The Sacramento Kings are hiring Monte McNair, the assistant general manager of the Houston Rockets, as their new head of basketball operations, according to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic. McNair was one of the three candidates the Kings reportedly interviewed in Northern California this week. The others were Sachin Gupta of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Wes Wilcox, formerly of the Atlanta Hawks.
McNair joined the Rockets in 2007, when Daryl Morey was promoted to general manager. Morey was promoted to the Rockets’ assistant GM in 2018 after serving as the team’s vice president of basketball operations for the three previous years. Since then, Morey and McNair have worked closely with the coaching staff to build an analytics-driven team in Houston.
It’s unclear what the power structure of the Kings’ basketball operations will look like even with McNair in place, but there were rumblings earlier this week that Gupta would also be brought into the front office. Kings legends Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic previously held the two highest basketball operations positions within organization. Both Divac and Stojakovic resigned from their positions with the team in August.
