DeMar DeRozan Resets After Difficult Season with Kings

The veteran admits last year took a mental toll but says self-reflection, tough workouts, and team chemistry have left him recharged and ready to win.

DeMar DeRozan had a tough go last season. Didn’t we all? The 2024-25 campaign was a disappointing mess that perpetuated the very real reputation of an unserious franchise that dates back decades in Sacramento.

The future hall of famer found himself smack dab in the middle of it – an in-season coaching change, a midseason franchise player trade and a losing season that ended in a home court blowout loss in the participation trophy that is the Play-In tournament.

DeRozan didn’t hold back Monday at media day when describing what it was like to be part of that:

“There was just a lot of shit that was going on that internally we tried to fight through as players, and I can only imagine from a coaching staff. With so much change from the front office, ya’ll know, there was a lot going on,” DeRozan told reporters. “It’s not nobody’s fault, we all have issues internally with our jobs and sometimes you have to learn how to pivot and maneuver through that. I think that’s just what it was, just call it what it was: Last year just was internally a shit show.”

This is a new way to put it, right up there with Rudy Gay calling it Basketball Hell.

Last season seemed to have got to DeRozan so much he needed to get away from it all to really understand how much it was weighing on him.

“Sometimes when you are in a relationship, you have to get out of the relationship to realize who you are,” said DeRozan, who admitted he wasn’t himself last year from a mental standpoint and that he could have been better about his approach.

So, his approach this offseason was to re-find himself. After the season ended he took some time to look himself in the mirror and think about the weight he had been carrying due to negativity. A self-described optimist, this weight didn’t allow him to be himself.

From that realization he was dedicated to a reset. He found motivation by working out with his teammates, feeding off the hunger they had going into this season. He saw his new teammate Dennis Schroder win a championship with Germany in the EuroBasket, as well as earning MVP, laying a foundation for positive momentum going into training camp. He found motivation by all of the “bullshit” media writes.

He tried a lot of other new things this summer to push himself mentally. He wouldn’t share all of the details with reporters Monday about what those new things were, but he spent time doing things that would give him a mental edge from a work ethic standpoint, saying he tried a lot of things that “beat me down,” but he got through it.

He now says he’s recharged, rejuvenated, re-motivated and “extremely excited” for the season, describing it as a chance to “make right of the wrongs” that happened.

“I always wanted to come back [to the Kings],” he said. “Not once have I questioned if I would be back or not, I always just wanted to give the fans and this organization what I came here to do and that is to win.”

He understands Scott Perry’s and Doug Christie’s point of view and vision and is ready to move forward, compete and win.

“I knew if we had the opportunity to be under Doug, and see Doug’s vision and have a training camp with Doug, with the players we needed, we can do something. We didn’t have that last year because so much stuff was happening. So, I think this time around, you will see a much different team,” he said.

What do we always say about media day? False hope because every team has the same record, right? Well, normally I would say the same thing about a lot of what DeRozan said here, but honestly if you watch this interview, this really does feel different. It is almost as if the “shit show” of last season might have turned into a true moment of self-reflection for him and unlocked a new mentality as a result.

DeRozan was (and has been) too honest with his opinion on how bad things were last season to not believe him when he says he dug deep and went through a true mentality shift to readjust his mindset and gain his optimism back.

This is sports movie montage stuff here.

What a time to be a Kings fan.

“Last year just was internally a shit show.”

This is almost an understatement. It was Team Fox and Team Domas, as clicky as a middle school group of kids. Grown men acting like kids. I don’t expect things to change this season.

I don’t know bout you guys but my impression from DDR’s interview is that things were shitty from training camp on. This was not my understanding of last season. I was under the impression that it all started going bad when Mike Brown was “suprisingly” fired.

By the sound of it, I don’t think Mike Brown was managing the players well. It also gave me the impression that Monte McNair was also doing a shitty job. How or why exactly I’m not so sure. Of course we can always say it’s because of Vivek and likely be mostly correct in that statement.

This DDR interview got me thinking though, I wonder if things started going bad at the 2024 draft. Was that the moment that the shit show began? I’m kinda thinking so. Hear me out…

Lets say Monte was actually in charge and making all the decisions his job demands with minimal disruption from Vivek which back then I think a lot of us thought that was the case. More so than in all the previous Vivek years. I remember reading in here a lot that “Maybe Vivek finally is letting the smart people do what they were hired to do”.

Then… Monte selected Devin Carter. Thats when the shit show started. 13th pick in a season of getting an allstar in free agency and high expectations to bounce back and get back into the playoffs after barely missing it one year after the beam team and Monte picks an injured guard who won’t play the entire season. On a team with too many guards already and a guy named Keon Ellis that you just signed to his first real contract. That pick was essentially wasted in terms of how it was used to improve the 2024/25 Sacramento Kings team desperate to make the playoffs. Did that piss off Vivek? I’m guessing yes in hindsight. Did that piss off Mike Brown? I’m guessing yes in hindsight. Did that piss off your core guys also wanting as much help as possible to get back into the playoffs? Remember Domas’s comments at last years media day? It went something like this : “It was frustrating seeing all these guys getting signed and trades getting made. I know we were close on a couple things that didn’t happen so I was really happy when I saw we finally made a move and got Demar”. Domas wasn’t happy with the off season but was making the responsible statements to the media. As I am sure Fox was, and a lot of the other guys. Last summers off season was a much bigger shit show then I think we realized. It was masked by the last ditch effort of signing of Demar.

That 13th pick could have been traded as was expected to get some serious help, it could have been packaged with something else. It could have been used on a position of need on a team with some very obvious clear cut needs. It wasn’t. That pick could have been used on a young HEALTHY player that could actually contribute and be part of the rotation. It wasn’t.

I think the shit show started on draft day and then after that the vibes were completely off. Anger, frustration, confusion by the owners, the coaches and the players. That one shit draft selection was the snow ball that turned into an avalanche.

Food for thought after hearing that DDR interview. Things were bad before training camp even started. Which, as I said, was not my impression until today.

This year it’s going to be better though. My false hope kings fan fingers are crossed.

I feel it was a combination of things compiling on each other.

1) The 2024 season fizzled and disappointed led by the injures to Huerter and Monk and stumbling into the play-in.

2) Kings get whooped by the Pels in the play-in for what felt like the 100th time in a row.

3) The draft disappointed, especially when it was rumored that the Kings were picking for someone else at #13 and whatever deal didn’t happen. Maybe that was what Domas was referring to?

4) Kings then dumped Davion, Sasha and #45 pick or “cap space” only to learn Sasha wanted to go back to Europe.

5) Offseason started out slow and the Kings appeared to settle for DDR a week into free agency. They dumped Barnes and future draft capital for what seemed like “do something” move.

6) Next season started with another disappointing decision to start Huerter over Keon.

7) DDR joined the fray and the offense turned to shit, Keegan was ignored, and Keon was benched.

It was all a slow train wreck beginning from the end of 2024 season until the Fox trade nearly a year later.

I think everyone on TKH, including myself, has been calling this thing a shit show for quite awhile now. I really want to know if any Kings’ players read TKH because I bet some do and DeMar would be one I think could be reading it and laughing at our jokes.
Love DDR as a person but I’m hoping they ship him out midseason when this shit show goes full diarrhea shower.
I need someone from TKH to ask DDR and others if they have heard of TKH or ever read anything from site. I need to send a link from an article to Vivek lol

Demar is a bright guy, I doubt he’s relying on the likes of us to help him find his words.

Let’s cut up that quote even more, shall we?

With so much change from the front office, ya’ll know, there was a lot going on….just call it what it was: Last year just was internally a shit show.

I don’t have a problem with DDR. He appears to be a legit guy who plays a style of play that doesn’t really jibe with the modern NBA.

I do have a question though….how do you spell “shit show”? Is it spelled…v..I .v .e..k?
