The NBA’s plan to resume the season seems far enough away, but in order for games to begin on July 30, teams have to start getting their ducks in a row now.

As such, it comes as little surprise that the opt-in date for the Orlando plan is imminent. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that players will have until June 24 to let their teams know if they plan on participating in the restart of the league year.

NBA players have been notified that any player who chooses not to play in resumed 2019-20 season must notify his team by June 24, sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium. Compensation would be reduced by 1/92.6 for each game missed.

Players who are deemed to be at higher risk of illness from contracting COVID-19 will be excused from participating and not subject to the salary deduction. It is worth noting that the salary penalty for opting out of the Orlando games is worse than if a player were simply suspended, which seems unfair and something that should be negotiated further.

The league plans to start training camps on July 9, which would require teams to arrive in Orlando by at least July 7. If players decide not to opt in for the seeding games and the postseason, organizations are being given about two weeks to make alternate arrangements. Therefore, though this timing may feel rushed, it is probably necessary in order for replacement players to go through quarantine before heading to Florida.

However, if players have to make a choice within the next eight days, it stands to reason that the NBA has to release its full health and safety protocols to the players by then so that there are no outstanding questions about the Orlando set-up. Players need to have all of the information at their disposal in order to make a decision.

A newly-released detail of the bubble plan is what happens if an individual leaves the campus environment without prior permission, as detailed by Charania.

There have been varying reports about the constraints of the bubble, and some players have suggested it is too restrictive, but this reporting indicates that the league is prioritizing safety over comfort.

To date, no Kings have expressed public concerns with the NBA’s plan or any interest in sitting out the end of the season. We will know exactly where the team stands soon enough.
