The Sacramento Kings finally seem to have a solid plan that they’re executing, starting off with this summer’s moves to acquire even more youth as well as a few veteran stalwarts.
Before Sacramento’s signings, they had the most cap space in the NBA, and they used it to give big offers to guys like Zach Randolph (two years, $24 million), Vince Carter (one year, $8 million) and George Hill (three years, $57 million). Hill’s contract in particular is very interesting, because as we’d heard from Sam Amick yesterday, Hill’s contract is only about $40 million guaranteed. Basketball Insiders’ Eric Pincus has even more details:
I like the Sacramento Kings' structure w/George Hill $20m, $19m, $18m, last year only $1m guaranteed @BBallInsiders

Per Pincus, that guarantee date is July 1st, 2019, after the draft. Pincus also notes that Z-Bo’s contract also uses a declining structure.
Disregarding the fact that the Kings turned Hill into potentially the most valuable expiring contract of next season as a trade asset (A+ work there), even if they don’t trade him and simply waive him, the Kings are setting themselves up to once again have the most cap space in the NBA in a couple of seasons.
Of Sacramento’s youth, only Willie Cauley-Stein would be up for an extension at the time, and the Kings right now only have about $38 million of committed salary for eight players in 2019. Of course all that could change in a couple years but it seems as though the Kings want to groom their youth over the next couple years, see what they have, and then maybe make any big splashes they can.
This is solid work at maintaining flexibility going forward for the Kings. In two years, the Kings should have a much better idea of what’s working and what’s not, and hopefully by then they’re ready to make the leap.
