One of the biggest adjustments to the NBA so far for Davion Mitchell is the amount of free time he has. The Sacramento Kings rookie told media Tuesday that in college he had classes on top of basketball responsibilities and that shift to only having basketball responsibilities is something he is still getting used to.
And how he phrased it makes it clear the 23-year-old doesn’t necessarily like too much down time. In fact, the Kings are having to tell him to stop trying to work out so much.
“They’re telling me to go home, but I feel like I’ve just got to work on so many things. They’re telling me to get out of the gym, go get some rest because I don’t know, it’s like 82 games and I’ve never played this long of a season before,” Mitchell said. “So, they’re kind of helping me out a little bit, but there’s so many things I want to work on. But yeah, they’re running me out of here.”
Mitchell said he did take a couple of days off after the NBA Summer League, but that was it.
“I tried not to take too much time off because I just hate taking so much time off because you have to get back in your rhythm. So, I took a couple days off because they said I needed it because I’ve never played 82 games before,” he said.
While it is certainly true that NBA players need to pace themselves and not put too much pressure on their bodies before training camp, especially rookies, it is a really positive sign to see how much Mitchell wants to work.
Tyrese Haliburton has taken notice.
“They had to tell him that he can’t be in here [laughs], but he really is in here all the time. He lives here it seems like and that’s a great trait to have. He works so hard that it is no surprise why he is where he is and has had the success he has had in his basketball career. So that’s refreshing for me to see a guy working like that, it makes me work harder and I hope everybody sees that and it works that way for everybody,” Haliburton said.
Harrison Barnes discussed the maturity Mitchell displays.
“His maturity and his work ethic. He comes in, he’s a professional, which is something you don’t see a lot with younger guys in the league, but I think his time being in college and obviously winning a championship has allowed him to come in very mature, know what he needs to do, know how to take care of his body – those are all the recipes that are going to set him up to be successful I think from day one,” Barnes said.
Mitchell has enjoyed playing with Fox so far and hopes to one day be able to emulate the pace he plays at.
“Fox kind of took me under his wing. I love watching him play man. His pace is amazing. I want to get there one day where he’s so fast, but you don’t know because he plays so slow and then he uses his speed when he has to. It’s like somewhere I’m looking forward to getting to, but just keep watching him and keep playing against him I think I’ll be able to get there,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell also shared his thoughts on the potential three-guard lineup featuring himself, De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton.
“I think one of the challenges, things that we will have to work on is being able to guard the bigger guards, being able to rebound at a high level since we’re all smaller guards not known for rebounding. So, we’ve got to actually put on our body on somebody, boxing out – those little things that I think will help us,” Mitchell said. “I also played with three guards in college so I’m kind of used to not always having the ball in my hands, playing off the ball, knowing who gets the shot, who is hot, things like that. So, it’s not really that new to me so I’m looking forward to it.”
Here are the full media sessions with Mitchell and Barnes.
Spend that extra time in video room instead of the gym. The brain is an important thing to develop as well. Train mentally to see how teams might guard you, their tendencies, etc.
Coach might disapprove, but screw Walton.
Only because Luke is still catching up on watching the tapes from last season!
Hell even that can get exhausting. Sometimes the best thing to do is rest. But he is young and will learn what works best for him in an 82 game season!
I hope that Mitchell takes the team orders seriously. I’d hate for him to wind up with muscle strains or other fatigue-related injuries. It’s very much a brand new ballgame, compared to all of his previous experience. Pacing himself will be key.
Agree, and the 82 game schedule is its own conditioning marathon ! Davion will likely learn and adjust quickly !
He will hit the mother of all rookie walls in January. But he’s not dumb and takes his craft seriously, so he will learn to work as hard at resting as he does at working. Rest is a form of work at this level, after all.
DRAGO MITCHELL needs to have an off night, er…take a night off!

Weird how Hield’s name never comes up in 3-guard lineups. It’s like he’s gone already
Hield is the new backup small forward!
Hield at Power Forward or Center
MUSCLE WATCH CONTINUED….
Ailene?
Seems like he’s got the drive, and leads by example. He could be a culture changer.
Yeah, I think this is the first time we got someone who is a gym rat and has a great work ethic. Never heard that before in the off-season.
Heard that a lot about Buddy Hield a few years back, so….
Man, just get rid of Buddy already and let me live or die with Fox, Mitchell, Hali in the starting 5!
3-on-5 basketball…Vivek will be happy about that.
I really hope he isn’t included in any trade.
Somewhere, Allen Iverson is laughing.
Jason Anderson help but giggle when mentioning the team’s playoff drought and reminding players that one more year will set the record.
Remember where you are…
We do not practice and defense is not anything we want to try to do…
Stop ruining the vacation for the rest of the team.
I sat behind the bench at LVSL in Cox Pavillon during one game, in the more intimate arena, and, there is a part of Davion’s game that hasn’t received an abundance of recognition nor praise that was evident in that game.
Every time Jah’mius Ramsey came off the court Davion met him half way, walking out onto the court, pointing to spots on the court, rotations on offense, possible passes. If that wasn’t enough of a good sign in itself, Davion sat next to him on the bench and actively talked to him constantly. Just listening in, it was a super shot of confidence and instruction on pushing the pace, taking the ball to the rim and taking his shot.
Davion consistently looked for Ramsey in the early parts of the first quarter of every game, getting him involved and breathing confidence into Jah’mius’s game. He is more than just a defensive specialist. He instinctively teaches and coaches and pushes and prods, one of those players that makes those around him try harder and play better than they might otherwise.
It was Summer League. I expect nothing less from Davion when the NBA TV lights turn on. You might as well ask him to change the color of his eyes. Not humanly possible for him. Sacto fans are in for a treat in terms of his total commitment to the game and his team and helping other players excel.
Good stuff, and if he plays all out and shows those leadership qualities, that almost matters more than how good he is in becoming an instant fan favorite.
ive said it before, but he reminds me of young Chris Paul.
Those games were fun to watch especially after all the dubs fans left the building right before
Davion “Doesn’t Take an Off-night” Mitchell.
Definitely AVIOds Naps Mitchell
While I like the enthusiasm and desire, getting out a bit will give him some relaxation and perspective. All work and no play…….
On the bright side, it’s only 82 games when you play for the Kings. Most teams play more than that! ????????♂️
Half the league makes the playoffs. So in theory each team has a 50/50 chance of making it to the playoffs each year…
