Markelle Fultz possibly visiting with the Kings

Well then.
By | 0 Comments | Jun 9, 2017

(This story has been updated following reports that Fultz will not be coming to Sacramento this weekend after all. Updates at the bottom.)

Maybe the Kings are considering packaging the 5th and 10th picks after all. Late last night, Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee reported that the Kings have apparently scheduled a workout with the consensus no.1 prospect in the 2017 NBA Draft, Markelle Fultz.

This is a fascinating development, as it was only a couple of days ago when reports surfaced that Fultz would only be working out for the Boston Celtics.

The Kings, of course, hold the #5 and #10 picks in the 2017 NBA Draft, along with a pretty impressive collection of young players that could theoretically be packaged together in a trade with Boston for the #1 overall pick. It would be a very ‘Danny Ainge’ thing to do. Considering Fultz is already scheduling a workout in Sacramento, it wouldn’t be crazy to assume that there might actually be something going on here.

It’s also worth noting that as of May 31st, Markelle Fultz hasn’t hired an agent. I can’t find a more recent report than that one suggesting an agent has been hired, which is an interesting wrinkle in all of this. Normally, agents are responsible for accepting or declining team workouts, and if Fultz doesn’t have official representation yet, the Kings may have been able to convince him themselves, which leads me to my next point.

Much has been made over the course of the last several seasons about the Kings’ inability to get higher rated prospects in to Sacramento for a workout. They’ve done a remarkable job this summer reversing that narrative, as top prospects such as De’Aaron Fox, Harry Giles, Donovan Mitchell, and Justin Jackson have already come in. It’s possible that the Fultz workout is nothing more than a favor to the Kings if they (Scott Perry?) have some sort of relationship with whoever is conducting Fultz’s business behind-the-scenes. Fultz doesn’t owe the Kings any favors, but they did meet with him at the Chicago Combine, so there is an established relationship there. I wouldn’t say this is terribly likely, but not impossible. Teams, agents, and reporters all scratch each others backs from time to time, so don’t get too excited.

Regardless of the motive, having Fultz in Sacramento for a workout is very refreshing, and will only fuel trade speculation heading into the June 22nd draft.

UPDATE 9:45 AM:

This certainly confuses things. Either Fultz is still coming and it’s just not this Sunday, or he was never coming. But Jones and Voisin work for the same paper, and it’s weird there’d be such a mix-up. – Akis

UPDATE 10:45 AM:

James Ham has also confirmed that Fultz will not be visiting this weekend.

The sense I’m getting is that Ailene jumped the gun on her report and also that Fultz, even if he does come to Sacramento at some point, won’t be working out, just visiting. – Akis

UPDATE 11:30 AM:

Ailene offers some clarification on her end:
