The Sacramento Kings announced the new uniform numbers for their rookies on Thursday. There was some question over whether a team could have both 00 and 0 on the roster. Willie Cauley-Stein wears 00, and De’Aaron Fox wore 0 at Kentucky. Instead, he’ll be wearing the number 5, matching his draft spot. Last season number 5 was worn by Malachi Richardson, but he had earlier announced via Twitter that he was planning on switching numbers this season. Richardson wore 23 in college, but Ben McLemore had held that number with the Kings.
Prior Kings to wear the number 5 include Tyus Edney, Hedo Turkoglu, Andres Nocioni, Pooh Jeter, John Salmons, Quincy Acy, Ryan Hollins, and James Anderson. Let’s hope Fox can be the last King to ever wear it, and save the number from its sordid history.
Frank Mason will be wearing number 15, which of course previously belonged to DeMarcus Cousins. I’m a little surprised to see it back on the court so quickly.
Justin Jackson will wear number 25, last worn in Sacramento by Eric Moreland. Jackson wore 44 in college to honor George “Iceman” Gervin, but the number was previously retired by the Sacramento Kings for Sam Lacey.
Harry Giles will wear number 20, switching from the number 1 he wore at Duke. Number 1 is retired in honor of Tiny Archibald. 20 was previously worn by Jordan Farmar, Quincy Miller, Donté Greene, Vitaly Potapenko, and Jon Barry.
