Kings sign veteran PG Jordan Farmar

Farmar joins the team for what will likely be a short stint until Darren Collison returns from suspension.

The Kings announced today that they have signed Point Guard Jordan Farmar. Due to Darren Collison’s suspension, the Kings have been granted another roster spot now that Collison has missed five games. Once Collison is reinstated however, the Kings will have to waive one player (likely Farmar) to get back to the maximum allowable roster size of 15.

In Collison’s absence, Ty Lawson has been the team’s only true Point Guard with Garrett Temple playing out of position as his backup. Farmar will bring a more reliable ballhandler and playmaker to Sacramento’s backcourt for the next few games, and his outside shooting (career .374 3P%) will be welcome as well. Farmar averaged 6.5 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds for Sacramento in four preseason contests.

Farmar already has familiarity with Dave Joerger’s system, having played for him last year in Memphis. Farmar had to take over as the starting PG of the Grizzlies after not having played in the NBA in almost a year.

Because there are no 10-day contracts available to teams right now, the Kings are likely signing Farmar to a fully or partially unguaranteed veteran’s minimum contract to play these next three games. That’s a bit of a premium to pay but the Kings obviously think he’ll be able to help them enough in the short term to be worth it.

Farmar will get his first chance to play tomorrow when the Kings visit the Orlando Magic and look to get their first win of this five game road trip.
