MRI confirms fully ruptured Achilles for Rudy Gay

Rudy Gay underwent an MRI today to confirm the preliminary evaluation of a torn Achilles tendon, suffered during last night’s game against the Indiana Pacers. The original diagnosis was unfortunately confirmed by the MRI results as a full rupture of the left Achilles tendon. The Kings have stated that surgery for the injury will be scheduled in the coming days.

The most recent high profile Achilles injuries in the NBA have been to Wesley Matthews and Kobe Bryant. Matthews suffered his Achilles tear on March 5th, 2015 and was able to recover in time to start the next season in late October. Before the tear, Matthews was averaging 15.9 points on 44.8% from the field. In the two seasons since, he’s averaged 13.4 points but his shooting has dropped to just 38.8% from the field.

Bryant was 34 years old when he tore his Achilles on April 12th, 2013. His recovery took much longer than Matthews. Kobe did not return to action for the Lakers until Dec. 8th against the Toronto Raptors. He went on to play just the next five games before suffering a knee fracture that knocked him out the rest of the season. Like Matthews’, Bryant’s efficiency took a big dip in his career after the Achilles injury compared to before (46.3% shooting in the season before his Achilles tear, just 36.6% in the 3 seasons after).

Rudy Gay is facing a tough and long recovery, a situation he isn’t unfamiliar with after suffering a shoulder tear earlier in his career. We sincerely wish him the best.
