With former Sacramento Kings assistant GM Scott Perry leaving the organization for a promotion with the New York Knicks, one could assume that the Kings would look to fill the void left by Perry’s absence, and according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Vlade Divac is trying to do exactly that.

Otis Smith has filled various roles with the Detroit Pistons since he left the Magic in 2012. He’s currently with the Pistons under a hybrid assistant coach / director of player development role. It’s worth noting that the Kings already have a former Pistons executive in their front office, Ken Catanella, so, yeah. There is a relationship there.
His tenure as top decision maker in Orlando was not good, if I’m being blunt. You can peruse a full rundown of his transaction history here. Our friends at Orlando Pinstripped Post broke down Smith’s draft history back in 2012, and you can check that out here.
To say I’m lukewarm on a potential Otis Smith hire would be an understatement, but what Smith does bring to the table is years and years of NBA / front office experience. He knows the league, agents, and media as well as any NBA executives out there, and could theoretically be an asset for the front office in that regard, but he wouldn’t be my top choice.
If nothing else, I’d like to see Vlade Divac interview a few other candidates before making his decision. Stay tuned.
