Depends. If it’s an outsized offer the Kings are pretty much screwed, though they could offer a quick non-match in return for something. Otherwise the Kings could grind it out for the entire 72 hours, which would put Atlanta in the position of not doing something else with that money and then having the well dry up.
If McNair is smart, he sits and waits until the clock nearly hits zero. Make ATL sweat it out while other guards get picked up.

I love the idea of holding out and tying up their cash while everything plays out. I recall that was a concern for us recently though I can’t remember who we were chasing. Been a hell of a year!
It is the one way to get compensation quickly from ATL. Just sit and wait until they offer something you want so you put pen to paper.

If they front load the contract it will remind me of the Isaiah Thomas free agency, when the Suns front loaded the contract. Foolish back then not to match and even dumber in hindsight. Can’t let assets walk for nothing. Worse case scenario you can trade him in a year.

If you have to choose between one or the other, keeping Bogdan and trading Buddy seems like a no-brainer.
Right, but if they match for Bogi, every team will know they will be desperate to trade Buddy.
But if more than one team has serious interest in Buddy, that evens out.
Then I would argue a new market for Buddy opens, bringing in new players
If possible with suitors. I have doubts competitive teams wont look elsewhere, especially early in the market. Or how moveable he is generally.
Said this on a previous thread but I don’t see why ATL wouldn’t force the Kings hand. Granted they are being rash and have a number of holes for the hopeful playoff push, so time is a factor in FA. Still a smart team would do this. A sign and trade post the Bucks deal seemed very much at risk in my view.
Couldn’t they also spend the 72 hours trying to trade Buddy? I feel like leverage is being lost for the Kings here…
ATL doesn’t have to offer anything back in trade. They can fit him in their cap. It is match or walk for the Kings.
Yep. The narrow needle to thread would be if Atlanta liked three players and have two players money, time would be of the essence on knowing whether they landed Bogi. It might be worth something to them to get Sac. out of the way quickly.

Rumors about Whiteside to the Kings? That would be a NO for me.

Ok I guess I am the contrarian here. I’ll panic if he gets some sort of a 3/$60M deal.
But two of our biggest issues the last few years (or decades) has been shot blocking and rebounding. Whiteside is a situational player who you have to pull against certain lineups. But if there are two things he is good at, it is protecting the rim (2.9 per game, 8.4 block %) and rebounding (13.5 per game, 23.6% rebound rate).
If we can get him for something like 1-2 years at $7-8M per year with a team option, he’d actually make a fantastic weapon to have. And he would a new dynamic to the team that we haven’t had for awhile.
You want to really tank? Sign Whiteside. He will give absolutely zero fucks about anything other than his counting stats.
I want him nowhere even close to a team that is trying to rebuild and Identify a positive culture.
He is so wrong for so many reasons –
I’ve told this story before, but I was at the practice facility when he was a rookie. Practice ended and Samuel Dalembert offered to work 1-on-1 with Whiteside. Whiteside just waved him off with a towel and left the court. Told you everything you needed to know about the cat right there.
I think this is valid. However, I will also point out that his rookie season was about 9-10 years ago. No doubt he was very immature and he bounced between several teams and had to play for two teams overseas before getting back into the NBA on a 10 day contract.
I am not even going to pretend he’s a veteran role model like VC was (and even that is a massive understatement). But I’m also not sure it’s fair to hold a story about an immature 21 year old against a 30 year old player who went through a lot to carve out a space in the league.
I’ve seen nothing in his game to convince me that he’s worth having around. And the fact that he’s probably available for the MLE when you look at this raw stats sort of enforces that point for me.
One of my least favorite players for this organization at this time.

I’d be happy offering the full MLE (9.5M/yr) in a one or two year deal. Anything more, which I’m not even sure we could afford, should be a hard pass.
Whiteside does have some impact numbers, as I check.

Neither one of those guys is a reason not to sign Plumlee. Plumlee and Dedmon might be a reason not to sign Okafor. Hell, common sense might be a reason not to sign Okafor.
Don’t forget Isaiah Stewart. I’m assuming they don’t care much about roster construction at the moment. They’re just looking for what they think are good values.
