Kings 113, Rockets 103: Sweeping in Houston

The Kings won their third straight and completed the season sweep of the Rockets despite an injury to Domantas Sabonis.

The Sacramento Kings completed a season sweep of the Houston Rockets on Saturday night with a 113-103 victory in Texas. Six Kings scored in double figures. Zach LaVine led the way with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 dimes, while DeMar DeRozan had 21 points and 6 assists. But it was the contribution off the bench from both Keon Ellis (12 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals) and Jonas Valančiūnas (15 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks) that set the tone for Sacramento early and throughout the contest. Keegan Murray added 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Malik Monk had 16 points and 4 assists.

All-Star Alperen Sengun had 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists to lead the way for the Rockets, and Jalen Green had 24 points. It was the Rockets veterans who let their young core down tonight; in his first game in a month since suffering an ankle injury, Fred VanVleet had just 3 points and 5 assists. Dillon Brooks had 12 points on 4 of 13 shooting, but his most effective moment of the game came when he earned both himself and somehow DeMar technical fouls for pushing DeRozan with 8 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. After that double-technical, DeRozan scored 11 of his 21 points and the Kings never trailed again.

Domantas Sabonis suffered a hamstring injury just a minute into the game as he grabbed at his left leg while running down the court. He was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game and the Kings have not yet announced the severity of the injury. In his absence, Coach Doug Christie relied on Valančiūnas, who had his best game as a King, and played multiple small-ball lineups with Trey Lyles and even DeRozan and Jake LaRavia guarding Sengun in spots. Sacramento’s bench responded to their star center’s injury by outscoring Houston’s reserves 42 to 28.

This Rockets team seemed on paper like a squad that should give the Kings troubles all season – instead, Sacramento has earned three strong end-to-end victories over Houston. With the victory, Sacramento moved up to 8th in the Western Conference Playoff hunt. They next head to Dallas to take on the Mavericks on Monday.

I have to say, I’m a bit miffed at the Kings training staff. We all saw Domas grab his hamstring in the Utah game, so we know it was bothering him then. He then comes out in the Houston game and injures it worse in the first 90 seconds, potentially sidelining him for an extended amount of time.

To be fair, Domas is the Ox, and rarely misses time so I could see certain injuries here and there maybe not showing huge red flags for him or the team? Hammys are an ugly thing to deal with though so hopefully it’s not too bad for the big guy

It is because they had no choice for two years. The training staff does not decide if Sabonis plays or does not play.

This team won and had a great big step up on very short notice.

it feels like the team is starting to gel a bit… we still need a Guy like Jabari Smith Jr or Eason on the kings.. imagine a starting lineup of Monk/Lavine/keegan/Domas and Smith/eason it would look pretty strong.

Maybe the most fun game this season for me. Defense stepped up in a big way. The bench did its job. Offensive load was spread well, which kept the Rockets guessing on whom to cover.

As a fan I found it absolutely delightful to watch. Not being able to predict that a single player was going to win or lose this game was awesome.

That was a delight to watch. A very thoughtful game plan, well executed by the players, with energy and effort from start to finish.

Who knew competence could be so titillating.

JV is not a springy shot blocker, but he very much has an Unseld-ian it’s-a-twelve-dollar-uber-ride-to-get-around-him-ness that he uses well and doesn’t get caught out of position much.

I think the Kings did a great job of limiting the Rockets ability to push and get easy points. JV is a Mack train under the offensive glass, and Keegan, Trey, and Jake crashed hard all night, slowing the Rockets ability to make a quick outlet, and the Kings were quick to get back as well.

I forgot to S/O Jake and Trey in my comment so glad you did it here. Trey has missed a couple games as the froncourt has gotten more crowded, but he stayed ready and had a great game playing out of position.

What a turnaround from those first few games of the Lavine era. Team was pushing the pace, playing good defense, and rebounding collectively.

The Kings now have a respectable amount of size, depth, diverse scoring, and balance of defense/offense. Domas went down in the first minute and I still felt the team had a strong chance of winning- unbelievable! Shoutout to JV.

Keon is also the man. The pump fake, spin on the pivot foot into the reverse lay along the baseline was NASTY. He isn’t just a C&S guy, folks, and the post Fox era has been giving him chances to expand his offensive horizons. He has really risen to every possible task. If this team wins a series in the postseason, it will be because of Keon and Keegan.

Speaking of, Keegan has also been more aggressive in searching for his shot. Attacking the rim with abandon at times. Love seeing him spread his wings in Fox’s absence. Defense and rebounding has become a consistent thing, and now he’s doing more on offense.

It’s not the team I envisioned when they lost to the Pels last year, but it seems to be working. It has been ugly at times but they have been winning games. Their best days seem to be ahead. Need to keep it up and another great test tonight with the Mavs.

That can be addition by subtraction — if you’re giving some of Fox’s 19 shots/game to Murray and Ellis, and all of Lavine, Murray and Ellis are better at shooting the 3, you can let DDR and Sabonis play in the lane, taking high % 2’s, while getting more efficient scoring from your wings.

Having an offensive game plan focused on four or five players scoring instead of pumping Fox’s stats is winning games.

My Hot Take:
Team Win. Seemed like an across the board step up for everyone.

The bench won this game, IMO, Valančiūnas played the guy who plagued the Kings for years, now on the Sacramento side, Keon continues to impress, Jake with hustle, Markelle looks like he has earned more time in the upcoming games, Lyles shot poorly but filled in as he moved a notch further doen the bench. Pretty solid 10 man rotation for Coach DC.

Zach was sweet, DeMar steady and dependable, Keegan looking more and more like a 5th starter ceiling in the HB, Tobias Harris mold than PG/Middleton.

Monk… I still find I curse at my TV with his decision making, including another alley whoops or two. Someone of our community described him as the anti-John Stockton, and that seems to sum him up. Makes me nuts. Bet the cheese sticks to the box on his pizza on half his pies.

I have no doubt that The Domanitor told the medical staff he was fine. You know he wants to be on the court for this team especially down this tough final stretch. Hope he’s okay. Hard to know with him.

I agree with your take. This was a real team win where everybody who stepped on the court was focused and locked-in on their responsibilities. I think Domas going out early required everyone else to step up and bring additional effort to their roles. Best win since the trade deadline without a doubt.

I don’t have much hope for this roster as its currently constructed, but I’ll applaud and be proud of any squad that plays with the heart and effort the Kings played with last night. Consistent effort from beginning to end resulted in a great win that pushed the Kings up the standings into 8th (1gm out of 6th place).

First, great win, especially after losing Domas. Ellis & JV especially. This one gets the GS shitshow back.

Second, for the few of you that intimated that the TKH staff slow walked the win due to pessimism bias, go fuck yourselves. Truly. I have known most of these people for a decade or more. What they do here is a true labor of love. And you should be ashamed of yourselves for calling their motives or efforts into question, all while cowardly hiding behind fake screen names.

People were actually doing that? What a joke. All in all though, great win! String a few more wins together over good teams and I will definitely start taking this team more seriously.

I’ve said it a lot in these threads, but Keon Ellis is the man. Are you kidding me with this guy? Everything he does is additive and the defense in this game against a team like Houston who tends to be pretty loose with the ball was incredible. Big shout out to JV as well. Having a competent backup center is nice for once. Hoping Sabonis is ok because hamstring injuries usually take awhile depending on the severity of the injury.

Well said. I’ve been on the optimistic side and the pessimistic side over the years, and there’s one thing I can say for a fact. Anyone who regularly visits or writes for TKE wants to see nothing more than the Kings succeed. If you come here to say I told you so when the Kings win, or lose. Then come here and eat crow when they don’t.

Or . . . here’s an idea. Understand that regardless of what we think about the current team, we all want them to succeed. We just have different opinions on how to get there.

Not sure which comment(s) you are referring to but your words seem harsh if directed at people who are merely trying to persuade others that the objective should be to win and not to lose. In the last kings mailbag “responding to your questions” post both KH writers wrote that they don’t want to make the playoffs. No-one used that harsh language against them.

Some commenters used yesterday’s preview thread as a post-game thread last night and earlier today. A handful questioned why there was no game thread or quick post-game thread, using the absence of those threads to disparage recent “doom and gloom” opinions of some of the staff writers.

Good win over a good Western competitor. Good effort, and Houston’s offense is hurting them. It’s their weakness. What a different offensive team the Kings are, though. It’s really all about ‘Da Bulls’ now. Ball screen, dribble, dribble, shoot. So not the team of two years ago. Monk is noticeably below his average the last 10 games, and Sabonis is way below. That’s not gonna change. It is what it is.

Hoping Sabonis is OK, but I actually enjoyed a full game of Jonas. A real throwback center. You do indeed need an Uber to get around those screens. And Ellis just continues to improve on the offensive end. What a success story. As ol’ Napear would say, if you don’t like Keon…. But as go Da Bulls, so go the Kings. Not what anybody expected in November.

This game was great to see. It is a game we should have lost but our new and improved team played a consistent game plan even without Sabonis and got it done. The bench is big. The exact opposite of what is was all last year and this year. JV, LaRavia, and Lyles bring a presence on the court missing for so long. No more playing small and hoping to win match ups. We can now play big and dictate our match ups.

The spread of the points and rebounds was even. No single player dominates this team. We even have assists from multiple players!

Lavine is a damn good basketball player. We have a base now with Lavine and Derozan. We have team that is all in on being here. No BS in the media or drama with agents.

We are a decent team with a base to build on. We are no longer a team with a crumbling base and building to satisfy a single player and hoping it works.

It worked well for them. Those were good games as well. This team with new players and Houston surging was not supposed to win this game. We won this game because we had big players instead of an entirely small and defenseless roster. We are better.

Nobody picked the Kings to beat the Rockets except you I guess?

This team had a crumbling base. The franchise player manipulating his way into a trade of his choosing is not a solid base. That is no longer an issue with this team. We can build on something and count on it being there again tomorrow.

The Kings were not supposed to win any of the three games, and I don’t think anyone (including me) picked them for any of those games.

I like most of the changes Monte made since the Fox trade (JV over Len, LaRavia over Huerter, Fultz over McLaughlin) though I’m not yet sold on LaVine as a replacement for Fox in the starting lineup. Hopefully, the team as a whole will overcome my skepticism.

The Kings sweeping the Rockets is great. I am glad to see it and hopefully you are as well.

Lavine and Derozan are here and they are winning with their TEAM.

Not sold on Lavine replacing Fox in the starting lineup? Does that mean you think Lavine should not start? Curious to hear that take if it is what you are concerned about.

Either way Fox is gone and this TEAM is doing better today.

It’s not LaVine’s presence in the starting lineup so much as it is Fox’s absence. Fox’s absence makes Monk the primary (and sometimes the sole) initiator among the starters. With Fox here, MB and DC were able to stagger Fox and Monk, usually with Sabonis accompanying, in lineups to initiate the offense. LaVine, in my opinion, does not fill that role, and we have not yet found anyone else that does.

As of February 6, 2025 Fox is a shooting guard for the San Antonio Spurs. This fact is not questioned by anyone.

Monk is not the ideal point guard but, he is what we currently have. I do not think Fox was a good point guard. He has always been a shooting guard with the Spurs. We have not gone backwards in terms of the point guard position in my opinion.

This team did fill some gaping holes. We have size. We have a forward on the bench. We have a very good back up center. I would love to see this team get a point guard somehow. This team did a complete flip in a week. We were small and shooting guard dominant without much real NBA relevance on our bench. We now have a bench with bigs that are very relevant in the NBA.

Lavine is a very good basketball player and so is Derozan. It is not something that can be ignored. I think this team needs a true starting point guard and a good starting power forward. This has been a need for a long time. Fox is neither one of those.

Being a fan of Fox is understandable and he can be seen playing for the Spurs often. Wishing he was here to stagger with Monk is pointless.

This is well beyond the amount of energy or time that should be spent on the past because that past was not a good basketball team.

The Sacramento Kings are a pretty good basketball team at this point. Good, not great, but better in my opinion.

….quick edit…I appreciate your attitude and stance on Fox. He is a good player and a good person. He chose to break up with the franchise not his fans. Fox did not lead to wins here for eight years and he did not see it changing. His choosing to leave has been good for everyone involved.

We agree in hoping that this team can somehow find a good starting point guard; we disagree on how well we think Fox filled that role while he was here.

As my final point in this conversation, let me try to make clear that I remain a Kings fan and will continue to root for the best outcomes for the team. I will root for LaVine, DeRozan, LaRavia, JV, and all the others somehow to fit together. That said, I remain highly skeptical of how well the current iteration of the team will fare through the end of this season.

So if I’m not mistaken, the Kings have less than 48 hours to convert any 2-way players to regular deals in order to use them in the playoffs. If not, they can’t play should the Kings get there. Also, take into consideration that the Kings have to get to 14 rostered players and Sabonis may be out for an extended amount of time. I suppose Isaac Jones could play some small ball 5, so he seems like an obvious current choice, but I wonder if Monte is waiting word from the medical staff on the status of Domas. It could be that they use a roster spot on another legit big man to platoon with JV for the foreseeable future.

In just doing a quick look at current free agents and one name stood out to me that could be of use: Mo Bamba.

I think he just signed with the Pelicans’ G-League team.

I don’t think that matters. He’s not on a two-way so the Pels don’t have his rights. I think it’s just like Skal playing for Stockton. Any team can sign him if they wish.

Do you see any point guards out there?

I think we are good at center now. We have a great back up center. Our starter is great and will be back. Sabonis has a hamstring issue. That is a over use and fatigue issue. Not a season ending injury.

History question: Back in the STR days, a regular had a tag line something like, “I don’t have OCD I have CDO. It’s like OCD but the letters are in proper order.” I have stolen it and used it for years to the general hilarity and groaning of my friends and acquaintances. My question is: Is that person still here, and who was it? In any event thank you.

Sorry for the late, late comment regarding the win against the Rockets from the perspective of sitting behind the Kings bench a few rows up. There were many good things to watch, and they have been covered by other commenters better than I.

Here is what I noticed looking “around the edges” of the action on the floor. First, Jake LaRavia had a highly impactful game with his defense, rebounding and, encouragingly, his ability to be a point forward in the game.

He looked really good snagging a rebound and then heading up the floor immediately where his dribbling, passing, and creating for others was highly and pleasantly visible.

Jake also played pressure defense all night long and was inside his opponents dribbling space on every possession. He is a thinking defender, often using the out of bounds lines as an extra defender. He had great anticipation in the passing lanes on D and made more than a few great passes setting up his teammates.

Jake and Zach Lavine were often speaking to each other at the tail end of timeouts or on the bench. They seem to be forming a great tandem of intertwined skill sets and look for each other on the court on offense. If Jake becomes a point forward by design it would be a big development at least for parts of the game for the Kings. He looked very good running the floor with the ball and the transition offense in his hands last night. I hope there is some sort of wink and a nod deal that can be worked out with LaRavia that can keep him with the Kings next year and perhaps beyond.

Second, when the Rockets Chip on My Shoulder, Dillon Brooks, decided to use DDR as a catalyst to fire up his teammates the entire Kings bench jumped up and ran, literally ran, to the confrontation. I glanced over at the Rockets bench and, yes, Rockets players had stood up but did not rush the court, lingering mostly closer to their bench, without the same urgency the Kings went to Demar’s aid. The possibility of a fine for leaving the bench may have influenced them, but that thinking had zero impact on Kings players who ran across the floor to confront Brooks.

That’s a good sign in my mind. As some have commented here in other threads, perhaps it’s The Christie-ization of The Kings. The entire team seemed prepared to land a modern day version of Doug’s Rick Fox Uppercut on Brooks in defense of their teammate.

Three, Keegan played a much more aggressive game on offense which is a good thing to see, fighting for second chance offensive rebounds and taking the open shot when it is there for taking. His defense was really important when Green started to heat up in the 3rd period….and I don’t want to not mention how impactful Keon also was when Doug brought him off the bench to slow Green down.

Four, Doug was fun to watch during timeouts, he had his white board out diagramming plays and defenses to the team as a whole. The rotational players were all paying attention and the deeper bench players were also engaged in the row behind them. But, the thing that was interesting to see is after the team huddle broke up and before going back on the floor, Doug never quit teaching. He always finds another one and sometime two players, even starters, to make a separate point…he never misses a chance to teach. It’s a small point, but it says a lot about Doug and those listening to him, at least in this game. As another commenter mentioned, perhaps this team is starting to gel.

It goes without saying….Keon! I was at the LVSL when he played his first game. I think he had nine, maybe ten, the limit in Summer League, personal fouls. But he showed a lot of good raw qualities that maybe the Kings might have a player, but it took some hard squinting to see it in those early days. He has exceeded all that and more that could be seen in that Summer League and in the G League. Keon is a disrupter supreme. Each of his five steals were consequential. What a joy to see him in person. As another commenter noted his offense around the basket is evolving rapidly and he was dazzling on the play the commenter pointed out.

Probably headed to Dallas to watch the game tomorrow. I want to see AV quietly walk up to whoever the Maverick’s equivalent is to Dillon Brooks and while smiling at him remind him that he will be watching him and that he is bigger and stronger than him and he will not hesitate to hard body him to teach him a lesson if he goes after one of his King’s teammates. I watched AV after the DDR incident and that is what happened in the game about a minute or so after the double technical. “Quiet diplomacy” by AV with the muscle to back it up. There is a reason Dillon didn’t score any points after the second period. That was one of them.

Go Kings.

JMan and Rob, it was my pleasure. The perspective at a live game is entirely different that the flat screen. Happy to have both. Headed to Dallas to cheer.
