The Sacramento Kings have crushed the NBA Draft so far, and taking an upside swing in Jahmi’us Ramsey at 43 is phenomenal.
Ramsey is one of the youngest players (19 years old) and best shooters in the draft. During his freshman season at Texas Tech, he averaged 15.0 points while shooting 42.6 percent from three on 5.2 attempts per game.
Jahmi’us Ramsey also is working with some seriously impressive athleticism that should be a force in the open court alongside De’Aaron Fox.
There is some positional overlap with Ramsey being just 6’4″, likely limiting him to the shooting guard role, but he could be molded to eventually take over the Buddy Hield role.
If Ramsey can manage to improve his shot selection and reach his potential defensively, Sacramento may have just landed a first-round talent at pick 43.
Jahmi’us Ramsey joins Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State) and Robert Woodard (Mississippi State) on his way to Sacramento.
The next selection for the Kings is at pick 52.
It’s as if someone did their homework and didn’t rely on the deep thoughts of Peja Stojakovic and Bobby Jackson.
Damn son, that’s some mighty fine draft picks.
Jerry, after Jahmi’us hits a dagger three:
“HOT DAM-sey, Jahmi’us Ramsey!”
Fantastic! Welcome to Sacramento, Jahmi’us!
Two additional thoughts:
1) Love the BPA and modern outlook by Monte. Three guys who can shoot, with the length and athleticism to switch positions. The Kings may finally be joining the modern NBA.
2) Between Halliburton and Ramsey, Buddy has to be on the way out, no matter what happen with Bogdanovic. Maybe not immediately, but sometime this season.
Showcase him, don’t have him run the point, and his value will bounce back. No reason to shove him out the door for a ham sandwich.
two days ago, Vlade could have gotten a nice roast beef sandwich with a little wasabi and some cash considerations on the side
That sounds fantastic, if I’m being honest. The sandwich, not Divac.
I’m holding out for a good MLT, where the mutton is nice and lean…
And what about the bogi trade….
It’s only MOSTLY dead.
I have been advocating for them to take a bunch of wings with upside with all these second round picks for a few years now and they finally did it. The proof is in the pudding as they say but in terms of draft strategy I think they are taking the right approach.
Yeah, that’s what 2nd rounders are for. Take several shots and eventually you’ll find a decent player or two to add to your depth. Glad to see the new FO actually value trade/draft assets.
Yeah the weird thing about this draft for me as a Kings fan is that it was pretty chalky but they actually took players I kind of liked and it wasn’t super eventful. I’ll be honest it felt great.
And in this case, the second-rounders were on the board in the first round for a lot of people whose business it is to know about these things. McNair threaded the needle beautifully.
I agree it seems like he did a really solid job.
Any word on the trade for the number 53 pick? I see it reported as going to Houston
I’m willing to bet that’s for our old friend cash considerations.
Martin Jr. to Houston for Harden. Wow!
Future 2nd apparently
With the state of the Rockets, that could be pretty solid
Wow that’s actually better than I was expecting!
Finally broke on Twitter – we get the Lakers 2nd round pick next season (2021) and also got $1M in cash.
Basically, push the asset to next season where it should be close to identical. No issue with this.
And we just got a new K-Mart lol. At least he will have some upsideson of a #1 overall pick from 2000, so he already should know about being a professional, though it seems his journey will be way different from his dad’snonguaranteed, bottom five pick in the second round, big chip on his shoulder
Refreshing to not draft three PFs and an undersized PG.
Comment of the evening right there
So much potential with the new guys, and their introduction to the NBA will be managed by Lose Walton. I guess if they’re still functional players in the spring, we’ll know we’re in good shape.
Don’t have a ton to add on Ramsey, as he wasn’t at the top of my radar, but I will say that the three non-humble models (not influenced by actual / mock draft order):
Original: 5.2 (#26 overall)
Modern: 9.7 (#10 overall)
Positional: 5.5 (#29 overall)
Even setting aside the Modern model, that would basically say he’s a rotational bench player with the potential to be a fringe starter. Not a bad gamble for the late 40s.
In terms of statistical profile:
Per 40: 19-5-3 with 1.7 steals and 0.9 blocks
Efficiency: 1.1 A/T, 55% true shooting (44% / 64% / 43% splits), 26% usage
Impact: 6.7 BPM (great for a freshman wing), 3.3 win shares, 11 net rating
He only shot 53% at the rim, which isn’t great, but he did hit a 43% of his threes and 38% of his two point jumpers.
For some of his Synergy numbers:
73rd percentile on offense overall including:
91st percentile catch and shoot
88th percentile off screens (low sample)
87th percentile off handoffs (low sample)
84th percentile in isolation including passes
And he’s 6’4″ with a 6’6″ wingspan, so very similar in size to Buddy Hield, but lighter at 195 pounds. Seems like more of a combo guard; however, his playmaking numbers are poor for that. Meaning he may need to prove he can stick as a SG if he can’t get a better feel for running and offense and is limited to situational self-creation.
Again, this is all based on the data – would need to watch some more film to come back with additional options, but still wanted to share as I am sure a lot of fans here probably don’t know a ton about Ramsey.
thanks
Just watch some highlights of his and thought this is a great pick. His defense and passing are suspects but he’s also 19 years old so I can see how he could end up a lot better than now
Heck yeah
