Sacramento Kings still looking for a Stretch Four and a third Point Guard

By | 0 Comments | Mar 5, 2019

While this has been one of the busiest offseasons in Sacramento Kings history in terms of Free Agency, Vlade Divac does not appear to be done making moves. In various interviews with local and national media in the past few days, Divac has been very candid about his pursuit of a stretch four and another Point Guard to help flesh out the roster.

The pursuit of a stretch four in particular seems to be the immediate goal, as the most recent rumors have had the Kings connected to Andrea Bargnani (who signed with the Nets), Matt Bonner (who re-signed with the Spurs), and Hedo Turkoglu.

While the Kings don't have any cap room left, they do apparently still have their Room Mid-Level Exception, worth about $2.8 million, according to former Nets Assistant GM Bobby Marks

That gives the Kings a little more buying power than a minimum deal to try to attract some of these players that they might want. Unfortunately, the Free Agent market is starting to dry up, particularly in these areas that Vlade Divac has mentioned.

For stretch fours, the remaining selection among big men is limited:

Guys like Dorell Wright, Hedo Turkoglu, James Jones and Rasual Butler aren't stretch fours but could possibly play the position in a pinch, given that they are better three point shooters than pretty much anyone on the above list. The Kings are also likely to play a lot of small ball under George Karl, so it's only prudent to consider them as options.

As for Point Guards, the cupboard is even more bare, with only Ish Smith, Luke Ridnour, Norris Cole, Jason Terry, Andre Miller and Matthew Dellavadova are available as "name" free agents. The other options left to consider for the Kings are potential Summer League standouts, which might not be a bad idea given that Collison and Rondo will be great mentors for a young PG prospect. European star and former Sacramento King Sergio Rodriguez is also rumored to be trying to make a comeback in the NBA, but it's unclear if he'd be willing to come back for a third string role and he'd also require a buyout from Real Madrid.

I'll be very interested to see how Vlade uses the room exception and what finishing touches he makes to this roster before October.
