The Sacramento Kings announced on Tuesday that they have extended a Qualifying Offer to Terence Davis, making Davis a restricted free agent.
This move was an expected formality. Not giving the QO to Davis would have made him an unrestricted free agent. Even if the Kings have zero interest in retaining Davis, it’s simply smart asset management to provide the QO. It opens up the opportunity for sign-and-trade agreements, and the QO can be rescinded at any time if the Kings need the cap flexibility for any reason.
RFA status also means that the Kings can match any offer sheet that Davis signs with another team. Once an offer sheet is signed a sign-and-trade is no longer an option, but it gives the Kings a way to keep Davis if he signs a low-cost deal.
It’s been previously reported that Davis is seeking a deal worth $9 million per year. The Kings are under no obligation to even make an offer, and are able to see what Davis commands on the open market.
Davis was acquired from the Toronto Raptors for a second round pick at the trade deadline. Davis was a productive player on the floor for the Kings, but has serious allegations of domestic violence off the court. While some charges have been dismissed, Davis is still subject to a protection order at this time, according to the most recent information that’s been reported.
Free agency begins on August 2nd and contracts can officially be signed as early as August 6th.
How much is the QO?
Also I think $9M for Davis is fine with a TO assuming Buddy is traded without a guard or small wing coming back. Don’t know how much higher I would go to match though.
I can only hope another team prices him out of here. Too bad he wasn’t around for the Cousins/Barnes/Lawson team.
SMF – What are you even talking about?? Terrence Davis is a baller and the domestic charges against him were dismissed. By contrast Matt Barnes choked a woman in a nightclub and dragged Cousions down with him and could not even play. Bad guy and bad player. With TD, all we know is the charges did not stick and the one time he spoke of it publicly he sounded very remorseful and contrite.
As stated above, the charges have not been fully dismissed. Some have, others are still outstanding subject to compliance with court orders.
Agree with you man. As a fan I’m not looking for perfect men but better players. It appears to me that TD is in the process of paying his dues and if he he falls short then fuck him. He can play in Europe or China.
LOL. Nobody’s asking for perfection, just don’t commit acts of domestic violence.
It depresses me how so many people make no distinction between what has been legally settled and what should be morally forgiven. “But the charges were dropped!” “But he’s ‘paid his debt’ to society!” Does that mean we should just pretend he never did anything and not judge his character by it? It reminds me of the people who say horrible things and then defend themselves by invoking “freedom of speech.” Yes, you have the right to say it. No, that doesn’t mean you’re not a bad person for saying it. Yes, your charges for domestic violence were dropped or reduced because you cut a deal and expressed remorse. No, that doesn’t mean we should be okay with giving you millions of dollars.
I don’t disagree with the main principle here¦I think domestic violence cases are always extremely tricky because rarely does the public get all the details on order of events, who did what, when, but obviously the details around this look terrible for Davis and I would guess it’s an action/choice he wishes he could have back. I don’t know if one time incidents or decisions should completely ruin a career, especially when a court of law thus far has not given a strict punishment, but I get the stance in this case of those that do and don’t want Davis on team as result.
I think it is interesting as a society that blurry or clear domestic violence cases get put in a certain category as an automatic strike out and driving under influence or similar serious public endangerment/assaults seems not too unless you do it habitually. Ty Lawson lots of us were against because of these repeated incidents. But nobody really holds similar stances about guys like PJ Tucker, Zach Randolph or Iman Shumpert. These guys are veteran leaders and role models for younger players. Just interesting what we as a society choose to publicly punish or those we choose to forgive and elevate, when serious endangerment is on the line in all these types of situations.
Each situation is unique so not saying all should be treated the same, just interesting what we accept and what we don’t.
Good points Wiz. First of all everyone gets to fan their own way. Second, the NBA, and sports in general have a fair amount of guys who have had various legal or moral issues of varying degrees. Ask. Would you have refused a Kobe trade because he was accused of Rape? No one is perfect. TD paid his debt and is not a habitual offender. I hope we resign him, but at a little less than $9. A 2 year $5-7 M with some options seems right. Just make sure we get his Bird rights. No Richaun sitch please.
Frankly, professional sports teams are overwhelmingly filled with law abiding citizens. The TDs are a very low percentage of the population makeup.
None of us are in a position to “refuse a trade”, but we certainly don’t have to be happy about it.
I think the most interesting part of this is you assume it was a “one-time” thing. That’s both statistically unlikely and diminishing of the DV problem in this country. And outward signs of remorse are also specious “proof”. Abusers often put on a good public face yet continue to do shitty things behind closed doors.
TD is likely to still get a job in the NBA somewhere, and if not there are other professional leagues and other work opportunities. He’s entitled to that, but no specific business entity is obligated to give him that opportunity.
The Kings have a poor recent track record on this subject. It would be nice if they would make the right call for once, but I’m not expecting it.
Your 100% right that statistically speaking it’s unlikely a one time thing. But we do not know that without additional details. I actually know both situations occurring to family members I am very close with.
The one time incident the guy got arrested. Charges eventually dropped family still together and by all accounts things are great and they moved on. Hopefully that’s true. My sister in law was abused for years, guy never arrested. Which guy looks worse in the court of public opinion?
So I am not trying to be dismissive but rather we don’t know the background of any of this so it’s hard to judge¦but we can all agree that both situations are shitty and it’s fair if someone doesn’t want either one on their favorite basketball team. It’s also fair if someone would rather look towards forgiveness to a one time offender based on what we know, even if statistically that may be unlikely.
I respect your opinion Wizs, but you’re doing some serious contorting here, and it feels like it’s more about the laundry than what may have actually happened.
Dude still has a protective order against him. And who knows the impact to the child that was there when this “one time” incident happened.
You can say we don’t know anything, but we do know some things. What we do know is plenty to take a pass, IMO.
Fair enough if that’s your stance. I don’t really take issue with that.
I think personal experiences play huge factors in individual takes on issues like this, or even as I referenced before , drunk driving, assaults (male vs male) etc.
So how would you feel about Deshaun Watson being traded to your favorite NFL team
Nothing. I don’t have a favorite football team, don’t watch and never cared for football, couldn’t even tell you which team he plays for now.
You can forgive a man for hitting a woman but you can’t forgive a man for raping multiple woman. Domestic violence is a serious offense but it was also a personal matter between him and his gf. Hopefully it was only an accident on his part and he learned his lesson not to do that again

4 out of the 5 mock drafts at the top of this page contend the player we will take is a player we have not even invited to work out for us. Pathetic! I contended before the mock drafts even got into full swing how futile and egregious the mock drafters were, a sad and inane bunch, and this only further validates my initial assertion.
Franz Wagner is the pick?!? Okay who is keeping score, lets go!!!
Alperen Sengun, the one outlier pick, is likely to go #8 if ORL takes Kuminga with their 5th pick, as I detailed in my previous post.
The “news” with regards to TD is not really news. It is a formality in the process towards resigning him to a multi-year deal!
This is a great time to be a Kings fans….McGenius about to go beast mode on the NBA, here we go!!!
Besides the up and down vote, could we get a confused vote symbol?
I would prefer a WTF symbol and I’d really like to see what that might look like. 🙂
We’ve been waiting decades for a sarchasm font…..don’t hold your breath
Had they declined to extend the offer, that also would have been news. It’s a formality, but hardly unimportant.
considering the context of this team and the history it has, this is a sad truth. For more successful teams, the extending of a QO to a bench role player is usually a byline in a bigger article. Le Kings: Le Sigh.
Man, I really hope for your sanity and our eyes that TD is signed to some long term deal and becomes an all-star, Bagley is moved for cap space, Buddy gets $.99 on the dollar in trade, and McNair picks a future hall of famer at #9. Anything less less than that or your McGenius schtick can take a long walk off a short pier.
That schtick can take that walk now, preferably.
Davis was terrific in those last few games and deserves a shot with us and we have control in case somebody else offers more than we can afford. I like this move.
I hope TD comes back at a very reasonable cost. I like the way he plays.
He’s not getting $9 mil, but I’m pretty sure everyone involved is aware of that. This is good, we’ll see what the market will bear, and if it’s reasonable, we’ve got a two-way bench player that can guard three positions.
I am okay with extending the QO for the purposes of giving the team leverage. I am not okay with actually re-signing him. Give millions of dollars to somebody who hasn’t been violent with a woman, please. We’ll see how genuine the Kings franchise’s public commitment to social justice really is.
I hope they bring him back
he’s solid off the bench
Yes! I hope we can bring him back. This team needs some tough young players. He’s strong on both sides of the floor.
He plays offense and defense.
Fifty percent of the current roster cannot read that sentence because the last word is foreign.
Pay the man a fair wage.
Being that he’s somewhere between the 4th and 5th guard in the rotation I think he’s being compensated adequately. If he could actually surpass any of the guards currently ahead of him he may be worth more but that’s a pretty long shot right now.
Fox
Tyrese
Hield
Wright
TD
Please explain why in the hell would we pay him anything above the QO?
His fair wage is likely very low because I don’t think he is going to get much attention from other teams. I think he earned more money than Bagley earned. But, Bagley actually earned about $1.25.
He is a smarter player than Hield is so in my opinion keeepmhim around in case Hield gets moved and you need another guard.
I’m not sure you should be paying half of what he’s asking for a guy who is currently the fourth shooting guard on the team.
Don’t get logical. It’s part of the plan that nobody has explained in the past 15 years.
I think in this situation the team needs to offer him something to retain the right to sign him if they need to in a few weeks. Maybe you can keep him $3M a year after you trade away two of the other guards? Could happen¦.
“Even if the Kings have zero interest in retaining Davis, it’s simply smart asset management to provide the QO”
Exactly.
We’ll see what happens to him. I’m not a big fan of his game: he’s a high-volume shooter with below-average playmaking ability. He looks good when his shots go in and plays reasonable defense (compared to the rest of our guards, so eh), but doesn’t provide much else. I’d be shocked if some team signs him for more than 7 million a year, especially combined with the off-court stuff.
