Sacramento Kings officially announce signing of Yogi Ferrell, second year reportedly non-guaranteed

New contract details emerge

The Sacramento Kings officially announced the signing of Yogi Ferrell on Monday. The official announcement is noteworthy as there had been speculation that the Kings might be delaying his signing to use their cap space for another deal and could then sign Ferrell using the Room Mid Level Exception. Doing so would have allowed the Kings over $14 million to work with. After signing Ferrell, the Kings still have roughly $10.5 million in cap room according to estimates.

With the signing came another interesting note on Ferrell’s contract. The deal had previously been reported as two years for a total of $6.2 million. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon added that the second year is non-guaranteed.

I was happy with Ferrell’s contract before learning this last detail, and I like it even more now. If Ferrell plays well and is a good fit, the Kings can keep him another year for cheap. If he doesn’t work for any number of reasons, the Kings haven’t committed anything towards next year’s cap. This also makes Ferrell an attractive addition to any trade packages the Kings could put together at the trade deadline.
