Kings 118, Warriors 99: Live to Light (The Beam) Another Day

Your Sacramento Kings went into San Francisco and forced a Game 7 in Sacramento.
By | 158 Comments | Apr 28, 2023

Apr 28, 2023; San Francisco, California, USA; Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes (40) dunks the ball in front of Golden State Warriors forward Kevon Looney (5) in the first quarter during game six of the 2023 NBA playoffs at the Chase Center. Mandatory Credit: Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

With their backs against the wall in a win-or-go-home Game 6, your Sacramento Kings went into San Francisco and controlled the game from start to finish, winning 118-99 and forcing Game 7 at home in Sacramento on Sunday.

It was an incredibly competitive game, with the officials facotoring heavily into the game. I hate to dwell on the refs, especially in a win, but the national broadcast was openly calling out how lopsided the officiating was tonight, and yet the Kings persevered despite playing most of the game 5-on-8. The Kings ended up shooting 25 free throws to the Warriors’ 35, with both Terence Davis and Domantas Sabonis fouling out of the game.

Your heroes of the night were the Kentucky Wildcats. De’Aaron Fox finished with 26 points, 11 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals, despite clearly still suffering with his injured finger. Malik Monk was once again huge off the bench, finishing with a team-high 28 points, to go along with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Trey Lyles was also big off the bench, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Lyles’ minutes largely came at center, with Mike Brown going with a super-small lineup for looooooong stretches of this game, to great success. The smaller lineup was able to switch effectively, played incredible defense, and flummoxed the Warriors throughout the game.

Keegan Murray had another solid outing, finishing with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 assists. It wasn’t his most efficient outing, shooting 5-17 overall and 4-13 from deep, but he played a really good game overall and I appreciated his aggression even when he missed shots.

Kevin Huerter finally found his groove late in the game. After a very slow start, it seemed odd when Brown turned to Huerter when Terence Davis fouled out. But Huerter got hot at the ideal time, and finished with 12 points, 11 of which came in the second half.

The Kings played far from a perfect game, and yet they went on the road and beat the defending champs in a do-or-die game. Your Beam Team stepped up when it mattered and defied expectations yet again.

Game 7 is Sunday.

Let’s go.

I like our chances at home! If Barnes, Huerter, and Murray all show up at the same time, I think we’ll smoke ’em.

My guess is Coach Brown was just riding the hot lineup. The small-ball with Lyles at 5 and TD + Monk + Fox + Murray was doing well and controlling the pace. The Warriors didn’t have a good counter for it, so he just stuck with it and it paid off. No knock on Barnes, IMHO.

I think this was huge for Keegan. He wasn’t shooting great, but stayed on the floor and held his own. When Keegan is feeling confident, he’s a real difference-maker, and Brown just gave him a huge vote of confidence at exactly the right time.

He did go down on a very minimal contact foul, but Draymond sort of tripped over him. Harrison was grabbing his knee? Or Groin? It was hard to tell.

my theory is it was because of matchups. Trey and Keegan over HB because of rebounding. Huerter and Keegan over HB because of shooting. TD to guard Steph. and then Fox and Monk. HB might get more minutes in game 7 depending on how things go. He’s ready.

Here’s the thing about our tweaks we made this game: When we go small ball, we have more skill out on the court than they do. It’s been counter intuitive because Alex Len has played well in the short spell of minutes he’s been given. More effective than Sabonis most games. But going to Lyles as our 5, creates a situation where you really can’t sag off anybody. Love it! Even if we somehow lose game 7, which I don’t think we will, this season has been an unbelievable success!

Lyles at the 5 helped open the floor up even more for Fox and Monk to operate and just routinely blow past any Warriors defender. I have no doubt that all that floor space and the pace overall, really wore the Warriors down as the game went on. They looked on their last legs by the end of the 3rd and I kept waiting for that one big run by the defending champs in the 4th to put the pressure back on the Kings, but it never came. They were gassed

Brown decided the Kings just needed to bring out all the long guns and fire away, and it worked. Playing paint/post ball is what the Warriors want, clearly. That plays into the Draymond and Looney’s hands, and they’ve been killing the Kings all series. Going small and fast and letting our guards run the offense forces the Warriors to chase the Kings constantly, and in the 4th quarter it made the difference.

+1: Domantas is basically a decoy on offense right now, and that’s perfectly fine. If he dribbles the ball off his knee or someone else’s foot one more time, though, he should just be benched, period. The team was significantly better tonight when he was off the floor. He’s a great player, but this matchup is his kryptonite.

Domas just has to limit his turnovers. He can do that. That corner three swish was nice. The Kings can space the floor with him.

Love TD but too many bad decisions and streaky inconsistency. He leaves his feet every time trying to block shooters far away from the basket who are going to pump fake and draw fouls. Bad habits that lead to turnovers and lost opportunities.

Again, as I have said in the comments on the recap of the last game, LET’S KEEP THE F*CKING JETS ON. Sched not getting easier for the Warriors as Game 7 is less than 48 hours away. Push it hard until Curry, Klay, Green and Wiggs beg for rest.

Warriors looked really gassed here and lets keep it that way.

And on a final note, eat that Magic Johnson.

This just seemed much more like the team we’ve been watching all year. I’m thankful that Fox has stepped it up in the post-season; but I feel like the team looks too much to Fox and the Ox to be the hero.
With fox minding his finger and Domas on the bench, we saw the KINGS play tonight – and not just a few guys watching their all-stars.

Game 7 at Golden1. This has been a fantastic season and a great group to root for. Let’s get 1 more against the Warriors!

Sabonis looked really bad tonight. Too many dribbles in the paint leads to being stripped. Just go up when you get the ball before the small guys come and swipe!

Nice to see Huerter come back in late and hit some huge shots.

Monk and Fox put so much pressure on the defense in the paint. Lyles pulls Looney and Greenbout a bit which creates space.

Go get em in game 7!!!

The defense is collapsing on Domas, giving him no space to operate. It must be exhausting; Looney and Green are beasts. And they are stopping the dribble handoffs. With that the Kings needed to get creative and get downhill, which Malik and De’Aaron did.

Signature win for the Kings. This has been an all-time great first round series. So glad that Brown mixed it up and went small. Finally tried some adjustments that clearly worked. It was ugly at times, but when the Kings are flying on defense, getting deflections, and Lyles is contributing offensively, we are much tougher. But Monk was in video game mode, he and Fox willed our offense over the top. And Fox was absolutely correct in his post-game comments. It has to start on defensive end; they really got into the Warriors chests and had the better energy. The Warriors looked flummoxed and tired from the chaotic swarm of D. BIG CONGRATS to the Kings on digging deep and pulling out the W. And amazingly, Sabonis still has not had showed his all-star form. He’ll get another chance Sunday. I expect the Kings fans to be a force to reckon with.

I would really like to see Mike Brown walk over to the Warriors huddle and listen in on a play call, or heck, even draw up a silly play for them to run. Maybe the Dumbs won’t even notice!

Give it a shot, coach! 😛

I’m just stunned sitting here smiling from ear to ear. I saw somebody mention this on Twitter but is this the most impressive Kings win ever? With these stakes, with this team, against the defending champs, they just controlled the entire game.

I’ve been yelling at the TV all series. Don’t let Loony sag, make him pay. Sabonis doesn’t shoot wide open mid range shots. When the Kings went small, Loony had to come out and everything opened up. Sabonis has to shoot and make his open shots, which he can do, or Mike has to go to that small lineup again.

It also tired Looney out big time. He was cooked by the end of the 3rd and the Kings kept hunting him on switches

The refs sucks…
comment image

This play after Fox scored, and Curry stepped out of bound, with one leg in the court….
and he then passed the ball to Looney….isn’t that a violation ?

I mean, the refs called violation on the Kings last game when Len did almost exact same thing

Yup, missed call.

Weirdly, I just watched a Shaqtin episode about this very thing! 10 min of inbound violations. Damn, would’ve been nice to have that called at Chase with the home crowd.

It seems like the refs are fine w/1 leg in the court. I frequently see 1 leg in the court. However, having 1 leg in the court & 1 on the line will apparently be called.

This series is an absolute juggernaut match! It has lived up to its hype. Critics being silenced on both sides. Coaches making chess moves. Both teams getting back up after knockdowns. The defending champ vs the people’s champs. The Golden Gate Bridge vs the red bridge in San Francisco. Game 7, let’s go!

Wire to Wire Win.

I feel badly the officials will be losing sleep tonight- but they were embarrassing.

To me, the big winner was rebounding. The loser, again, was turnovers (and not turnovers AND shooting – The 38% from 3 (17/45) is pretty darn decent, just turnovers).

Now – let’s see what Sunday brings. I have a seat and would like to float home with thoughts of the 2nd round. I promise, the Warriors are going to play better.

The officiating in this game was absolutely atrocious. Sabonis not even getting a call when he’s got a massive black eye is laughable. Being in the Bay, I’ve got Warrior fan friends complaining about the officiating in a game they shot 10 more free throws and got dominated on the boards and in the paint. How the hell does that track? Sabonis drew ZERO fouls! How is that even possible?

The blood/black eye reminds me a bit of Steve Nash 2007 (vs. Spurs) with his bloodied nose and gash above his brow.

And Mike Bibby’s nose getting the Kobe elbow foul

Domas must be made of Oak. His grit and toughness represents this team well and is an inspiration to his teammates and us fans (well, me anyway).

The Kings have strong leadership with Sabonis, Fox, Barnes with super support from Monk, Mitchell, Lyles and Len.

Warriors shot 10 more free throws because they were fouled alot more. The one egregious play doesn’t account for the difference. Kings need to do a better job of defending without fouling, and fouling with purpose. The absurd “continuation” fouls now in vogue are fodder for Curry and Thompson to release the ball the split second they are touched.

R-man
April 29, 2023 8:21 pm

You’ve got to be kidding me. I know I am a diehard fan, but we were driving to the basket more, and Domas was a rebounding machine, and yet the Warriors, shooting threes, had 10 more free-throw attempts and Sabonis drew 0 fouls, while fouling out early with a black eye.

Domas was called for a moving screen. Green sets the same moving screen and isn’t called. Fox is given a technical for talking back to the refs. Draymond does the same thing, no foul. And don’t get me started on Curry. He pushes off on almost every outside shot, initiates all the contact and then throws his hand’s up and gets the call every time. So, no, the Kings have not been fouling more.

Um, yeah, no. The Kings were getting HAMMERED on the way to the basket constantly and were getting nothing. That makes very little sense considering they were driving substantially more all night. Sabonis is covered in scratch’s with a massive black eye and I repeat, DREW ZERO FOULS. The Warrior fan delusion is truly remarkable.

Just a tremendous wire to wire performance by the Kings. Well almost. The Warriors had a few leads but nothing substantial.

Tonight the Kings looked like a basketball team, strong defensively, moving without the ball, Fox looking to distribute. We finally saw the team we’ve been expecting to see.

Sabonis getting his 5th foul actually helped the Kings, sad to say. Brown stuck with Huerter, 0-6 at one point, and got rewarded. Terrance Davis played tenacious defense, without having to worry about fouls. I thought Fox had his best game of the series, he made good decisions with the ball, and, after some early turnovers, finished with 10 assists.

If the Kings play with patience on Sunday, we win. I’m hoping that Sabonis will finally be a difference maker.

It would be wild if Brown took a page from Kerr and, in anticipation of their adjustments, started Monk and Lyles over Red Velvet and Sabonis in Game 7. Shake ’em up. Then a totally new second unit of Mitchell, Davis at 2, Velvet at 3, Metu and Sabonis. Never happen, but it would be wild.

I actually like that Brown sticks with his starters, but isn’t afraid to mix up the minute allocations.
When you put in different starters, the opposing coaches know your adjustments straight away. This way, you keep ‘m guessing.

I guess I see that point — I mean, yeah they know your starters, but the varying minute allocations still apply no matter who starts, so they still wouldn’t know the full adjustments, right? The Kings seemed to find their defensive mojo w/the small, athletic lineups, all the deflections, etc. And they ran much better than w/Sabonis and Velvet (who were passing too much in clogged lanes).

Like I said, I know it won’t happen, but I kind of wish he had tried it earlier, in game four or something.

Normally I wouldn’t question leaving the starters as is, but considering how god-awful Huerter has been on offense this entire series and how much they’ve taken Sabonis out of his facilitator role (and his rebounding) and both have struggled at times on D– I just wonder how that small lineup would fare starting out a game, whether they could establish fast pace easier, open up a big lead, etc..

I suppose the main concern would be losing the scoring punch off the bench. You would need Mitchell and TD to shoot well, and prob have either Murray or Barnes w/second unit some more. Anyway. It’s just funny that the first major adjustment he makes and we have one of best Kings victories since they moved to Sac/in a very tough place to win. A convincing beat down, as Jalen Rose was saying.

Good points, but I think sticking with Keegan as a starter paid dividends for Brown and I assume he will take the same approach with Sabonis and Huerter (who also happend to have a few huge 3s down the stretch last night) .

Definitely agree on Keegs. He’s done more than enough now as a rookie to earn his starter minutes in this series, I think. And he’s trying hard to impact the game in other ways when not scoring. Those boards last night were great. I can’t believe just a year ago, I was watching my Richmond Spiders (bout a block away) play Keegan during March Madness. Or that there will be an identical Murray twin in the league next year. Last night I wore my Hail Murray t-shirt under an old gold Kings jersey from the golden years that reads Couch Mob on the back.

Talking about Keegan, MB said he was concerned not just with this one game but also with his learning and gaining confidence over his career. The same holds for Huerter, who is only 24. Brown wants to develop these players (with inevitable additions) into a championship squad. He knows what he is doing.

Apologies for my long response here, but I’m so excited for tomorrow, its hard not to dwell in Kings mania (and Im on East Coast, so nobody to talk to here about Kings). I just watched Barkley on Inside NBA predict the Kings were going to Conference Finals tho.

Anyway, yes, I’m sure our Coach of the Year knows what he’s doing — but the name of the game in playoffs is not “as long as we can get some experience for our struggling young guys.” Kerr’s a great coach too and the Warriors obviously are an experienced dynasty. I’m sure both coaches know the playoffs is about match-ups and which team can better dictate the style, often through better energy on defense, in transition, and best strategic adjustments.(Credit to Green for embracing coming off the bench vs. Kings, he understood as he said, “if it ain’t broken, etc”).

While part of me loves Monk as a super spark off the bench, which has been key to our success — my thinking is that sooner or later, MB needs to try him as starter in the playoffs unless Huerter drastically improves key stats. How long do we let him try to play through his struggles in the playoffs? Red Velvet would still get plenty minutes of post-season experience, but instead of 30 min average, I would drop him to around 20-23 (unless of course, he’s on fire .. and give some of those minutes to T.D. or Kessler if needing a defensive specialist).

We all know Looney has been a nightmare for Sabonis, he hangs over top of him like a bad suit, doesn’t go for his fakes, and has dominated the boards over the #1 rebounder in the NBA … And let’s face it, Huerter started the season like a stud (he even had KD in awe of his 3-pt shooting % back then). But he hasn’t been the same player the second half of the season. He still contributes through a decent midrange game and he’s OK on defense.. but he’s no facilitator – he’s had 6 assists this entire series (while making only 7 of 28 from three) so he’s literally been an offensive black hole .. Monk has had 19 assists and several huge offensive games. He makes others better.

Just think about how well Malik works the roll w/Sabonis (reminds me of Halliburton but where Halli always lobbed, Monk likes the slick drop-off a la CP3), he might quickly improve Sabonis’ numbers in the paint and get him starting games better, as well putting pressure on Warriors bigs, getting them in foul trouble; I think when Sabonis gets flustered on offensive side, it has effects across his whole game, and hurts the Kings offensive flow — you can see his tentativeness.

So while I wouldn’t take Sabonis out of the starting lineup, Monk and Fox would embrace starting together and if – as MB repeatedly says, its all about pace, pace, pace — when the Kentucky bros are out there, the Kings are faster and more athletic, wearing out the older Warriors, getting assists/getting to the line/getting Warriors in foul trouble. And unlike Huerter, Monk makes his FTs.

I’m sure that MB likes having the aggressive scoring punch of Monk w/second unit and even more down the closing stretch of games, where Malik is our only other player besides Fox who can reliably get to the rim or usually get his shot anytime (maybe Coach doesn’t want Malik to risk early foul trouble) .. But I like a second unit of Mitchell, Velvet and Lyles. He can improve his stats from second unit as well.

Regardless: I can’t wait to see what MB does in game 7 … if he essentially goes w/last game template or tries something totally new. …. If we make it through this tomorrow into (LORD WILLING) a matchup w/the Fakers, I will flip my lid.

Then I might start lobbying for Richaun to get some minutes. Think about all the hard work he put in for Kings. Think about the big game he had a few months ago, when he was called on. He deserves some playoff chances too, when the matchup is right.

The Warriors have all the pressure on Sunday.

Losing in the first round after winning a ring to a team that hasn’t been in the playoffs in 16 years?

Kerr heading into the last year of his contract.

Myers contract expiring.

Poole getting paid like he is Curry lite and he is Jordan Clarkson lite.

Draymond able to opt out.

Klay wanting an extension when he is on a decline.

Wiseman traded, and Kuminga and Moody being mid at best.

The Dubs are tired, and showing their age.

The Kings are relentless, and have been all year long. They are going to go full tilt on Sunday and I do not think the Dubs are up to the task.

Coach of the Year Mike Brown another 3 seasons

Monte McNair (? Exec of the Year?) another 3 seasons

De’Aaron Fox another 3 seasons (at $32M per)

Keegan Murray another 3 seasons (at $9M per)
Davion Mitchell another 2 seasons (at $4M per)

Domas and Monk another season

And though I don’t care about the Warriors woes – they get deep respect from me for being a dynasty with 6 Finals appearances and 4 rings and having at least 4 Future HoFers and two of the best shooters the game has ever seen, one certainly the best – I agree with this:

The Dubs are tired, and showing their age.

The Kings are relentless, and have been all year long. They are going to go full tilt on Sunday and I do not think the Dubs are up to the task.

Defense.

I love how the Kings were knocking Warriors players about. You know you’re going to lose the battle of the whistles anyway; so you may as well let them feel it and not let them get a shot off. I am actually happy when I see a couple of dudes foul out.It seemed like every few possessions, the Kings were getting a block or tipping a pass. Turned into a couple of easy buckets and saved a few easy ones as well.TD and Monk and even Lyles to a more limited extent bring a level of athleticism that is tough to top by anyone else in this series. Monk’s ability to hang and hit a layup after an adjustment really stifles Golden State.Domas: “So ref, you know how you tossed the ball up and you were only about 12 inches away from us and the other guy put his elbow into my face? So you didn’t see that? You don’t think it was a foul?”

Domas: broken thumb, smashed sternum, kick to the chin, black eye – but somehow he’s the dirty player?
Reminds me of the old Looney Tunes boxing match with Daffy and Elmer Fudd. ‘I don’t want to see none of this; or this; and none of that; and definitely none of these.

Second, so glad Mike Brown finally switched up the defensive game plan and didn’t guard looney and dray so far out and even went small ball for long stretches.

Third, I told you so feels sweet robhess and rockbottom. Glad my coaching eye strikes true and it hit ????

Using Lyles was great, but also want to see Sabonis hit that elbow jumper to stretch their defense. Get to the rim or get to the free throw line to watch that ball go in and hopefully the Kings shooting from 3 will be there on Sunday.
