8 Questions Heading Into The Sacramento Kings Season

From Zach LaVine’s hot hand to Sabonis’ quicker release and Nique Clifford’s breakout, here are eight preseason takeaways only true Kings sickos will appreciate.

Because I’ve got a problem (and I’m a sicko—shoutout to Deuce and Mo’s dope new swag btw), I poured over every minute of Kings preseason footage. A few things really stood out. Most is good, with a couple of concerning trends I hope don’t linger into the season.

So, here we go: 8 questions heading into the season.

1. Can Zach LaVine Keep It Going?

Zach LaVine kind of killed it in the preseason. In four games, he averaged 16 points on 57% shooting, 46% from deep, with 4 assists and 3 rebounds in just 24 minutes per game. I’ve been hyping him up as a guy whose stock is way too low, and I think the reality of his game is better than the perception.

2. What’s Up with Domas’ Shot?

Domantas Sabonis’ shot has been… interesting. The release is noticeably faster, which is cool since he’s traditionally taken his time lining up the seams. But here’s the thing: he’s historically only taken (and made) threes when dared to. A quicker release could mean two things:

More Volume: If he increases his attempts it could be a game-changer, if they go in. This team needs more spacing, and Domas proving himself as a reliable shooter would be huge.

Drawing Defenders: If defenders start guarding him on the perimeter, his elite passing could unlock even better ball movement. With capable cutters, this could help fix the ball movement issues that fell off a cliff after the LaVine trade last season.

3. Dennis Schroder: Rust or Regression?

Dennis Schroder’s preseason was… rough. In his first three games, he averaged 5 points on 27% shooting, 0% from deep, with 3 rebounds and fewer than 2 assists per game. Yikes.

He did show signs of life in the final preseason game against the Los Angeles Lakers with dropping 25 points on solid efficiency, but is this a sign of regression or just a case of not caring about preseason? He did just turn 32 in September, so Father Time could be creeping in. I’m choosing to believe he’ll show up when it matters, maybe not Game 1, but at least by Game 11.

4. What Role Is Nique Clifford Going to Have?

Nique Clifford has been a revelation. In four preseason games, he averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal on 48% shooting in nearly 26 minutes per game. That playing time is a strong indicator of trust from the coaching staff.

With Domantas Sabonis and Keegan Murray both out to start the year, Nique’s consistent minutes and role in the rotation make it easy to imagine him as the sixth man, or even a stealth starter. He’s shown he can swing between the 1 and 3, score, play-make, and defend on the perimeter. Could he secure a starting role sooner rather than later?

5. Can Dario Saric Be A Key Rotational Player?

I’m a Saric guy, what can I say? I was high on him in the 2014 draft, loved his season with the Dubs in 2023-24, and recently wrote about him being more than just a throw-in in the Jonas Valančiūnas trade.

In the preseason, he hit 7 threes over three games on 55% shooting in just 19 minutes per game. He also looked surprisingly mobile for someone who essentially took a full season off. With our front court depth looking shaky, Saric’s shooting and experience could be a sneaky asset.

6. Is Doug Scared of the Vets?

Doug Christie talks a big game about full-court pressure, but it seems like only the young guys are buying in. Politics and trade value aside, there’s an opportunity here for Doug to bench a vet or two—say, DeMar DeRozan—and inject players like Nique Clifford or Keon Ellis into the lineup.

These younger guys bring the heat, ball movement, and pace Doug wants. It’s time to see if he’s willing to make the tough calls.

7. Can The Undrafted Guys Play A Key Role?

Our undrafted players have shown flashes:

Dylan Caldwell (Center): In 11 minutes per game, he averaged 4 points and 5 boards.

Daeqwon Plowden (Wing): In 8 minutes per game, he put up 4 points, hit a three, and chipped in a couple of steals over four games.

The numbers don’t jump off the page, but the energy, grit, and defensive intensity these guys bring could fill some key team needs.

8. Can Drew Eubanks Lowkey Ball?

Drew Eubanks has shown some nice touch around the basket, a bit of a post-game bag, and the kind of pace Doug Christie loves. With other bigs on the roster still unproven, Eubanks could be more than serviceable until one of the younger guys is ready to step up. That vet minimum contract might just turn out to be a stealth value deal.

Wrap It Up, B

  • Does Domas keep letting that thing fly? Will ball movement and spacing improve?
  • Is Nique Clifford our Day 1 sixth man—or even a starter?
  • Is Saric officially back?
  • Do any of the undrafted guys crack the main roster?
  • Will Doug bench the vets in favor of hungry young players?

Time will tell, but we’’ll be here clocking it and delivering the goods all season long.

Great read. Much more compelling than my eight questions:
Why?
Why??
Why???
WHY????
WHY?!?!?
WHY?!?!?!
WHY?!?!?!?
And I’ll yield the floor to Nancy for the final question:

My questions:

How many games will the broadcast team continue to shill the defensive focus when the numbers clearly show the defense sucks?

Will the broadcast team only shill for Domas and Zach for all-star nods or will they also try to include DDR?

With no Jae on the team who will introduce the rookies to the refs?

I’m getting the feeling that as this season trudges along we are going to realize how incredibly redundant it is to have Schröder, Westbrook and Monk on the same team, let alone on the floor at the same time. They are going to provide plenty of highlights with equal amounts of face palms

I’m gonna call them the Tricks and Bricks Trifecta.

It’s time to see if he’s (Doug) willing to make the tough calls.

I’m not totally convinced that this will be 100% his call. He’s a HC with less than 1 full season of experience, and we all know Vivek will Vivek.

It’s likely Vivek would funnel instructions through Perry, but I suspect that the Kings will want to feature the vets for trades as the season progresses.

Can’t do that if they’re on the bench (unless you’re trying to protect their value, which probably isn’t the kind of 4D chess the Kings brass is capable of playing).

I know I have written a lot (too much) already but I notice that there is no season prediction thread.
Las Vegas has Sacramento at 32.5 wins. What say YOU?
Put me down for 35 wins. Just in the sweet spot for a not great draft pick and just outside the top 10.

As for your questions:
Drew Eubanks is this season’s Richaun Holmes. Endearing in his own way (I really enjoyed Dr. Holmes input), but ultimately, 3rd string on a good team.

SSSS? (SRSLY some Saric Stuff?). This team needs rebounders and defenders in their frontcourt. I like that he can hit the 3, but I don’t see that as a strong need for this squad, who play nothing like Steve Kerr’s Warriors.

Doug will play the vets. How do I know? Because vets demand playing time. Not all vets, you say? Well, DeMar DeRozan led the NBA in minutes two seasons ago, at 37.8 mpg (2979) and last season it dropped all the way to… 35.9 mpg (2768), which was the most for Sacramento behind Lavine and Fox. He’s not going to 20 mpg. Not. going. to. happen. Oh, and Dennis Schröder is your big acquisition and PG, so he’s playing. And Zach Lavine is your best and most efficient scorer, so he’s playing (if he stays healthy). Sabonis and Keegan both averaged 34 mpg last season. And to top it off – Russell Westbrook just joined and I will bet dollars to doughnuts that someone promised him significant playing time to come to Sacramento. He will get minutes.

I’ll take the under on the Vegas odds. I swear their win projection was higher a few weeks back. Didn’t they have them at 35 or 36 wins?

I agree with you on Westbrook getting minutes. I’m picking up Russell and Beal in Washington vibes. It was kind of a forgettable one off season in D.C. where the wiz mustered just 34 wins despite those two putting up monster empty numbers.

Not planning to watch any of the team’s games this season, probably not any NBA games. Just can’t savor this team’s drama under Vivek. Will rely on the folks here to keep me abreast of goings-on with the team and the league. My Kangz fandom had morphed into just simple TKH fandom.

It’s good Domas has sped up the release….the old way was too slow & drawn out. But think it’s almost gotten too quick now, like he’s just flicking it up quick (a la Shawn Marion) and hoping it goes in. Looks like a weird shot, like he’s not taking the time to actually shoot properly (with a full gather, jump and release.) Hoping for the best, but he may have to go a bit back to the other way he was shooting it.

this team has a lot of questions heading into the year, yet few answers. I’m predicting they win 28 games this year. I ain’t drinking the Kool-Aid again.

Some observations from Game 1 on this post:

  • Zach LaVine not only showed up offensively–at least in the first half–but he moved without the ball, AND played some impressive defense. Both are going to be keys to his success, and the team’s success.
  • Hopeful Domas’s improved mid-range shot will open up the offense even further. We need movement. Last night there were several nice plays where the point guard and shooting guard moved without the ball and received passes (one from DeMar) for easy lay-ups. We need alot more of this, throughout the game.
  • Everybody please stop hating on DeMar DeRozan. He had 9 assists in addition to getting clutch buckets. Yes, the game slows down when he goes iso-, but used selectively, it’s very effective.
  • Kings have not been a good 3-point shooting team for many years. Fewer but better quality 3’s mixed in with more defensively-generated transition baskets.
  • No mention of Monk in this article but he looked great last night, and also seemed to be working hard on defense. Hopefully Doug’s tutelage applies not only to LaVine but also Monk.
