year or 3 away from a complete rebuild.
This is what happens when you let a superstar like Jimmy Butler walk without really putting up a fight. I think Redick was a pretty massive loss as well.
As would I, but that still doesn’t make Doc “get” for an org thinking they’re just a coach away from a title.
