Kings 2022 NBA Trade Deadline Preview, with Jerry Reynolds

This was a better podcast two days ago.
By and | 21 Comments | Feb 9, 2022

The Kings Herald Show returns with an unfortunate episode from the past. We recorded this one yesterday and before I could get the post up, the Kings traded Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Tristan Thompson to the Pacers for Domantas Sabonis, Jeremy Lamb, Justin Holiday, and a 2022 2nd round pick.

So if you miss Tyrese Haliburton today, we’re offering you the opportunity to live in that reality again. If you want to laugh at how wrong we were on some of this trade deadline stuff already, this is the podcast for you.

A slightly outdated Kings trade deadline preview:

TIMESTAMPS:
  • (2:00) Is there anything on the court worth talking about over the last two weeks of Kings games?
  • (4:15) Does Davion Mitchell’s strong play recently impact De’Aaron Fox trade conversations this week?
  • (6:20) The latest Kings trade rumors
  • (8:40) The Julius Randle conversation
  • (15:15) Is there any chance at all that the 76ers come back to the Kings with a Ben Simmons trade?
  • (23:10) Who stays? Who goes?
  • (108:00) Patreon Question of the Week

Just what are the short term and long term goals and are they congruent with each other. I personally think management is just scrambling around with no long term cohesive and sustainable plan. What’s the goal with the remaining 36 games. Do we focus on getting into a low level playoff spot with an early exit or do we use the games to further assess our young players. If it was me, I would move Lamb and Holiday immediately and not play anyone over 26 the rest of the season. I’d do everything possible between now and draft day to better position ourselves for the next draft. We better find some impact players soon to compliment Sabonis or in two years this trade will become a total disaster when Sabonis leaves and Haliburton is playing in an allstar game.

Hope Hali is an All Star but not holding my breath ! Do agree that with an All Star caliber player in the fold must surround him with players that fit and a creative coach ! Not holding my breath on that either !

I saw this when I got up, and thought, “Those bastards went and got together for an emergency podcast after the trade!”

Life will undermine you, not every time, but a lot of the time. Regardless, you guys could do an hour on what it takes to get Carl Landry back in 2009, and I’d still listen.

Hot take: Monte’s going to try to swing Barnes + Holmes + Bagley + picks for another star-caliber (or close) player, a la John Collins or Jerami Grant. Looks like the goal is to turn this band of misfit KANGZ into a true playoff-caliber team ASAP. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all, I actually expect something like this. Don’t think going for the playin/playoffs is very realistic, but I think this could set the team up for next season. They’ll have more assets, more trade options etc, Plus all the news guys would benefit from a training camp and possibly a new, hand-picked coach.

With Haliburton gone, I think Mitchell’s offensive numbers will decline. That’s not a knock on Davion – I think he’s a stud – it’s more of how Haliburton makes other players better, opens up the floor, and gets the ball moving. That’s what makes yesterday’s trade tough to swallow. However, it’s good to hear that all of you are placing a really high value on Domas. I’m excited to see him play. (Speculating that maybe he might help attract a good new coach to sign here??) The main variable I see with this roster going forward is what version of Fox develops. Can he make others better? Can he be two-way player? Can he play winning basketball?

Regardless of what’s coming back, trading arguably the best draft pick by the franchise in maybe 20+ years after only 18 months is borderline unacceptable. It’s easy to say it should have been Fox but obviously he’s not near the value of Haliburton and wouldn’t have yielded any all-star in a trade. Perhaps this is better for the makeup of the team but Haliburton was the first player I felt was a consistent star for this team in ages. We’ve had players like Cousins and Tyreke but they were sometimes hard to root for and inconsistency was overwhelming… when they left they were pedestrian immediately. Haliburton is a special kid AND a brilliant facilitating, hard working, charismatic 21 year old star. It stings 1000x more because he’s the first one we’ve drafted as our own in a long, long time.

“Regardless of what’s coming back…”

This is not an effective way to open a counterpoint.

“But what if it’s…?

“No.”

“Well, how about…?”

“NO.”

Have another 33-49 season then.

But sadly as jerry even stated it’s not like Hali was getting the franchise wins. I agree he was and is a great human and will hopefully be a great player. They had to change it because they have for years and years regardless of the GM tried to hang onto players based on, “what they could become” not what they are. Case in point is where they are at with fox now. Also why they did horrible deals for guys like buddy etc.

I argue Isaiah Thomas(Pick 60), Cousins(pick 5) (No matter the hate, he was a 3 time all star in Sacramento) and Kevin Martin(Pick 26) were better draft picks based on draft position and floor ability while with Kings.

This is subject to change based off career, but we have seen many players leave Sacramento to be better with more competent teams.

I am a loyal fan to my teams with the exception of the NBA, in which I go with my favorite player. When Haliburton joined the Kings last year I was smitten. He has a rare floor vision and makes everyone around him better. I’ve watched about 90 percent of the Kings’ games in the last two seasons. I commiserate with the fans about the outright corruption that occurred in the Lakers series all those years ago. Kings fans, I’ve learned, are a damaged group. I will always wish the best for the Kings. But I am not very hopeful. Good luck. Goodbye.

Hali was my favorite and I do believe he can become a top flight point guard but it is true that Sabonis is a top flight power forward now ! Key will be Fox not Sabonis as he has already proven to be the best player on several playoff teams ! Have doubts on that topic !

I just finished listening to this, I thank you for asking my question, and I’m grateful to Jerry for such a thoughtful and open answer. Everything he said certainly matched up with my own experience. I realized a long time ago that in any marriage where a man is marrying a woman, the man is marrying up. I sure as hell did.

Wasn’t really expecting praise on my posts, since my phrasing is, ah, different than Jerry’s, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy hearing it. A kiss on the head from the gods.

Looking forward to the post-deadline show!
