NBA Draft: Kings select Harry Giles

Can the Kings strike gold twice?

With the 20th pick in the NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings selected Duke power forward, Harry Giles.

Similar to Skal Labissiere in 2016, Giles was projected to be a top-five selection in this year’s draft until falling to his second serious injury of his career. He averaged under four points and four rebounds per game and never made a serious impact in his collegiate career. Clearly, the big man was still shaking off rust throughout his freshman year and his production was nowhere near that of his potential.

Giles also fits a little bit oddly on a roster with three young big men already fighting for a roster spot, plus Joerger-favorite Kosta Koufos. He’s not a great passer or a stretch four as his main strengths are rebounding and possibly defense. Skal and Cauley-Stein certainly should have a leg up on him for the next few years as far as minutes go, but even finding a bench big man with the 20th pick would be solid.

This is certainly a swing-for-the-fences move by Scott Perry and Vlade Divac, but with their fairly “safe” picks earlier tonight, it may be the right move. OG Anunoby would have been my selection, but it’s possible that our Front Office believed him to be too redundant with Justin Jackson. Although he has major injury concerns, a late first round pick should always be selected for ceiling, and Giles may have the highest of those of any player left on the board.

If Giles can stay healthy, he could be another steal for Sacramento.
