The Kings Herald Show is back with a few bits of Kings news to discuss during the slowest month of the NBA calendar.
Listen to Jerry Reynolds, Will Griffith, and Tony Xypteras break down the Donovan Mitchell rumors, Keegan Murray’s injury, Matthew Dellavedova’s arrival, recent NBA rule changes, and answer a few listener questions before Jerry closes the show with some words about his friend, NBA great, and civil rights icon –– Bill Russell.

As usual, great stuff, gents. I was having a hell of a time trying to wake up today, and the podcast really did then trick. You cover so much ground, the tangents are great, and there’s always a ton of sharp insight from each of you. And during the summer doldrums, no less!
All of a sudden I’m worried about Keegan Murray.
Nothing better than hoops talk in August . Especially, with these men . Loved the Russell thoughts from Jerry . Very touching .
Re: Play-ins–getting teams to buy into striving for the play-in, rather than tanking:
Maybe if each NBA playoff matchup wasn’t a series but was rather a ‘win 1 game or go home’, then teams would be more into the play-ins.
In a series, the more stacked team will win probably 99.9% of the time to advance to the next round, but if it’s a one game playoff then there’s probably more belief by the underdog team that they can advance and do something in the playoffs.
Why reward mediocrity? Play a whole season and win a ton of games and still have to prove yourself against a team that had a sloppy year? No thanks.
The Timberpuppies were .561 at 46-36. The clipped Clippers scratched and fought and ended up .512 at 42-40. They had to defend their records against a 36-46 (.439) Swamp Bird team and a 34-48 (.415) Popovich team. That just ain’t right. If you are an embarrassment like Vivek’s Kings and you try and manufacture an excuse for 16 playoff-less seasons by making the Play-In a thing – shame on you (he is shameless, though). If this were a 4 game cluster, sure I see that – but we are playing a 46 win team in the same series as a 34 win team. Just ain’t right. Even if it were the Kings. Maybe, especially if it were Vivek’s Kings.
I agree. I can envision a high record 7th ranked team having two bad games thanks to a COVID case or a rolled ankle to a star and they get knocked out by sub .500 team who caught a lucky break. That sub .500 team, who is 20+ games below the #1 seed, then gets rolled in 4 straight to a #2 seed. Who wants to see that?
I’d bet the NBA shit cans the idea once a large tv friendly market team gets knocked out by lowly small market and ratings then suffer.
Q: “That sub .500 team, who is 20+ games below the #1 seed, then gets rolled in 4 straight to a #2 seed. Who wants to see that?”
A: Vivek
Let’s not kid ourselves. Many Kings fans would be over the moon.
I can’t listen to the pod, can anyone tell me what the Davion stuff is about? Please and thank you ????
Just woke up and realized it said Donovan.. don’t work graveyard kids
I’m sorry, I can’t let this amazing idea go until I know Jerry has heard it.
My question for the Legend Jerry Reynolds:
Can you please open a barbershop in Sacramento. Preferably downtown near the arena?
Kings themed, TV’s with sports on, kings highlights playing, skilled barbers, high end shop. You know what it would be called.
Most popular barbershop in sacramento day one, I have no doubt.
Seems a great project for Will Griffith (barber ). Name – Hippity Hop to the Kings Barbershop .
I’ll make an amateur celebrity appearance!
Listening to the Old Fashioned Three. Lol Jerry’s comment about Spencer Hawes had me rolling.
The Athletic is not overly impressed with the Kings. Say they have improved, but behind Utah, Charlotte, Wizards, and just ahead of the Pistons.
Looks like they have them 12th best in the West. Likely to move up to 11th if/when Utah trades Mitchell. Which sounds about right. That probably puts their error bars somewhere around the 9-13 range.
I think Jerry was self-aware when he partially explained why he predicted them to win more games than they did last year and why he probably will over-predict their wins again. He said it’s because he’s a homer and a fan of the Kings. I see a lot of imo rather generous win predictions on Twitter, and I think this explains it. The predictors are fans of the Kings and homers for them. I’m wondering about myself though. I find myself getting more and more negative as it becomes more clear this is pretty much the roster. I’m sure I’m a fan so not sure why I never seem to buy into the offseason belief.
