De’Aaron Fox out for 7-10 days with ankle sprain

The Kings are hoping he will be ready to go for the first official game of the restart.

The bad luck for the Sacramento Kings continues.

Star point guard De’Aaron Fox sprained his left ankle at practice today and will be reevaluated in 7-10 days. This a huge blow for the Kings. Fox is unquestionably the squad’s best player, and according to reports from the bubble, has looked great during practice.

Sacramento wing Kent Bazemore spoke about Fox earlier Tuesday during a media availability and said, “Fox is moving as fast as ever.” Fox is averaging 20.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 31.7 minutes per game for the Kings during the 2019-20 season. He missed 17 games earlier this season with a grade-3 sprain of the same ankle.

Fox joins Harrison Barnes, Alex Len and Richaun Holmes as Kings players who are out for the time being. Barnes and Len are back in Sacramento after testing positive for the coronavirus, while Holmes is in quarantine after setting foot outside of the bubble to pick up a food order.

Given the timeline, Fox will most likely sit out Sacramento’s three scrimmage games but will hopefully be ready for the first official game of the restart, which is scheduled for July 31 against the San Antonio Spurs. If Fox is required to miss extended time, you can pretty much kiss the Kings’ playoff chances goodbye.

Head coach Luke Walton has stated one of main focal points of this second training camp has been keeping players healthy, but he knows every team in Orlando is facing unprecedented circumstances.

“Well, it’s kind of the message we’ve been hitting since even before coming out here. Every week, we’re going to go through a lot,” Walton said. “Players are going to be joining us, players are going to unfortunately be leaving us, and there’s just going to be so many unknowns that we have to be ready to react and adjust to everything, and this is just another example of that.”

The good news is that there is no structural damage to the ankle, so if all goes to plan, Fox will have a few days to get on-court work in prior to the Spurs game.
