The Sacramento Kings are re-signing Doug McDermott for one season, according to a new report.
Free agent Doug McDermott has agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million deal to return to the Sacramento Kings, Mark Bartelstein and Andy Shiffman of @PrioritySports tell ESPN. McDermott will enter his 12th NBA season after shooting 44% from 3 in 42 Kings games in 2024-25. pic.twitter.com/J6cMwmupxJ
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) July 21, 2025
The 11-year veteran averaged 3.5 points on .472% from the field and .436% from three last season for the Kings. He played in 42 games and started in 3 games. McDermott has never averaged more than 24 minutes per game and has started in 97 of his 697 total games played in the NBA. The Kings are the 8th team the 6’6’’ forward has played on.
His best season occurred in 2020-21 with the Indiana Pacers when he averaged 13.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
Wow, I’m…………underwhelmed. Sigh
Is he dating Anjali or something? Because why else do you give a guy $3.5M to jack 30′ jumpers in the garbage seconds of a 4th quarter blowout?
$3.5M is the minimum salary for a 10+ year player.
As far as end-of-the-bench guys go, he’s fine. He can get hot enough offensively that he might even help claw back from the wrong end of a blowout once a season and win the 12th Man of the Year award.
Yeah I get it’s the vet minimum for a guy of his…age. I’d just much prefer to give the league minimum for $1.2M to one of those dudes from summer league to ride the end of the pine. This comes from a team that needed to shave a few million by dumping JV so they could sign Schröder and they now hand out vet minimum deals to dudes long in the the tooth? If they are trying to be the oldest team in the league they have a long ways to go to catch the Clips.
I agree. I would rather we go get Vanderbilt. Defense over offense is what we need right now. Still young enough to fit Perry’s scheme. One of the best defenders in the league. It would cost you less than half the MLE and the rest you can use what ever you want. Not a Westbrook or Simmons. We already have Markelle Fultz who IMO can handle the backup point guard position. And we get read of Saric. Vanderbilt could come in anytime you needed defense and do a really good job. His motor is high and he never quits. Would be an ideal fit along with Issac Jones. Jones does the heavy inside stuff and Van plays the perimeter although he is a good rebounder. No brainier.
Fulton was signed only through the end of the 24-25 season. He is currently an unrestricted free agent, so we don’t “already have” him.
We should. Go get the guy.
Jack
Fultz is terrible.
So all the talk of focus on tough Defense is just more talk . Same sermon different preacher .
Perry is building a juggernaut, one building block at a time.
He’s building a thingamajigg…
One brick, two bricks, three and 32 wins
When I read this I thought, okay, why tie up the 3 million now?
My next thought was he is going to be a $ balancer in a trade.
i will be surprised if he’s here at the start of the season.
I don’t believe any newly signed free agents can be traded until Dec. 15th.
It’s doesn’t matter who they will bring in for the 11-15 spots. They still have a rotten core that doesn’t fit well. Until that is changed, 40 wins is probably the ceiling.
Perry’s free agency activity is… puzzling. Signing Dennis (the MEHnace) Schröder and now McDerMEHt. Going after Kuminga and Simmons. And apparently setting up Keon’s departure next year as a UFA. Not really feeling any immaculate vibes here…
The objective is to be MEHdiocre.
Kings fans: I wish we’d just tank and reset the roster…
Monkey paw: *curls*
Interesting how the agents didn’t mention how much of the contract is guaranteed. Hopefully that information comes out soon
In other news:
Tautvydas Sabonis — brother of Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis — has been named as the new head coach for the @LondonLions* at just 33.
Sabonis will now team up with the Lions’ president from Boston (Lenz Balan) as the team returns to EuroCup play this season.

*London Lions are a British professional basketball team based in Stratford, East London, England, and compete in the Super League Basketball (SLB).
I thought this was relevant to re-post in this thread. If in fact McDermott has a fully guaranteed one year deal, he basically has a no trade clause. I can’t imagine Perry would be this dumb and am hoping Doug’s deal is fully unguaranteed as a result. Hat tip to NorCalKingsFan for verifying this.
Via Spotrac:
So if true, McDermott has to agree to any trade. Brilliant move, Perry…just brilliant.
FWIW, Taurean Prince re-signed with the Bucks in a similar manner that would have qualified for the same unofficial no-trade clause. He has reportedly waived it. I hope someone in Sac media asks Perry about this. Hell, I just hope Perry is actually aware of this.

Does the length of the contract matter? Doug signed a 1 year, versus Prince signing a 2 year.
A two year, with an option for the second year, also qualifies for that type of “no-trade clause.” I had to look it up. I think it’s more common than we might realize. Isn’t that what LBJ has basically done for the past few years or so? It is also why LBJ is now trade eligible and rumors are swirling, since he picked up his PO.
Again, it only kicks in if a player re-signs with the same team in UFA. It doesn’t apply to a guy like Eubanks who also signed a one year deal. Weird little wrinkle of a rule.
So if Doug signed a 1 year deal then, then he wouldn’t have the no-trade clause?
No, it applies to both re-signing for one year or two years with a second year option.
Ah. I am sure he would love to accept a trade out of Basketball Hell.
That would imply that the Kings were the only one willing to give him a contract, which very well may be the case.
Exactly. Got his money and likely will be moved. Good job by his agent.
The Perry regime, ladies and gentlemen! Can’t wait for the bobblehead night.
We need another courtside vomit excorcism.
I’ll hapilly volunteer if y’all help set up a GoFundRik so I can pay the flight, courtside tickets and Zing vodka to induce the acid reflux required.
I volunteer and will just take the ticket. Lol. I’ll provide transportation. Will also buy my own booze. Lol
I thought we were friends?!?
calling LaBradford… your credit card is needed….
LOL. Oldie but goodie.
In Perry’s defense, Max and Nique appear like they will end up being really good picks.
All Perry had to do in terms of signings was sign a cheap stop gap PG instead of Dennis and the offseason would have been fine (stealth tank). The tank is unintentionally still in tact, just more expensive.
My hope is VivPerry realize the during the season that the west is too loaded and the playoffs are not attainable and they trade every tradeable core player in season and aide the tank.
If they haven’t figured out that this roster won’t be competitive, I doubt they ever will
“if we can just ad another washed up vet!!!”
I’ll reserve my evaluation of the draft until I see these guys play against NBA talent. I don’t necessarily think Perry should get bonus points for drafting old rookies with a better chance to contribute day 1, but less upside.
I’m with you. To point to summer league as evidence that the Kings had a good draft is far too premature. By all accounts both Keegan Murray and Davion Mitchell had better summer leagues (both got MVP) than Nique and Maxi and they sure as hell haven’t altered the course of the Kings.
Donte Greene’d
Doratio Kane!
Fair enough. I’m buying up all the land on Nique and Maxime island.
I thought it was all about building a defensive team focus . Guess not .

I can’t help it, I’m starting to dislike him already.
The fanbase responds –

You’re just starting? I disliked him the moment Vivek pulled him out of his posterior orifice the day after the season ended.
I was naive and wanted to give him a fair chance.
It doesn’t matter. The organization has been a poop sandwich for years, and will continue to be one for a while. At least we had the 22-23 season!
These are fun….
Getting off to a bad start would be a blessing in disguise. Show that the team isn’t competitive and force moves to be made. I hate rooting for the team to lose, It just might be the only way for The Dismissive Little Chap to see that major changes at the top of the roster need to happen.
That will likely result in Christie getting fired and the beginning of the Woodson era. The little Chap’s dismissiveness limit is extremely large
Firing Christie would put the dismissive little dipshit in an odd position – having to discard one of the glory-era showpieces. Even Vlade, with his astounding level of stupidity and incompetence, wasn’t actually fired but instead “voluntarily stepped down”. With the HC, though, I don’t think “voluntarily stepping down” would work. I do agree that Doug will be fired in the not-too-distant future – he’s been put into an impossible situation – it’ll just be interesting to see Vivek try to own it.
Doug’s downfall in Sac will be because of the roster. I think he could be a decent coach, but the sub-par roster will reflect on his record and question his abilities as a coach. We all know that Vivek gets squirmy in his seat when he thinks the team should contend for a title, not realizing that the 10th seed doesn’t come with a title.
Totally agree that the roster will be Doug’s downfall. Not sure how to grade his coaching abilities, and whether he could be a decent coach elsewhere, given that this disorganized roster is all that we’ve seen him work with so far.
I will look at effort and execution. If the players look disengaged and can’t run the basic schemes, then it’s a failure. I don’t expect many wins because the talent is sub-par and they don’t fit.
Doug made his own bed. He thought that being a Vivek shill would be the shortest route to a HC position, and he was right. But now he’s coaching a team “built” in the image of Vivek. Surprise, surprise.
Not bad.
I’m a fan of PerVek myself.
PerVek MatinaDivé
I prefer Peradive.
The Clips have put together the definition of “Super Team, just old.”
Harden
Leonard
CP3
Beal
Don’t forget Brook Lopez, Nic Batum, Patty Mills, and Bogi!
“Super old team, just mold.”
And still better than the Kings.
They Might get a total of 82 games out of them… combined.
I erased this comment*
(*Adamsite beat me to it! Again!)
To be honest, what are the Kings doing, its like they are in a row boat with one oar, drifting around in kind of a circle making no particular progress
Why resign the aging corpse of McDermott, an overpay for Schroeder when no one else was really going to sign me for anything more than a one year deal
Why can’t the front office ever take a flyer on some other teams cast off players to see if they would thrive with game time here, no they’d rather bring in a washed up vet to weigh down the bench
Last years roster at seasons end didn’t work, so I (unwisely to date) figured well they’d make some moves to improve it, nope they are going to run it back
Some promising draft picks, but at best we have to solid rotation players
Is there a plan with Ellis and Murray or are they going to screw that up and have them leave or leave without getting anything in value for them
Well at least in Ellis’ case it seems Perry has already set things in motion to have him leave next year for nothing in return. I’m happy for Ellis, actually, that he’ll get to escape from Basketball Hell. I’m hoping that Keegan will soon get to also.
I guess all I can say is why?
