The Sacramento Kings announced on Thursday that rookie Devin Carter has been fully cleared for return following his shoulder surgery this summer. From the Kings:
Kings guard Devin Carter has been cleared for unrestricted basketball activity following left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum on July 11th.
Carter was drafted with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, but has not appeared in any games for the Kings, including Summer League. The Kings previously indicated that they were aware of Carter’s shoulder injury at the time of the draft, with Carter saying the injury occurred in a pre-draft workout, and that further evaluation after the draft led to the decision to repair the torn labrum before the season began. Carter played through the injury during his senior season at Providence, but aggravated it further during the pre-draft process.
The question now becomes when Carter will see his first game action, and how much can he help a Kings team in vital need of a shot in the arm. Carter would, hopefully, provide the Kings with another defensive player. Carter is another guard, standing just 6’2, but his wingspan measured at 6’8.75 at the combine.
Welcome back to action, Devin. The Kings can use all the help they can get.
This is great news! Now we have someone who can start at center tonight if Domas is out. Gotta keep trying something new to see what works!
Devin to the rescue!…?
Hoping this DC is even better than the last. Good luck and success young fella! Go kings
I’m excited to see what kind of player he is, but I have my doubts that he gets any meaningful minutes. I mean, if Brown can’t get Keon consistent minutes, then how is Carter going to crack the rotation. Just too many guards.
Maybe Brown’s “searching” will lead to Carter.
I’m not too sure of his PG skills because I see him more as an off guard like Marcus Smart. That would mean, if he’s got the game, he’s gonna eat into the minutes shared by Monk, Huerter, Keon, and Colby Jones. We may really get to see how unbalanced this roster is. Someone is either not going to get minutes or find themselves traded.
He’ll probably start tonight (j/k).
Would not be surprising.
Once we see him play basketball we can see if he an off guard. Being a first round pick, if he is it all capable, he will likely play over Keon and Colby.
This team gains nothing with another guard but he is our current trick.
22 Skidoo! (sorry, I am very old and the reference is even older (though not ElRon Toro old… because, the term is post-Jurassic)
Notes from the combine on Devin, son of Anthony, Carter, wearing Kings #22:
Carter’s other strengths include:
It is with hopeful and divine providence, that the former Friar, obviously a very athletic player, joins a team that could use more athleticism, and will have a positive impact.
I am anxious to see him in a Kings uni and on the court.
An undersized guard that plays big because he can jump has “length”. We have seen this before.
On the bright side, he should eat into Colby’s minutes. Unfortunately we still have nobody to take minutes from Isaac Jones.
Sure we do, Mike Brown
Unfortunately, I don’t trust Mike’s judgement enough to actually do it consistently.
Me either on any of it. I have very little faith in MB at this point especially concerning young players’ minutes.
The team has sucked, and Dalton Knecht has looked pretty good down in LA. If Carter doesn’t look good sooner than later, it won’t be long until the howling begins. It will be unfair to him, of course, but that won’t make much difference.
Welcome, Devin. Be advised that your best may not be good enough.
I’d say it’s not just Knecht. Bub Carrington, Kel’el Ware, Jared McCain, Tristan da Silva, Yves Misi, Jaylen Wells, and others look good as well. If Monte missed on Carter there will be than just howling.
“Hey Devin! We’ve got the perfect welcome shirt straight from The Kings Herald!”

We are the River City, so when we take a dive for the season, we water tank.
The best guard in the draft is not the four this team obviously needs.
Devin= It is time to impress Sacramento and become a fan favorite and i know you will
Per Sean Cunningham:
Put him in Stockton until he transforms into a forward.
Yay the season is saved by another undersized player.
Collect the entire set!
If Carter even has average passing skills the team’s assists per game could double!
I think Devin Carter was a good pick in the draft my Monte. Some of you have already buried the guy. Why don’t you be at least a little optimistic and give him a chance. He might turn out to be a good player for the Kings. GO DEVIN!
Breathe. No one is burying Devin in this thread. Pretty typical commenting from a fan base of an underperforming and disappointing team, imho.
Jack is breathing. He is constantly trying to come up with ways to contribute to the discussion and offer ideas on how to improve this team. Jack is vibrant and thriving.
If he can come in playing hard, sound defense, hit some open shots, and be a disruptor, that would really help.
This team is really lacking fire and passion. That needs to change.
You mean like Keon?
Yes. Both of them could cause some havoc
A second guard that is a defensive specialist but has a questionable offense is not what we need.
Only if MB plays them which is super doubtful.
He prefers players who take open shots whether they make them or not and even if they suck at everything else.
If our “shooters” were hitting their shots at expected rates, the team’s assists per game could double.
So for this convo, billo gets the assist & you get the bucket.
Passing the ball to the open player. Making more than one pass to move an entire defense. Both of these and many other things create assists and wins.
Taking poor shots while playing isolation basketball leads to poor shooting and low assists.
Monte lands Devin the electrician on to the listing Titanic that really needed a plumber.
A great description and accurate synopsis of the situation.
If Carter can play. He pulls minutes from Keon and Jones.
We do not need another guard. That has been well established. Now everyone will pretend he is the savior.
I like the idea of Devin leading the Stockton Kings for a bit. Let him get his legs under him before being expected to preform at G1C. After the trade deadline, or sooner, there will hopefully be more minutes for him in the Sacramento rotation. I get excited when I think of the defensive potential of a Devin Carter and Keon Ellis back court. Welcome back to basketball Mr. Carter!
