The Sacramento Kings aren’t going to waste any time this offseason before discussing a contract extension with GM Vlade Divac, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times. The Kings emerged as a surprise team on the rise this year, and it sounds like Vlade will be rewarded for it.

The news comes as no surprise. Whatever troubles Vlade had early in his career, the team has taken a significant step forward in the past season and Vlade has earned more time in his role.
While no specifics are known yet (and dollar figures are unlikely to be shared publicly), I would guess Vlade gets somewhere in the neighborhood of another three or four years. Just my guess.
I’d also guess that shortly after Vlade’s deal gets done we’ll start to hear more about Dave Joerger’s future. Joerger is entering the final year of his contract, and is unlikely to want to play out the year as a lame duck. Vlade has publicly supported Joerger up to this point, but we’ll see if he backs that up with a contract extension. We’ll also have to see what, if anything, the Kings do regarding Brandon Williams’ status with the team.
In the meantime, it’s at least nice to see the Kings rewarding Vlade for a job well done. Consistency at the top is important for the growth of a team, and the Kings have a big offseason to prepare for.
