Kings waive Chimezie Metu, finalize roster for 2020-21 season

The Kings have made their final cut of the preseason.

The Sacramento Kings have waived Chimezie Metu, according to a report from Jason Jones of The Athletic. Metu, the No. 49 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Kings at the start of free agency.

It’s not a surprise that Metu didn’t get one of the Kings’ 15 full-time roster spots. Glenn Robinson III had a really good preseason and earned the final roster spot over Metu and Frank Kaminsky, the latter of whom was waived on Saturday. Robinson, Metu and Kaminsky all had non-guaranteed contracts. There was a slight chance that Metu could have made the roster over Justin James, since the Kings don’t really have salary cap concerns, but that wasn’t the case.

What is a bit of a surprise is that Metu wasn’t converted to a two-way contract. The Kings have an unused two-way slot and Metu, who only has two years of experience in the NBA, seemed like the prime candidate for it

Metu had a solid preseason for the Kings, averaging 6 points per game on 56.3% shooting from the field — in addition to 2.3 rebounds per game — while averaging 7.4 minutes per game. He also posted a plus-minus of +1.8 through four games. He didn’t look like he was on the verge of a breakout, but he probably deserved a longer look.

With Metu off of the roster, the Kings will have 16 players under contract going into the 2020-21 season, including Kyle Guy, who’s their only two-way player. The Kings will open their season against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. PT.
