We’ve been speculating that the Kings would have interest in Randolph this summer for quite a while now, so while this report certainly doesn’t come as a shock, at least we have confirmation that the Kings are looking in Randolph’s direction.
Zach Randolph spent 7 of his 8 years in Memphis with Kings head coach Dave Joerger, and Joerger often talks about how proud he is of Randolph’s development during his tenure. Not only did Randolph improve on the court, but Joerger was just as impressed with how he grew as a leader and teammate considering his reputation before joining the Grizzlies.
If last years’ signing of Matt Barnes is any indication, Vlade Divac and the Kings’ front office has a (brief) history of letting Joerger bring in some of ‘his guys’ and Randolph certainly fits that mold.
Randolph is precisely the kind of free agent the Kings should be targeting this summer, Dave Joerger relationship, or not. He’s an aging veteran leader that can show the young Kings how to play to Joeger’s liking. In other words, exactly what they need. It’ll be interesting to see how open Randolph is to joining a team in full rebuild mode when he’s still good enough on the court to draw interest from contenders, but I suppose we’ll find out shortly.
