International basketball Woj (my words, not his) David Pick reported just minutes ago that the Sacramento Kings have signed veteran point guard Jordan Farmar.

Contract terms have not been disclosed at this time, but I’d be slightly surprised if it was anything beyond the sort of training camp invite, make-good deal the Kings signed Ty Lawson to a couple of weeks ago.

As Pick noted, Farmer finished last season as a member of the depleted Memphis Grizzlies under now-Sacramento Kings head coach Dave Joerger. Clearly, Joerger liked what Farmar brought to his squad last season.

Farmer appeared in 12 regular season games with the Grizzlies in 2015-16, 10 of which he started, averaging 9.2 points and 3.1 assists on .420 shooting from the field, and .356 from three, in 24.3 minutes per game.

He also started all four playoff games for the Grizzlies, averaging a less-impressive 6.8 points and 4.0 assists on .323 shooting from the field and .333 shooting from three in 28.3 minutes per game.

Despite Farmar’s subpar numbers and up-and-down career, this is a two time NBA Champion and long-time basketball veteran that, at the very least, will compete with Ty Lawson for a guaranteed roster spot.

In addition to competing with Lawson for a full-time gig, this could also be some indication that the Kings are expecting a long-term suspension for current-projected starting point guard, Darren Collison. If Collison is going to miss 20+ games, the Kings may need both Farmar and Lawson on the roster. Of course, if the Kings keep both of them, they will need to make a roster move elsewhere.

It’s unclear how much game Farmar has left, but at this point, it’s hard to look at this signing as anything other than a minor positive. The Kings need all the point guard help they can get right now, and this sort of assumed ‘open competition’ between Ty Lawson, Jordan Farmar, Isaiah Cousins, and anyone else they bring in, is exactly how the Kings should be handling their dire point guard situation.
