Domantas Sabonis finished Tuesday’s contest against the Milwaukee Bucks with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and a steal. That 22 point 11 rebound double-double secured Sabonis’ place in Kings franchise recordbooks, as it represented Sabonis’ 47th consecutive double-double. The previous franchise record was 46, set by Jerry Lucas in 1968.
Sabonis is now 6 double-doubles shy of tying the post-merger NBA record of 53 double-doubles, set by Kevin Love.
It’s important that we distinguish that record with the “post-merger” note, because the pre-merger mark seems unlikely to ever fall. From the Elias Sports Bureau (by way of Wikipedia):
Wilt Chamberlain holds the record with 227 consecutive double-doubles from 1964 to 1967. Chamberlain also holds the second- and third-longest continuous streaks of double-doubles with 220 and 133.
That’s just ridiculous. Let’s get back to Domas and the modern era.
Sabonis has been the very model of consistency for the Kings this season. For the year he’s averaging 20.1 points, a league-leading 13.5 rebounds, and 8.4 assists. It’s fitting that Domas set the franchise record on a night that was, by his season numbers, just an average night for him.
Sabonis was 3rd Team All NBA last season, and finished 7th in MVP voting. This year he’s averaging 1 point, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists more than he did last season.
Not an All-Star, though. Right, coaches?
Congratulations to Domantas Sabonis on this hugely impressive milestone. Here’s to the streak continuing as long as possible.
Well done Domas.
Finish of the season and make it 81 straight.
That’s 47 + 18 + 16
Hopefully it is not wasted this season. He needs to show the world in two playoff series this year.
Records are made to be broken. He broke the King’s record and someday, I’m 80 and not in my lifetime, someone will break his. As much as this is an incredible feat I truly believe he would rather have a champion ring. Why not both? GO SABONIS! GO KINGS!
Crazy how we’ve gotten so used to Sabonis having double doubles (and even triple doubles) so often that it’s often something that we’ve come to normalize. It’s truly incredible how consistent he is on getting that stat line almost every night.
Especially since he hits the double-double mark by the early third quarter most of the time.
I think the who league and national media is numb to it. I’ve seen more posts and comments on the interwebs regarding Josh Hart getting a triple-double last night than I’ve seen on Sabonis getting all of his 22 triple-doubles this season.
The Kings need a jersey that says LOS ANGELES on the front instead of Sacramento. After that, first team all-NBA for Sabonis is assured, and he’d even have a shot at MVP.
More of an In ‘N’ Out guy than a Pizza Guy, amirite?
There is more than a non-zero chance that we are witnessing the first chapters of the greatest Kings center (Sacramento or otherwise) in franchise history. He’s already passed Tank Thompson, at least on a par with Cousins, and nipping at the heels of Brad Miller and Vlade. All that’s left after that is Joe Kleine.
An absolute pleasure to watch. And on the short list of biggest motors in the league.
Not as talented as Couisins but double the value to winning and being a true teammate . Glad the Cousins days are over as he sucked the Kings joy out of my life .
Sabonis is already ahead of everyone except Cousins and by the end of next season he will surpass him easily.
I actually have Cousins behind Miller (1) and Divac (2). Cousins was more physically talented than the other two, and he suffered for the circus that was the Kings during his era, but he was also a bit of a contributor to that circus.
I also contend that if Miller and Vlade flipped time scripts in Sacramento, the Kings might have won a ring or two. Not minimizing Vlade as a glue guy, but Miller really did everything on the floor juuuuuuust a little bit better than Vlade.
Now, these guys all have between 385 (Miller) and 470 (Cousins) games for the Kings, and Sabonis plays #159 tonight, so for me, Domas probably needs to log another season and a half or two to objectively overtake these guys. All of that said, this is 100% subjective on my part.
Related, Fox probably passes Peja tonight for 3rd on the all-time Sac. Kings scoring list, behind only Richmond and Cousins. Fox is already the all-time Sac. era assist leader (Theus has more franchise assists, but some of those came in KC). He’ll also probably be the all-time steals leader by the end of next season, and he could catch JT for games played by the end of next season as well.
Sabonis, Vlade, and Miller are all basketball players that won games and contributed positively. These guys can all be compared.
Cousins was a sideshow in the circus while doing his best to be the main attraction. He couldn’t even do that.
Uh, what about…
The Causwell Classic.
For me, he’s already seated himself at the head of the table in the Sacramento era, and only behind Lucas for the greatest in franchise history.
Going back to Day 1, I haven’t seen any other big in a Sacramento uniform do what Sabonis does on a nightly basis.
Lucas played more 4 than 5 with Cincinnati . Wayne Embry was the starter during most years .
Are you joking? You really have NO idea what you are talking about, do you?
And of course, as usual, you like to ride the fence, receptive to add a new splinter to the nether regions, so you can prsopectively claim you were not wrong.
Cousins could NOT hold Domas jock strap.
Cousins was extremely foul prone, extremely turnover prone, and took a boat load of bad shots including quick 3s.
This killed the team and the goal of winning.
Domas exhibits none of these success hindering tendencies.
Domas is a legend in the making. Boogie is a has-been that never-was competing in China.
Why do you think Cousins teams could often not win 30 games in a season? Being a discerning player with self-control and self-restraint is in of itself a skill. Discipline and work ethic is a skill. Cousins had shit for discipline. Cousins was the perpetual victim, by coaches and refs who “mistreated” him.
The guy was a loser. But in your book. he is on par with Domas?
TOTAL BLASPHEMY.
It took Cousins like 5 seasons before he was no longer fat. Domas is a lean mean machine. His diet and training is impeccable. This is also a skill, being dedicated to your craft.
Cousins was the more natural scorer. He was more of a force out of the low box, and he had a softer touch on his shot. But this did not translate into great effeciency.
In his best years as a scorer, Cousins was around 56% TS% (54% on his career). High volume jacker. Hacker. Chronic complainer. Bad assist to TO ratio of less than one (3.7 to 4.0 per 36 minutes).
For all the immense talent Cousins possessed as a scorer and a passer, it amounted to meddling effeciency,
Domas has a career assist to turnover of 4.7 to 2,5 or close to 2:1. In his tenure with us, he is shooting around 67% TS% (compared to Boogie 56% in his best years). Cousins scored more but so what, it did not translate to winning.
This year, Domas is the HUB over our offense and has been mostly extraordinary. He is almost 3:1 ASST to TOV with 8.4 ASST to 3.3 TOV. Again, Cousins, the brilliant dime dropper, was less than 1 assist per TOV.
But yeah, these guys are “on par, at least”. What a joke! Go be a Lakers fans if you are going to have these outrageous takes with NO merit and insult our first or second best player.
It is insult to the GREATNESS of Domas to compare him to a FAT LOSER like Cousins.
It will actually be a TRAVESTY if Domas is NOT All-NBA this season, and pockets his 1 million dollar bonus. If you had a vote, pretty sure you’d vote Joker, Bam and Chet!
Don’t get me started with “nipping at the heels of Brad Miller and Vlade”. I saw those scrubs play. NO COMPARISON in terms of level of domination and excellence. No comparison. And it is not recency bias. Recency bias is a thing, unless you know it is a thing, and through self-awareness, make it a non-thing.
In summary……Cousins is a shit head that licks donkey balls.
…..and intelligent.
Mr. Consistency.
AND Mr. tough-as-nails!
AND Mr. Sabonis!
Also, number 1 in screen assists and the hardest working player in the NBA . Really enjoy his team spirit and unselfish game .
Setting a franchise record (not a Sacramento record) in just your second full season with the team is quite a remarkable feat.
Monk set a record as well last night for assists by a reserve psssing Bobby Jackson.
As much as I liked Haliburton, I believe that if we had not made that trade for Sabonis and the rest of our roster was the same that the Kings have now, that they’d have 7-10 fewer wins.
Loved Hali but totally agree as Fox would not be as dominant without Sabonis .
They’ve only played two full seasons together but I have no doubt Domas and Foxy will be the next two to go up in the rafters in due time. Hopefully we will see some playoff success along with it.
