NBA Free Agency 2017: Kings interested in Jonathon Simmons

Sacramento may meet with the restricted free agent.

According to the always-reliable Shams Charania, the Kings may be looking to fill their small forward gap with current Spur bench player, Jonathon Simmons.

Simmons is a fairly new addition to the NBA, but he isn’t exactly a spring chicken as he’ll turn 28 years old before the new season begins. In his two years with the Spurs he’s demonstrated himself to be an above-average defender, but he doesn’t add much on the offensive end of the floor. He wasn’t a great scorer, shooter, rebounder, or passer as his main role in San Antonio was as a bench ball-hawk and perimiter defender.

Earlier in the night, the Spurs offered their restricted free agent a deal in the range of $9 million per year.

The Kings can offer Simmons more money and a starting role, so if the inexperienced guard is looking for both a payday and playing time, Sacramento may have the edge.

Personally, I think Simmons is a bit of a risk as a signing as he’s only been in the league for two years, has played in the perfect system with an all-time great coach, and his lack of ability to knock down jump shots may not exactly pair well with De’Aaron Fox’s lack of a perimeter game.

If the price is right, Simmons is a hard worker who has great defensive chops, but Sacramento shouldn’t panic and overspend for a player who may not fill their needs as well as other available free agents. A contract in the range of 3 years for $33 million would probably be about my comfort limit.
