With Kevin Huerter sidelined due to a hamstring injury, it stood to reason that the Sacramento Kings’ offense, especially their three-point attack, would take a step back. But much like the rest of this magical Sacramento season, go ahead and throw reason out the window.
Though the start was slow, Sacramento found its groove early against the Washington Wizards, with the two teams trading buckets in a breakneck first half.
Playing big minutes with Huerter out and Kessler Edwards — making his first start in a Kings’ uniform — in early foul trouble, Terence Davis had himself a night, connecting on four three-pointers in the first half on his way to dropping 16 in the first 24 minutes. He would finish with 21 after having gone scoreless his previous three times out.
Though the Kings would ultimately live up to their billing as the league’s best offense, it was the Wizards who were lighting it up early. Behind Kyle Kuzma, D.C. jumped out to an early 10 point lead at 21-11. Kuzma, who finished his night with 33 points on 12-23 shooting (4-11 from 3), almost single-handedly kept the home team in the game, but was not enough to match the attack of the Kings, who saw six players drop double-digits, including Davis and Malik Monk (17) off the bench.
Shooting 60% from behind the arc as a team didn’t hurt, either, as the team broke its franchise record for made threes in a season in the first quarter when Keegan Murray drained a triple with just over four minutes remaining.
Sacramento turned a ten point deficit into a four point lead after one quarter, stretching its advantage to 11 at the half. This despite being downright awful from the free throw line, connecting on just three of their nine first half attempts.
The inability to take advantage from the charity stripe ultimately wouldn’t matter, as the Wizards had absolutely no answer for Davis or Domantas Sabonis. The Kings’ big man had 30 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds Saturday night, his 57th double-double of the season. He was only denied the opportunity to pursue his 12th triple double due to an apparent injury suffered to his left hand after taking a hard fall in the third quarter. Though he would return, he took a seat on the bench with several minutes remaining but with the game well in hand.
Though the Wizards hung around, the Kings were well in control by the third quarter, especially as Kuzma cooled off a bit. Bradley Beal had a strangely quiet 20 for the Wiz, and Corey Kispert chipped in 13. No other players scored in double-digits for the home team, who shot 45% from the field and 36% from three while allowing the Kings to shoot almost 56% from the field and 59.5% from deep.
It wasn’t the best defensive performance from Sacramento, but the home team’s effort was worse.
On a relatively quiet night for De’Aaron Fox, who scored 12 points and was 0-3 from the free throw line, Keegan Murray was big, dropping 19 including a 5-10 night from beyond the arc. He now stands just 21 makes away from setting the rookie record for three-pointers made in a season (Donovan Mitchell, 187), and he’s got 12 games to do it.
Washington played all 14 players, with every player that saw the court getting at least 6 minutes. Richaun Holmes, returning to the active roster after an illness, was the only King to not get any run, and 11 of the 13 players scored.
The Kings are now 8-2 in their last ten, have not lost on the road since the All Star break (7-0), and have secured their best record since 2005-06 — with a chance to cross the 50-win threshold for the first time since the ’04-’05 campaign.
The 132 points marked the 16th time the team had crossed the 130-point mark this season, adding to their legacy as the highest-rated offense in the NBA this season and keeping them in the lead for the all-time mark. It’s been a year of breaking records and lighting beams, and there was more of that Saturday in the nation’s capital.
With the win, and a loss by the Denver Nuggets, Sacramento is just three games back in the loss column for the No. 1 seed in the West. They hold on to the two seed thanks to the tie-breaker over the Grizzlies, who held off the Warriors earlier in the day.
Huerter’s time table to return is yet to be determined, and Sacramento was also without Trey Lyles in D.C. (right shoulder soreness). It is unknown at this time how much time Lyles is expected to miss or whether Sabonis’ hand injury will cost him any time.
Sacramento’s road trip will make its final stop in Salt Lake City, when they take on Utah Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
Really good to see the bench shows up………..
As we just cannot rely on the starters in every game…….
TD played great, and Davion locked up Beal………..
A great road win……..!
43 wins, guarenteed 3-1 road trip! Still 2nd in the West, and the Nuggets keep losing! I can not even believe that we have a realistic chance of being 1st in the West!

Lord of the Kings
&ct=g
They are making road victories a winning
hobbithabit. Every win is precious!Kings Win! Dance!
I think we’ve all been kind of waiting for the wheels to fall off but they’ve only been rolling faster. Never would I have thought we’d be 2nd in the west this far into the season, let alone potentially playing for 1st! There seems to be a decent gap between the top 3 and the rest of the west as well. Fitting we play the nuggies last game of the season too
Boring. I miss the days when every win came down to the last possession.
Ox deserves a full-body massage after carrying us all year long,!
What kind of dinosaur is that?
TD decided he was not throwing away his shot tonight!
I would like to see a photograph of Anthony Tolliver
OK, I was hoping for an assist, but I’ll go ahead and put it up myself

maybe it’s due to Wewi
(Wes Wilcox)
Yeah, Wilcox was a great AGM hire by someone.
Second best road record in the league… let that sink in. 7-0 since the break is nuts and the division race is basically over. That we even have an outside shot at the one seed is truly remarkable. Has any team ever gone from the 12th seed to the 1st seed in one season? It’s just such a massive jump it seems impossible.
Amen to that ????
Maybe the 2007-08 Boston Celtics, technically? Although they added Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen that off season….I wonder if it’s ever been done without adding a couple All Star/Superstars.
The Celtics had three guys who were all NBA prior to the 07-08 season. That’s kinda why Rob usually qualifies it with ‘has a team improved without acquiring superstar talent, gotten a David Robinson healthy’ and so forth.
This season for the Kings just doesn’t happen and is going to be discussed for quite awhile in how they pulled it off.
I was thinking perhaps the Spurs, the season after they tanked for Duncan, but they didn’t jump to 1st.
Boston went from a 24 win team in 06-07 to a 66 win team in 07-08. Of course, when you manage to acquire Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett (with a young Rajon Rondo and prime Paul Pierce), you should probably actually improve.
Good pull and that makes sense. Adding two stars definitely helps! Doing it while adding role players seems particularly improbable. With a little more time to think about it, this feels sort of like the Suns getting Chris Paul and Sabonis is our Chris Paul. Booker and Fox I think were both going into year 6 when they made their leaps as well.
That’s a good similar type story FKC. The other is Toronto in the 2013-14 season where they made a leap (particularly after trading Rudy Gay away). We just sometimes forget that part of it here, understandably.
Celtics went from 29 win team to 61 wins in 1980 . Only addition was Larry Bird .
He was alright. Or so the rumor has it.
Big jump and well deserved. Kings have been fortunate in that many teams that they have beat have had injuries to key layers or load management. But a win is a win and the best ability is availability.
In seasons passed, it’s always the Tank.
Now, we have a literal Tank in the name of Domantas F. Sabonis.
C’mon, Domas may be the most bruised, slapped, tackled player in the league, but the dude is just made of Titanium.
#LTFB
I’ve never been the biggest Terence Davis fan, but I have to give the guy his props for keeping himself ready & always answering the call. That’s not an easy gig, & Davis has handled it well.
Agreed. TD is a roll of the dice, but I have always appreciated his urgency and physicality, if not his efficacy.
It was nice to see the Kings roll on the road, despite missing 2 of their top 8, and their fourth city in seven nights, and Fox and Barnes making minimal contributions. This team is singing as the rest of the west cant remember the words to the song.
KEEGAN MURRAY. What is that kid going to be next season? 17pts 7 rebounds and 150 stocks? What about his peak? 25 points and 8 rebounds a game? I read so much about his limited ceiling last summer. To me, he has some serious Jamaal Wilkes vibes. Key player on championship team vibes.
Mike Brown continues to impress. He is not afraid to roll out some new lineups. Kessler Edwards is the umami for this recipe of a roster. Who knew a long, strong, athletic guy who could guard 2-4 would work so well? I feel like MB is tinkering with things with the playoffs in mind. This team is deep. I watched PHX yesterday, and their bench of Craig, Landale, Payne, Lee, Ross, who is stealing a game for them in a seven game series? None of those guys. They don’t have one Monk on that team, let alone a Lyles or TD.
While I still feel like Davion is underperforming, was that the loudest 6 point, 2 reb, 3 ast game in memory? His ability to impact a game without stat stuffing reminds me of what Michael Cooper did for the Showtime Lakers. Cooooooop was an all time great without the stats to back it up, and probably the OG 3 and D guy.
Who are the Kings supposed to be afraid of in the first round? Minny? The just lost their best player, their second best player has missed most of the season, and who exactly is going to stop our guards? Conley went to high school with El Ron. Not afraid. PHX? Their roster defines the word thin. Clips? They still can’t finish games and their big addition was the worst clutch player in the NBA. Morris plays major minutes for them. Enough said. Golden State? Good for them they have experience, where is it? They can’t close any game one the road, and who exactly is going to stop Fox/Monk? DDV? Without Wiggins, their team is just not capable of stopping Domas inside, and all of the weapons the Kings have at the wings and guards.
What a season. Every game I feel like I learn more about this coaching staff and roster. Kudo’s to Monte and his team. They really cooked up something tasty.
Two points I missed, as it is my third Saturday night in a row at home to watch the Kings, which typically is my night to indulge in food and drink, and I have to suffice with home cooking and bartending. Tonight the cocktail of choice was The Steadfast, a tasty riff on an old-fashioned, with two parts bourbon (Elijah Craig was what I used) to one part maraschino liquor (delightful), with several dashes of Peychaud’s bitters).
One: Domontas is a g-damn sledgehammer. What a waste those years in Indy were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole with Myles Turner. As Jerry so aptly put in another installment of the incredibly entertaining podcast, “you notice who other teams don’t piss off”. That man is a machine. Strength plus skill plus motor equals All NBA for him. G-Damn.
The second point is just how sustainable this all is. I keep listening to podcasts from noted NBA writers, talking about how the Kings are unproven in the playoffs, ignoring their 4th quarter prowess and consistently good play this season, whilst giving credit to “veteran” teams who have played mediocre basketball all season. This roster looks good, and there are zero bad contracts. There is room to re-sign Barnes and probably Lyles. TD’s minutes can be replaced cheaply with Keon and Kessler. Plenty of room to bring Sasha over. They have draft capital and the 12m contract of Holmes to fill whatever hole shows in the playoffs. This team is sustainable.
What. A. Season.
Rec’d for the cocktail recipe.
People forget that Sabonis, Huerter and Barnes have playoff experience . Should help !
Yeah Huerter in particular dominated a game 7 of a divisional round series! That’s definitely not nothing.
I always loved defensive guys like Cooper, Bobby Jones from the Sixers, Ben Wallace from the Pistons and Toney Allen from the Grizzlies.
Would love for Davion to be a bit more prolific offensively, but happy with his D.
Agree fully – and not to diminish Off Night but to add to his effect: Hello, Kessler Edwards. The KZ Okpala/ Chima Moneke/Matisse Thybulle SF defensive additive who in this case can also add some offense powder to his arsenal. The D with some 3. And I also appreciate how well #17 hits the boards.
Steadfast sounds like a winner- in between an Old Fashioned and a bit like a Boulevardier (A Negroni with whiskey in place of Gin).
Kings assured of less than 40 losses after hitting 50+ last season and too many seasons prior.
LIGHT THE BEAM!
Classic! The Boulevardier!
That is a potent cocktail
Another rif on the Negroni and Boulevardier that I like is the Campari Twilight; equal parts Campari, bourbon and triple sec with a dried orange slice as garnish.
I have never heard of that. Going to give that a try tonight. Thanks Rik.
Bobby Jones! He is one of my top seven favorite players of all time, along with Kareem (a personal idol and nominee for Most Interesting Athlete of All Time), Sidney Moncrief, Magic Johnson, Detlef Schremph, Dan Roundfield, and Larry Nance.
He is absolutely an all time great.
Too many Lakers on that list. 1 is too Many.
Detlef Schreph was good? I only know him from parks and rec – I thought it was a joke. I’ll have to check him out if there’s any tape
Got the chain last night.
I thought Davion’s defense was clutch last night. Someone better at finding the matchup stats may prove otherwise, but I thought he put the clamps on Beal. He posted a ridiculous +32 in just 19 minutes. His offense may never be there, but every team needs a bulldog defender on the perimeter like Davion. Much of what he does just doesn’t show up in the boxscore.
Well, there you go.
That is just nuts. Even if he never scored, you can justify playing him because he forces the opponent’s best player to work so hard to score. That pays off on the defensive end, too, since so much energy has to be expended while on offense.
Mitchell is supernatural in his ability to know where a ballhandler wants to go, and get there first. I don’t have another word for it.
I have always said Murray doesn’t get enough touches nightly. Got them last night and look what happened.
I love Keegan. However, he had 2 shots blocked at the rim. That can happen but it happens too often with him. Some offseason work, I assume.
While crediting Mike Brown, we should also credit the whole coaching staff he has assembled. I believe there is a lot of teaching going on, one-on-one work with individual players that is helping them to develop individual abilities and their grasp of team concepts—especially with such a young group.
I believe I saw that Beal was only 2-8 with 5 points when being guarded by Edwards. He really can defend at a pretty high level and he’s younger than Keegan!
So is this a post to show how great the Kings are, or how mediocre the west has become?
While the team is finding great success. There are emultiple roles and holes in this roster that need to be addressed. Excellence is a pursuit that never ends. May we be ever vigilant in that pursuit.
It’s crazy. You can tell how good a coach Mike Brown is when you can see actual growth from the team. Past teams that we have it was the same shit from game 1 to game 82. Same old excuses, same old “we got to be better.”
This year, I think this team today (game 69) would wipe the floor with our game 1-10 team. It wouldn’t even be close.
That is a great point Timmy. This team keeps getting better.
Case in point the offense: The Kings weren’t scoring at a historical level by January 1st, but it’s certainly not the ‘newsworthy’ item that it was when the Celtics were doing it. /cazm
Since January 1 though? One of the greatest offenses ever, regardless of era.
TD has come up big on more than one occasion- just seems to rise to the situation.
That Beam is out there. It cannot be bargained with, it cannot be reasoned with, it doesn’t feel pity or remorse or fear and it absolutely will not stop, ever, until it is lit.
I love the Kings! This season may be the one where we can go all the way, barring injuries. Thr only teams in the West that can beat us in the playoffs are the Clippers, the Suns w/ KD and the Nuggets and let me tell you, it ain’t an easy out for any of those teams either.
The Kings are DAWGZ. They’re going to fight tooth and nail til the buzzer.
Light The Beam baby!!!
7 road wins in a row! It really is a brand new day for Kings b-ball
Winning seven games in less than three months is a brand new day for Kings b-ball.
The “next man up” mentality with this team is so fuggin’ amazing. It’s so evident that every single player on this squad is so team-first focused that fellas are slipping into roles when given the opportunity. Absolutely love it.
Yep. I also love how you don’t have anyone complaining about their minutes or whether they don’t play or not. The most recent episode of “The Run” on Youtube showed how Richaun Holmes got his first start of the season, despite not being part of the rotation pretty much all year and barely playing. He came in and played well, and got the DPOG chain. No drama about playing time, starting versus coming off the bench, or anything else (ugh, remember going through Buddy complaining about starting and coming off the bench?).
Even a guy like Dellavedova who never really plays in games, I feel like having a vet like him around for practice and stuff has a good affect on the guys too.
The guys are all in for whatever is good for the team, and I love it.
Well said Kevin
Or, with a nod to your screen name, “next hand up” in Domas’ case.
All rise the hot hand.
All hands on deck!
I really think “Rise the hot hand” is my favorite post in Kings history.
Was that Cowboy Ron?
Yes it was.
Winning road records in the Sac era:
22-19 (55-27 overall record) in 2000-01
25-16 (61-21 overall record; also winningest team in franchise history) in 2001-02
24-17 (59-23) in 2002-03
21-20 (55-27) in 2003-04
20-21 (50-32) in 2004-05
That’s it. The only 5 seasons in the Sac era (outside of this one) that have had 20+ Wins on the road in any season.
The most they had in any season during this decade and half playoff-less drought was 15 wins on the road done multiple times.

A nice articles about the Kings on Bullets Forever, the SBNation Wizards site:
The Kings have left the Wizards in the dust – Bullets Forever
Highly recommended. Also, the last line left me bewildered and smirking in equal parts.
Sacramento being a beacon of hope for other teams is a strange phenomenon. Many have seen the glory of the Beam and have gained inspiration to light their own path to greatness
Good find Rik, thanks.
Nice article, thanks Rik. Good read as are the comments, where Coach Brown, SVG and Mark Jackson are discussed.
Thank fuck Domantas Sabonis isn´t human. Had I taken all the hits he´s endured over the last 5 months, I´d be dead.
Some guys are just built/born different. That’s not to take anything away from the work Sabonis puts in to ensure his body can take a beating but dude was simply born with superior physical genetics, similar to Lebron. Physical specimens to say the least.
I am convinced Lebron was the government’s attempt to create a super soldier.
You’re probably right. Had they been able to give him a brain, then he’d probably be leading a group of navy seals on top secret missions. But instead we have him playing basketball.
No one could be as good as LeBron without being hugely smart as well as physically gifted (and working incredibly hard to develop those gifts). For talent without smarts/commitment see Tyrus Thomas.
For TT stuffing an LBJ shot see https://kingsherald.com/articles/kings-132-wizards-118-td-goes-off-in-dc-as-sacramento-wins-seventh-straight-on-the-road/#comment-153160.
Oops, sorry. See https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T8UAu4nf9vs.
There are varying levels of stupid.
(hears a mirror laughing)
Smacks of…
Well, something.
Lebron is an exceptionally bright person, on and off the court. What a shame that he never took the opportunity to lead Americans to their deaths.
Ok- it’s a rainy Sunday around the House of Flatus and a day off from Beam lighting- what do you all say to a little conspiracy theory?
Let’s just go with the current Kings running through these last dozen regular season contests and up with a Top 2 or Top 3 rank on the Western Conf playoff ladder. They hit the post season as the West’s hottest team.
Here’s my too far in the future “hot take”:
At sone point they face either/and Lakers and Warriors.
What ever playoff round that is – 1st, 2nd, WCF- It’s just too much a 2002 vibe for me to ignore. The refereeing this season has been mostly abominable, as it appears random as ever. Makes me hopeful for the match up challenge and worried enough about the Bevetta-ness the Kings might face (down to Steph elbowing De’Aaron’s nose). I can’t imagine, with a new TV contract coming up, that the NBA, NBPA, and Disney/ESPN would allow Sacramento to advance past their darlings.
Not sayin’, just sayin’
And make Sunday, a fun day.
I don’t think there is any conspiracy to help the Lakers or Warriors win, but I do think I don’t want the Kings playing either of them in the first round. Both of those teams are playoff tested and if healthy provide a lot of problems for the Kings. I also don’t want to deal with their obnoxious fans in Golden One’s first playoff series. I’d prefer any other team in the West for a first round matchup for this Kings team.
totally agree. Although it would be sweet to eliminate either, the risk is too high this year.
With the Kings having home court, the Warriors would be in trouble.
I fear Golden One would be a second home court for them, but I fear a 100% healthy squad of theirs more. Their traditional starting 5 of Curry, Klay, Wiggins, Green, and Looney has played in just 27 games together. For reference the Kings starting 5 have played in 55 games together, which is most in the NBA.
Also, the second best starting 5 in games played together in the West is Denver at 35. The Kings have had the best injury luck in the league by a wide margin.
duds could end up at 7. Fakers at 11. or both make the play-in in some random order and have to play each other. The ultimate hate game.
I do not want Kings at 3 and duds at 6. Duds at 5 to play Suns would be cool as would duds at 7.
Just tired of both their entitlements and antics.
Klank holding up his 4 crooked fingers to that evil Dillon Brooks was pathetic. Like Val Kilmer saying “I used to be cute”
This move was ridiculous.
I feel he’s learned that slow euro move from Barnes. The Fox of previous years just used his speed to get to the rim. The dude has mastered the changeup.
well put- he’s still got the speed but he only uses the flash some of the time, craftiness the rest. Playing like the veteran All-Star he’s become.
Add 5% to his 3PG% and we are fighting over who the Top 5 guards in The Association are. Could debate it now (Top 10) but no debate if he stretches defenses out to the 23 foot line.
And yes – the defense IS better too.
The Jerry West Trophy should be his this season as well.
One heckuva year for ????
Add 5% to his 3pt% and you are arguing if he’s a top 5 player in the NBA, not a top 5 G.
Perhaps.
He’s listed at 33.1% on 3FG and 76.9% FT.
40% is the magic number > 80% from the charity stripe.
And he’s still from Sac.
Steph, Luka, Dame, Ja and Kyrie are all 1st name basis established stars. There’s also Jrue, Shai and Trae and throw in CP3. Some would expect Donovan Mitchell in there too with Harden and the wonderful Tyrese Halliburton. That’s 11.
He’s in the discussion now; better shooting should propel him up – but would it or are those guys entrenched?
Making noise in the playoffs will go further in granting respectability than numbers. That’s the real missing piece.
I think he can and will do that. But it hasn’t happen yet. Soon.
Not arguing name recognition. I get that point. But if he starts increasing his shooting %’s (and stops clanking all these FT’s like he has recently), then yes, he’s a top 5 PG. Simply put, none of those guys defend any of the guys he does.
Having said all that, I don’t care about outside respect.
This i agree with. His elevating his game and this team in the playoffs will change everything regarding the narrative around De’Aaron.
I feel like when the whole world gets to see our full team in action in the playoffs it will change a lot of narratives in sac. I’m so excited for playoff crunch time fox. I feel like he’s going to take another big step in the post season
One thing that people outside probably don’t look at is his 4th quarter prowess… we know he is leading in clutch plays etc; however he defense gets better and I bet his shooting and free throw shooting improves in the 4th…. A lot of players get worse in Q4…
That’s beautifully apt. There are a lot of pitchers nowadays who can throw 100mph, but major league hitters will eventually time it out. If you don’t have some off-speed stuff, you’re going to get rocked.
Gotta take advantage of the injuries for tomorrow.
It used to be teams sat guys against us because it was probably a win with or without them. Now teams are sitting guys against us because it’s probably a loss with or without them.
now it’s fear/
M Night Shyamalan couldn’t have made this surprising of a twist lol
“I see injured people.”
I often figured, with my luck, if I was Cole Sear, my Sixth Sense would be
“I smell dead people”
Good to see TD get some real minutes and get hot before the playoffs.
