Celtics 101, Kings 100: Sacramento’s chance to steal a win rattles out

The Kings didn't deserve a win, but nearly got one anyway.
By | 149 Comments | Apr 5, 2024

Any Sacramento Kings fan could have predicted the final outcome of this game. The Kings were fresh off a disappointing loss to the New York Knicks, and on a back to back against the league’s best team. The Celtics were without Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, but Kings fans know that just means the loss will be a little more bitter. And for most of the game, it went to script. But how the game reached its conclusion, with Boston winning 101-100, was anything but expected.

The game started as you might have predicted. The Kings looked sloppy, and tired legs led to shots being just off. The Celtics were firmly in command, and it seemed like we were headed for another blowout loss. The Kings, to their credit, fought back. De’Aaron Fox had 20 points in the second quarter, after just a single point in the first quarter, and had the Kings within 4 points at the half.

The third quarter was a mess. The wheels came off, as the Celtics executed on both ends of the floor. The Kings threw every defensive scheme they could think of at the Celtics, but it didn’t matter. The Kings also couldn’t get any momentum on offense, as Boston’s swarming defense disrupted everything Sacramento tried to do.

By the midway point of the fourth quarter, the Kings were down 20 and the game seemed over. But then Boston pulled their starters, while Mike Brown refused to waive the white flag. And a funny thing happened, the Kings actually came back! The Kings took the lead on a De’Aaron Fox banked three, only for Xavier Tillman to score on the other end. Mike Brown called a time out with 7 seconds left.

The ball was inbounded to De’Aaron Fox, who got a defended-but-fairly-clean look at a midrange jumper. In that moment I thought it was going in, but it bounced off the rim. Keegan Murray soared in for the rebound, and attempted to put up an attempt without ever touching the ground. It also missed. Colby Jones had a final attempt, but was clobbered and missed entirely as the buzzer sounded. The whistles remained silent.

Game over.

It was a game the Kings didn’t really deserve to win, but it’s still disappointing when they came so close to stealing a much-needed win. The Kings are now tied with the Los Angeles Lakers at 44-33. The Kings hold the tiebreaker but sit on the razor’s edge, in jeopardy of falling into the bottom bracket of the play-in.

Odds and Ends

  • De’Aaron Fox finished the game with 40 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.
  • Domantas Sabonis continued his double-double streak, finishing with 16 points and 16 rebounds. He fought hard, but struggled against Boston’s size, especially Kristaps Porzingis
  • Porzingis finished with 20 points, second most on the Celtics. It really seems like Zinger is happy in Boston, and it’s kind of nice to see after so many years of him looking miserable everywhere he went
  • Payton Pritchard led the way for Boston with 21 points. He seems to always been the guy hitting open shots to punish the Kings for over-rotating

And that my friends is why silly losses against the Detroits and Charolettes of the league come back to bite you. Kings could swallow this near miss if they had won their bunnies. The 6th spot is total long shot by this point. See you all in the play-in.

Yep. Add games like blowing a 22 point lead to Phoenix or making your free throws at Milwaukee, and it would’ve made a huge difference in the standings.

At this point, the Kings need to just pray they don’t drop to 9th or 10th to avoid a possible one game exit. Lakers and Warriors have been on a roll lately.

Couple the fact that whoever looses the 9/10 game is likely to have the last pick in the lottery. It’s worst case scenario.

Play-in is a bit of a disappointment. However, it looks like it’ll work out good for me with them being on the road in SF for the 1st play-in game, because I’ll be in Disneyland that week. So I won’t miss the game(s).

It just irks me how Fox always shows up for big games, but is aloof and lackadaisical against bad teams.

When Draymond said it was hard to get up for teams like Sacramento a few years ago, you know what? He’d earned the right to say that. They had won multiple rings and would consistently stomp the Kings, with or without the effort.

But just who TF does this team think it is that it doesn’t have to respect its opponents? One playoff series in 17 years and suddenly you’re too good to try against Detroit and Washington? And yet are STILL not good enough to beat them? Arrogant and lazy. And now we’re looking at the possibility of restarting the playoff drought because of that very attitude. Well congrats Fox and Co. You certainly have shown the league EXACTLY what you are.

That was a Kangzian loss.

Joe Mazzulla gave the Kings every opportunity and yet, they tripped on their own feet at the finish line. (Keegan couldn’t secure the rebound, Fox missed his 2 pointer, Keegan missed the put back, Colby Jones fouled, no call. Game)

Sigh. Well, season’s not over, but it sure seems to be a limp not a march to the end.

Next.

With the Rockets losing today, the Kings clinched a play-in spot. How far they get though past the regular season is another question though.

I didn’t. Once they lost the two games to Dallas and lost Monk for the rest of the season, it became more of a longshot to me that they’d hold on to 6th. At this point with only five games remaining, the minimum we can do now is holding on to 7th or 8th and avoid dropping to the 9th or 10th spot.

A high school team in North Dakota tried to pull off the quadruple doable in ’86. With a minute left on the clock, the ground opened up and swallowed the team whole. Then according to eyewitness testimony, the ground belched out a single solitary gym sock.

But that story is a myth because North Dakota only exists on maps.

I think they should shoot their free throws from the 3 point line.

I dunno… improvement? Maybe the NBA gives them a point and a half?

This was one of those rare games where the Kings seems to be a little gun shy when it came to shooting 3s, especially considering they were burying the ones they did take.

Defense and sticking to the offense style that is productive.

Playoff basketball teams do these things.

So much focus on missed shots or shooting so many threes.

Why not talk about zero defensive stops in a game they lost by one point?

Change the culture and focus to one that includes defense as a tool to win games.

The Kings’ “zero defensive stops” somehow managed to keep the Celtics to shooting 43% from the field, 27% from three, and 101 points.

Your wish has been granted. The Kings have changed the culture and focused on one that includes defense as a tool to win games.

Your prize is a team that lost by a point on the road to the best team in the NBA on a SEGABABA.

Over the last 15 games, the Kings’ defensive rating is sixth in the NBA.

It seems that Kings management and the coaching staff have been trying to create a 3-and-D team. And by all indications, it is happening.

Unfortunately the season is 82 games, not 15. It was 1 point because Boston emptied the bench in the closing minutes. Also, NY routed us on FIGABAB.

The Mavs put up 132 on our court, the Spurs put up 129 in our court, G-league Grizzlies put up 111 on our court, the Knicks put up 120 against us. They haven’t shown they can play sustained defense over significant stretches of games. We need to figure out a way to acquire players who can play defense for more than a game or two in a row. Unfortunately with our cap space and lack of flexibility via pick trades, that’s not an easy ask.

I talked about the Kings’ improvement over the last 15 games, upon which you criticized my use of a sample of the latest games. Okay, fine.

Then, instantly forgetting your own criticism, you cherrypicked from an even smaller sample of four games. Pick a lane.

You’re in such a hurry to see only the negative in this team that you instantly contradict yourself.

The Kings have held opposing teams in the last 15 games to 105.6 points.

Over the same 15 games, the Kings have averaged 110.1 points.

In five of those games, the Kings held their opposition under 100 points.

The point of the 15-game sample is to show how the Kings have improved.

It’s undeniable that they have.

They’re playing winning basketball.

You’re are correct. 8-7 over their last 15. If that’s what you call winning basketball. Do your homework next time

15 game sample size. Lol! Since when. Is 15 the gauge of an entire season.
hey buddy. 5 games left. Not 67.

8-7 over that stretch. I believe Monk played most of those games

2 Wins against a Kawhi less Clippers and A Embiid less Sixers Team.

They did beat the Magic, Bucks and Lakers. So essentially they really played 5 games in that stretch of 15 games with teams over .500 that they actually beat.

and really 3. Because they got no shot a winning if Kawhi and Embiid were on the floor 2 of those 5.

So, tell me again about that defensive improvement. When they do it for a full season. lol!

I made it clear that I have been talking about improvement over the last 15 games. You made it clear that you understood that in your reply.

Then you lost your mind sort of a lot.

If you can’t see the improvement by the Kings, just say so. There’s no need for all of the hysterics.

The Kings are a demonstrably winning team over the last 15 games.

That seems to upset you. If you’re a Kings fan, I don’t know why.

You have a habit of discounting Kings wins (or even losses) over teams that are missing a key player or two:

You lost to a New York team missing 2 of its best players.

I guess we should also discount the Mavs two wins over us since we were missing two key players of our own. And the same for the losses to the Knicks and Celtics. So that’s 4 of the 7 losses in the 15 game stretch that we have to discount.

In the last 15 games the Kings have gone from being in the playoffs to relying on other teams falling apart to remain in a play in situation.

The Celtics are broken at the moment. Kings didn’t slow them down at all.

The supposedly east team in basketball had no injuries, played their best lineups, and did not play their worst bench players in the final quarter?

…and they shot horribly…but still beat the Kings who gave all they had,

Agreed, but we’re not a playoff team. We’re a play-in team. Play-in teams don’t do those things….which is why they’re play-in teams.

We also need to acquire defensive players in order to become a defensive team. As of now, none of our core players are very good defenders. Monte definitely has his work cut out this off-season. He has very little wiggle room in which to actually use to improve the roster. Especially if we lose the play-in game at Golden State.

Think of it this way. Despite being a likely play-in team, the Kings get a chance to beat either the Lakers or the Warriors.

After that, we have a decent chance at playing either the Wolves or the Nuggets, teams we match up well against.

It’s the second year of a recovery effort of a team doomed for almost two decades. I like our chances.

I’ve seen every game. I saw the Kings beat the Nuggets at home 123-117.

Then I saw the Kings slaughter the Nuggets at home 135-106.

Not long after that game, the Kings beat the Nuggets in Denver 102-98.

And finally–and this is the part that will make your toes squiggle–the Kings finally lost to Denver in their last game by the score of 117-96.

We match up well against the Nuggets.

Have you seen a game?

Need to shoot 400 to win. That should be the strategy.

Yep. Frankly, it was bad coaching by the Celtics. The opened the door for the Kings to steal one, and it came down to a mid-range shot that Fox makes slightly more than half of the time. A golden opportunity missed.

I think it was great coaching by Joe Mazulla. He had a short handed main line up, and he handed the second unit the reins.

On the other end, Mike Brown was given the opportunity to compete- which was no contendre against the partial starters.

He allowed the Maine Lobsters Bench unit playing time as they gear up for the post season. Last game, Boston had already secured best record in the League status amd home court through out the playoffs – their regular is done. Over. They have the mission to stay healthy but loose. To play Jason Tatum 65 games for post season honors. To scrimmage Porzingas back in shape. That’s about all they have to do the next two weeks. They gave the Kings a chance to win, and the Kings drove all the way back to the one yard line and fumbled the ball at the goal line.. Game Over.

Unless you’re being sarcastic and I am not reading it, I can’t see how Mazulla giving away a big lead in last two minutes and only surviving due to Fox missing a shot he normally makes as good coaching by the Celtics, but I guess we can agree to disagree.

After tonight’s game, I’d be stunned if the Celtics win the championship this year due to the coaching. But yes, it’s only one game

I was being sarcastic. Celtics had 2 starters out and basically let their bench play the 4th quarter, and the Kangz still lost. If Tatum, KP, and Holiday played the 4th, it was would have easily been an easy costing to a double digit win.

Make up your mind.

He kept his starters in a groove but also relatively fresh in a game that is meaningless for their standings, while getting a good luck at the end of rotation guys.

I’d say that is a win-win for Mazulla.

the Celtics regular season is over. OVER. They won Best Record. They have secured home court for the playoffs. They could lose the remainder of their regular season games. Every one of them. Doesn’t change that status.

Okay? Capische? Is that a more clear explanation?

Thus, starters out. Bench in. Let’em play. We can disagree – but that’s good coaching in my book.

I would’t give Mazulla any credit what so ever. He survived by 1 point barely. IMO he blew it as a coach last night. What if Fox made that shot or Keegan tipped it in(or Keegan secured that rebound) or the bias ref would not have swallowed his whistle when Jones was fouled under the basket. Let’s just say luck was on his side this time. Not good coaching.

Dude, I was being sarcastic. The Kings blew a game and them tried to mount a come back against the bench of the Celtics. They stunk up the arena tonight with their play against the Celtics starters.

Mazzula wasn’t worried about seeing his team win by 20 while running his starters in to the ground. The record doesn’t mean anything to them at this point. Just stay crisp and healthy, let the bench get some more minutes and reps.

Meanwhile the Kangz looked like crap most of the game, coach didn’t make adjustments quick enough, and on and on.

I dunno… call me living life with rose colored glasses. Last year was a pleasant surprise where things just fell into place. This year we have faced adversity… a lot more injuries that we don’t have last year. Losing Monk and Huerter down the stretch is not ideal. Yes some dumb losses this year … but those injuries are letting a Keon Ellis shine and grow, something that I do not believe would have happened had we not had the injuries forcing Brown … it’s also giving Davion more play and a chance to play without so much worry he will be yanked…

lyles continues to show himself as valuable… I think we might get to see more Sasha and I hope he plays the way he can… again I think Brown may have played with his confidence a bit with some quick hooks.. all of these let us know where we stand… and am most disappointed in HB not stepping up.. maybe it’s time to Put Lyles in as a starter…we lost two to Dallas one of the Hottest Teams, and losing to NY and Boston on the road is not an embarrassment… let’s Draft DaRon Holmes with a second round pick… and we will grow again next year after finding a free throw psychologist!!

You lost to a New York team missing 2 of its best players. You lost to the end of the Bench Celtics in the 4th. Kings would have lost by 50 if everyone on the Celtics starting lineup played.

Lyles is not a starter on any contending team. Get real. Sasha would see 5 minutes on any contending team.

Keon Ellis is not a starter on any playoff team anywhere.

Kings are not loaded with assets or cap room. Huerter and Barnes are not going to yield you any decent 3 and d, fierce wing player, or second star.

There is a very real chance Monk takes a big bag and goes to start for another team

Which is what this team really needs.

This is the team they have

Sabonis is a regular season player whose weaknesses will continue to be exposed in the playoffs/playin

This team is realistically 3 impact players from really being a contender.

While the Lakers, Clips and Dubs will continue or start to decline next year

Houston and Spurs will probably be better than the Kings as soon as next year. Both teams loaded with cash, assets and picks.

Thats real talk

I was wondering the same thing. While I can’t say this dude is totally wrong on any of his points his lack of acknowledging any tiny positive things about the Kings paints him as doomer to me. Even if we don’t make it out of the play-ins the team is playing so much better than they did prior to the last 17 years we experienced prior to last season is a massive improvement.

The season is not over yet and the potential to play themselves into the 8th slot is still possible. Regardless of whether they make it past the play-ins this season or not doesn’t mean that they will sink into the depths of mediocracy in future seasons is a given.

I sure as hell like our current position a lot more than I did in seasons past. The one thing I know for sure is that the book on the King’s future is far from being written

As for me, I’ve been a Kings fan since the late eighties. My expectations for this team are that they continue playing past the regular season. They’re a small-market team, so aside from that, I hope to see entertaining basketball, knowing that there’s a chance that the Kings can advance past any competition in a seven-game series.

Aside from that, this is just basketball. Basketball is simply . . . basketball. You talk about real talk? We’re talking about . . . basketball. An orange ball that two teams want to put through a hoop. In the end, it’s nothing. It changes no one’s lives. All the players get paid. All of the fans get their paychecks.

We choose to root for the Kings for a wide variety of reasons, and that has meaning for those people, including me. But in the end, it’s just a sport.

That’s real talk.

A lot of what you say sounds hysterical. The Kings would’ve lost by 50? Take a breather.

Expect more success to come . Don’t feel like apologizing because they aren’t a serious NBA Championship contender . I knew that in September .

I think the vast majority of us knew the Kings would not be a serious contender this season. I seem to recall a consensus that the Kings could be a better team this season, but not achieve the same results as last season. Here we are with 5 games to go and an outside chance of finishing with a record equal to (or even exceeding) last season’s record.
I’ll take that…for now.

Boy did you hit the nail on the head. I coached basketball for 47 years. IMO it’s the best sport bar none. I’ve won championships and in some cases lost more than I won in a season. I was told that those playing against me hated me but those playing for me loved me. Can’t ask for anything more. Loved every player I had. Sometimes were we not on the same page but things worked out. Every player whether we won or lost worked their butts off and for that I am extremely grateful. The same goes for the Sacramento Kings. Every player is a professional and loves the game no matter how much they make. To give them negative vibes plays on their minds because I will bet each King’s player reads these comments. Win or lose they all are working their butts off. I love being a King’s fan. GO KINGS!!!

Well if they are reading this then same here. I believe in these boys. I haven’t been a fan as long as you have but 5/14/1998 I believe, changed my life. The CWebb trade. Been down since then.

These boys don’t realize how good they are and the loyal fan base they have backing them. In probably the toughest division in the NBA and they are fighting. Should they come out swinging every night, absolutely. That’s what contenders do. They are trying and kind of holding their own. They’re not bottom feeders, they’re not at the top of the standings, but those dudes are right there in the middle of NBA chaos. It’s funny. This is our team. They are literally out there fighting for it and I’m here for it.

This team has made it to the playoffs once in 17 years. The end of this season has shown a clear decline for a number of reasons.

Lets lose a player to free agency and bring up some more G league roster filler to replace them.

Run it back for another 20 years!

I have seen this team win and in a dominant way. Small market..who cares.

Speaking only for myself: it isn’t that the bar is set low. Divac left a very weak and flawed roster. It takes a while—and some luck—to build a team that wins consistently and can contend. So we optimists see improvement and are hopeful that more is coming. But, given the mess inherited, we are more patient, less negative about what we have now.

Quit telling people how to be a fan. And quit attacking people who don’t have your vision of how to be a fan. Isn’t there a site rule about attacking people rather than argue against the things they say?

I love the Kings. I’ve been a fan since they got here but I see this season as a failure to build. A window of opportunity not taken. I see flawed players and coaching when it comes to playoff success-which is what I care about.

So, I see some improvement but overall worry that the Kings don’t get what wins and will never take the next step. This season has only confirmed their weaknesses.

So, regular season success is fine but I’m here for championship contention-

The thing is the Kings weren’t that good last year and still mostly same this year so I’m not sure where expectations would come from that they would do consistently what good teams do consistently. All pretty good teams that evolve into contenders have a couple years of growing pains, hopefully we become one that breaks through to contender status. As of now we still have a team that can surprise you by beating anyone in the league and also losing any game.

Lakers win so we’re officially in 9th. Pack it up, make some moves and get ready for next season. When the conference is healthy, this is where we are. Need to be honest about that or this team isn’t going anywhere.
