The Sacramento Kings have announced that Gary Gerould will be the interim play-by-play announcer for the team’s telecasts on NBC Sports California. Gerould will replace Grant Napear, who resigned as the Kings’ play-by-play announcer in June after he was placed on administrative leave for his insensitive comments about the Black Lives Matter movement.
Gerould, or “G Man,” has been a broadcaster for the Kings for 35 season, primarily as the team’s radio voice. However, he also spent some time on the sidelines as their play-by-play announcer for Kings TV. Gerould’s first game back will be his first television broadcast since 1998. However, he won’t get to take it in from the sidelines, as he and Doug Christie will call the games from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento when the Kings are in Orlando.
Here’s what Gerould had to say about the opportunity via a new release by the Kings on Thursday:
Gerould wil be temporarily replaced by Jason Ross, who typically does the pregame, halftime and postgame shows for Sports 1140 KHTK. Ross has been with the team for the last 25 years.
According to a statement released by the Kings, the team will have a permanent replacement for Napear at the start of the 2020-21 season. Hopefully that search is more thorough than the coaching search.
