The Kings Herald Show returns with plenty of Sacramento Kings news and notes to discuss this week.
Kings Pulse Host Brenden Nunes joins Jerry Reynolds, Will Griffith, and Tony Xypteras on the podcast to break down what’s wrong with the Sacramento Kings following a three-game losing streak, including a lengthy conversation about De’Aaron Fox, leadership, and which direction the Kings need to go in before the season is really lost.

I just gotta say I don’t see why you gotta belabor what’s wrong with Brenden and there is nothing wrong with Jerry Reynolds. 😉 Listening now.
I enjoy both and do not agree 100% with either ! Do not get your point !
The games are way more depressing without Jerry and I truly believe that’s why this season sucks way more than the 17 win Kevin Martin Kings. You can tell that Katie, Mark and Kyle don’t do their homework. If I have to watch a 30 point Spurs blowout, at least tell me something insightful about Jakob Poetl or anything really
Mark tells me on a nightly basis that Buddy is “elite”, is that not doing his homework?!
In a related note, weather and climate aren’t the same thing.
And yet you determine the state of the climate by watching weather patterns over time. Buddy Hield needs a coat.

But that time consists of years, decades and centuries, not six-game stretches.
Hield will be in the top fifty of three-pointers made by February or March, and is only in his sixth season. He remains above 40% for his career, and will likely crack the all-time top forty this season.
There is certainly plenty to take issue with as it relates to Buddy Hield, but as little as I enjoy Mark Jones, Hield is an elite volume three-point shooter.
Agreed, 6-game stretches are not a fair amount of games. Lets look at the season then, a 28-game stretch: 2nd in 3 pts made and 97th in 3 pt. %. And, numbers are declining year-over-year. Just shooting, and missing, a lot of 3’s isn’t really a skill.
Specifically, Buddy is down to 35% on threes for the year, which is below average for NBA rotation guards.
Over the last four seasons (a third of a good NBA career) Hield has dropped from 43% to 39% to 35%. I imagine he’s a better than 35% shooter in a better situation, but the results are what they are on this team.
I’m always pretty impressed when someone completely misses the point, but I’ve learned that it’s generally deliberate.
You haven’t disputed a single thing that I’ve said, because the career numbers I referenced include this season’s numbers.
You can call a horse “cow” if you want, but that won’t give it udders.
Can we agree on “formerly elite” and call it a day?
His career numbers say otherwise.
If it’s your contention that including this season and going forward that Hield will never again be above the league average on a large volume of 3PA, you’re certainly free to put it out there.
The math says otherwise.
lol.
The defense is terrible, needs a ton of work, and effort is definitely an issue, but saying that “you can’t tell me that they’re playing with 100 percent effort on every defensive possession?”
I don’t think that anyone can tell you that about any team in the history of sport.
There is a legitimate problem, and it will require significant changes to overcome, but if there was anything ever that didn’t require this kind of hyperbole, it would be the defense of the Sacramento Kings.
Agree with Jerry.
Rick Adelman made the Hall of Fame.
He should be able to get his name recognized in G1C.
I wish we would have just honored Adelman instead of Vivek’s strategy of just giving jobs to that entire roster.
The only members of the ‘02 Kings Vivek should’ve rehired are Geoff Petrie and Rick Adelman.
Not to take anything away from Adelman, but they named a hallway after Jerry. Jerry is too gracious and good of a person to ever complain, but I’m not. I thought it was a little perfunctory given his long time positive contribution to pretty much every fan who watched a Kings basketball game on TV in Sacramento. I don’t expect much more for Adelman from the dismissive little chap.
100% agree.
I hadn’t thought about it, but the organization under this ownership and that previous seems to overvalue its players, and severely undervalue the contribution of its coaches, and also a guy like Jerry, who’s coached, but has also made so many other valuable contributions to the club and city.
It’s all the more glaring given that it’s not as if there are just too many from which to choose,
Of course HB, Ty and Holmes need more shots based on their historic and recent effeciency, but the reason they are not getting them, primarily, is Buddy is using up possessions that are better served elsewhere.
How long was this Pod? About 1.5 hours? Talking about everything wrong with the team yet scant 30-90 seconds mentioning the real problem….Buddy Yield!
If you want to be brutally honest, and I assume you do, why do you not just say Buddy needs to be DNP-CD. Why not say also TD is obviously better and admit to your misassessment? It is okay I forgive you!
And it is also strange suggesting a blow up of the team without first getting rid of Buddy Yield and seeing if that changes your fortunes. It is called addition by subtraction!
This show is informative and insightful to a degree, but you cannot be afraid to hurt feelings of any player. If you want the team to win, and you want to prescribe means to do so, then you should advocate for Buddy to be gone, and anything short of this is not saying enough.
Fox has caught a lot of grief for his play and his press conferences. There was this prevailing sentiment he does not care.
Then lo and behold he gets downright CHOKED UP RE: to question whether he wants to win.
And this reminds me of when he lost the game when he was a player at Kentucky and he and Malik Monk were CRYING in the lockerroom!
Where are the critics saying Fox does not care now? GTFO!
It is not a matter of effort, I think the issue is that often Fox does not respect the PG enough and he is better suited to be checking SGs than PGs against most opponents.
Regardless Fox will be at 56% TS% soon enough wait and see.
Fox talking about effort vs execution is perfectly valid.
And it was Will who misinterpreted this comment to take it to mean the team is stupid. No, Will, Fox is not saying the team is stupid. He is saying they are not good enough.
If you go back and listen to his comments, he talks about CLE not having guys “looking for a bucket”. This was obvious reference to Buddy and Marvin.
This show has positive elements, but it is not quite over the target. if you want to over the target commentary, direct hit EVERY time, follow my posts. 😉
I am the bridge beween almost truth and facts.
I do like the point Caucasian Comet made in regards to Ty needs to get better at attacking closeouts. He does not have pull-up jumper in his repertoire and teams are exploiting that. The scouting report is out. Ty has the running floater and he has the laser accuracy from deep but in between he’s tentative and unsure. So it is more than just a reluctance to shoot with Ty, there is an actual flaw to his game.
Notice how NO ONE on this Pod has the “audacity” to suggest Davion should start aside Fox, check the best point of attack player on the opponent , while at the same time bemoaning the lack of effort on defense? Why? Because I suggested first and two months ago, before the season began?
Anyway, it is a good show. 7 out of 10 for the analysis. The missing 3 points I provide.
You do make some great points and seem very insightful! You may prove to be very wrong about Buddy when he gets to another team ! Buddy Yield may again be Buddy Buckets !
Buddy on a team with real leadership would definitely help his efficiency b/c they wouldn’t put up with these shenanigans.
Great podcast. Lotta terrific insights throughout. Although I do disagree the main problem is defense, I think the main problem is that the offense makes the defense worse and the attitude just isn’t there.
Guess we’ll find out can this team pick itself off the mat (probably not).
Tank vs. tinker-
problem with a tank strategy is that 3 teams have a head start. Draft picks are un-balanced- too many teams have more than their share and too many have less. The “less” teams don’t have anything to trade for. The best chance is to get a less than current elite team who needs a single piece- a Buddy or Barnes – for a young player + picks. The current tanking teams won’t give up their hard won assets (picks). The top teams don’t have anything.
The draft is pure crap shoot- even the top picks. If they get the top pick there is a chance but that won’t happen. Otherwise you have to get lucky in the middle. Luck is not a plan.
My preference would be keep Fox, trade everything else, tank the season, get a good pick and maybe a lucky middle one.
I would keep Fox because he is good and his value, as Jerry says, is less because teams that want to trade already have good PG’s.
Tinkering just puts off the inevitable.
Don’t trade draft picks, even for Simmonds.
low bball iq across the board, execution, and effort.
Draymond Green doesn’t score 20 a game but is the leader of the dubs. He calls out every player for their effort and keeps guys accountable while holding himself to the highest standard for being the anchor of a top 5 defense. The Kings need a defensive anchor and defensive wings.
It helps that the best player is a hard worker, unselfish and a great team mate! Green helps Curry but less than Curry helps him ! Remember the 15 win season with Steph out a lot ?
