Louis King shined in the Summer League tournament, averaging 13.5 points and 5 rebounds while shooting 45.2% from beyond the arc. In the championship game vs. the Boston Celtics, King tallied 21 points and 5 steals, earning him the MVP award for the game.
In May, the Kings rewarded his production — both in Summer League and at the end of last season — by signing to a two-way deal. The end of the regular season gave us a glimpse into Louis King’s potential, as he dropped 27 points on the Memphis Grizzlies.
Best Case: King brings wing talent to a wing-less roster.
Building King into a consistent, plug-and-play wing will do wonders for Sacramento’s bench. Though it appears that the Kings plan to play smaller this year, He has the size to drastically improve matchups on any given night.
King has also been able to stroke the 3 fairly well, as shown in the Summer League tournament, where he shot 4-8 from behind the arc in the championship game. Having another clip to unload from 3-point territory — especially one his size — is promising as Buddy Hield’s future in Sacramento remains in limbo.
Worst Case: King sees more time in Stockton, stifles development
I’d like to look at this more as a positive than a negative, but my biggest concern with a an ascending young player is that the two-way deal puts him into the G League when Sacramento might actually need his talents. The season before the two-way season was put into place, Sacramento spent a lot of time farming their rookies in the G League — where are Georgios Papagiannis, Malachi Richardson and Skal Labissiere now? Not on an NBA roster.
I want Louis King to see regular minutes and continue his development at the NBA level, because there truly is potential for him to become a player in this league. The back and forth between Stockton and Sacramento might hinder the progress, and we lose any sense of consistency King brings to the team.
From the looks of Stockton’s social media, King is a big name when promotion of the roster alongside Neemias Queta, so it’s safe to assume they’ll be heavily featured this season, but hopefully both teams are able to find a perfect balance for King.
