With former Kings assistant general manager Scott Perry comfortably running the New York Knicks, and potential Perry-replacement Otis Smith taking his name out of the running, The Undefeated is reporting that basketball journeyman Brandon Williams has been hired as the Kings’ new assistant GM.

Shortly after the report, the Kings made the hire official. From the Kings press release:
If you’re unfamiliar with Brandon Williams, NBA.COM’s David Aldridge did what I’m comfortably calling a must-read profile on him in May. Seriously, go read that right now.
Most recently, Williams has been a part of the Philadelphia 76ers organization working under both Sam Hinkie and Jerry Colangelo. This is a very me thing, but I think it speaks to the character and ability of an NBA executive when they stick with a team through a regime change like that. Most organizations clean house and allow the new authority to bring in their guys, but Colangelo respected Williams’ work enough to keep him around.
Williams is precisely the kind of candidate I wanted the Kings to go after with Perry out of the fold. Thanks but no thanks to Otis Smith, Ronnie Lester, and other failed GM or front office retreads the Kings had expressed interest in earlier in this process. I’d much rather see them pursue a young up and coming, determined, hungry executive like Brandon Williams, and that is exactly what they did. This gets two thumbs up from me.
In Aldridge’s profile, David asked Williams to sell himself as a potential GM candidate. Williams responded: “The guy they’re getting is a guy that’s been competing against everybody for the past 12 years.”
Let’s go compete, Brandon. Welcome.
